There is no single best Kodi replacement because Kodi can mean several different things: a local player, a television-style interface, a personal library, or an add-on hub. Choose Jellyfin for a free, open-source, local-first media server; Plex for the easiest setup and broadest mainstream device support; Emby for a paid, configurable personal-media server; Stremio for an add-on-oriented experience; and Infuse for polished Apple playback. MediaPortal suits a Windows HTPC, while OSMC and LibreELEC keep Kodi itself in an appliance-like installation.
First decide what you are replacing
| If you want | Start with |
|---|---|
| A free, private personal-media server | Jellyfin |
| The easiest setup and broad device reach | Plex |
| A polished paid server | Emby |
| Kodi-like browsing through add-ons | Stremio |
| A high-quality Apple playback client | Infuse |
| A Windows living-room PC | MediaPortal |
| A lightweight Kodi appliance | OSMC or LibreELEC |
| Basic DLNA streaming | Universal Media Server |
Kodi is normally installed on the playback device and can browse local files, network shares and add-ons. Jellyfin, Plex and Emby generally put the library on a server—such as a computer or NAS—with client apps elsewhere. Infuse is primarily a player, Stremio an add-on framework, MediaPortal a Windows media center, and OSMC/LibreELEC operating systems built around Kodi. Installing a server on a NAS therefore does not automatically reproduce Kodi’s on-TV interface.
Best Kodi alternatives at a glance
| Platform | Role | Best for | Main strength | Main limitation | Cost signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin | Self-hosted server | Privacy-conscious owners | Open source, no premium feature tier | More hands-on setup and variable clients | Free software; hardware and infrastructure still cost money |
| Plex | Server and entertainment platform | Beginners, families, remote sharing | Polished apps and simple sharing | Accounts, paid features and product complexity | Free basic local use; paid remote and premium options |
| Emby | Personal-media server | Users wanting configurable paid features | Strong server controls | Important features require Premiere | $4.99/month, $54/year or $119 lifetime shown by Emby; region and future changes apply |
| Stremio | Streaming organizer/add-on client | Add-on-style discovery | Simple aggregation | Not a full personal-media server; source legality varies | Free app; source costs vary |
| Infuse | Apple playback client | Apple households | Excellent network and server playback | Apple-focused, not a server replacement | Free and paid tiers; check current regional price |
| MediaPortal | Windows media center | Dedicated Windows HTPCs | Traditional TV interface and PVR focus | Windows only | Free software; hardware extra |
| OSMC/LibreELEC | Kodi-based operating system | Appliance installations | Streamlined Kodi deployment | Still Kodi, not a different platform | Free software; hardware required |
| Universal Media Server | DLNA/UPnP server | Simple device streaming | Broad basic DLNA use | Fewer library, profile and sync features | Free/open-source project |
Jellyfin: best free and private-minded alternative
Jellyfin is the strongest choice for people who own their movies, shows, music, photos or home videos and want a genuinely self-hosted system. It is open source, has no subscription or premium feature paywall, and reduces dependence on a vendor account. “Free” means the software: a capable computer or NAS, storage, backups, electricity and secure remote access can still cost money.
Jellyfin’s server/client model works well for a central library, multiple users and synchronized watch state. Client quality and availability differ by television and streaming device, so check the exact official or community app before committing. Direct play is preferable: the client handles the original container, video, audio, subtitles and HDR. Otherwise the server may remux or transcode, requiring substantially more CPU/GPU power.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Choose Jellyfin if privacy, control and avoiding recurring license fees matter more than turnkey sharing. It is a poorer fit when nontechnical relatives need instant remote access or every television must have an equally mature first-party app. Documentation is at jellyfin.org/docs.
Plex: easiest all-round alternative
Plex Media Server is usually the convenience choice: polished clients, broad mainstream device coverage and straightforward family sharing. Basic server use and local personal-media playback are free, but particular remote, mobile, download, hardware-transcoding and DVR functions can require Remote Watch Pass, Plex Pass or app activation.
Plex also operates separate ad-supported movies, shows and Live TV products. A Plex Pass does not remove those ads, as Plex explains at its feature overview. New Lifetime Plex Pass pricing rose to $749.99 USD on July 1, 2026; monthly and annual prices can vary by region and change later. See the dated announcement at Plex’s pricing notice.
For over-the-air recording, Plex requires Plex Pass, Plex Media Server, a compatible tuner and antenna; requirements are outlined at plex.tv/tv. Plex is a good fit for beginners and mixed-device households, but less attractive if your reason for leaving Kodi is to avoid accounts, vendor dependence or paid remote features.

Emby: a paid personal-media middle ground
Emby concentrates on personal media rather than supplying commercial movies or shows. Its free tier covers library browsing, metadata, users, parental controls and Emby Connect. Emby’s feature matrix places Live TV, DVR, downloads/sync, hardware-accelerated transcoding and HDR tone mapping during transcoding among Premiere features.
Emby lists standard Premiere at $4.99 per month, $54 per year or $119 lifetime, subject to region and future change. Device and household limits depend on the license; larger deployments have extended options described at the membership page and Premiere Extended. Emby suits readers willing to pay for a complete, configurable server, but not those requiring every major feature to be free and open source.
Stremio: closest to Kodi’s add-on model
Stremio organizes available content through add-ons, making it conceptually closer to Kodi for readers whose priority is one discovery interface rather than a managed local library. It is not equivalent to Jellyfin, Plex or Emby as a personal-media server.
The application and add-on framework do not make every source lawful. Subscription services retain their own accounts, DRM, playback limits and terms, while individual third-party sources must be evaluated for authorization. Do not treat “one interface” as one universal subscription or as permission to use unauthorized streams.

Infuse: best Apple playback client
Infuse is a playback-focused app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. It can connect to network shares and compatible Plex, Jellyfin or Emby servers, making it a strong choice when storage already exists and the household wants a polished Apple interface.
Infuse is not a cross-platform server replacement and is not the answer for Windows, Linux, Roku or many smart-TV environments. It has free and paid tiers; verify current regional pricing in Apple’s store or Firecore’s purchase flow rather than relying on an old figure.
Specialized choices
MediaPortal for a Windows HTPC
MediaPortal provides a traditional ten-foot Windows interface with a strong tuner and PVR orientation. Its Windows-only scope makes it a niche choice for a dedicated living-room PC, not a broad multi-device server.
OSMC and LibreELEC when you do not really want to leave Kodi
OSMC and LibreELEC are lightweight operating systems for supported hardware that deploy Kodi as an appliance. They can reduce operating-system maintenance, but they retain Kodi’s interface, add-on model and behavior; they do not solve complaints about Kodi itself.

Universal Media Server for basic DLNA
Universal Media Server is a free, open-source DLNA/UPnP server for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is suitable when a television or console only needs file exposure. Compared with full platforms, it generally offers less metadata management, user control, watch history, synchronization and remote streaming. DLNA compatibility and transcoding still need testing on the target device.
The technical choice: direct play or transcoding
Direct play sends the original file to a compatible client. Remuxing changes the container while leaving streams intact. Transcoding converts audio or video and consumes far more server resources. Codec, container, bitrate, subtitle format, HDR conversion and Dolby or other surround formats can trigger conversion. A “4K support” label therefore does not guarantee direct playback of every 4K HDR file.
Test the exact client, codec, container, audio, subtitle and HDR combination. During playback, inspect the server dashboard to see whether the file is direct-playing or transcoding before buying faster hardware.
Setup and migration checklist
Jellyfin
- Install Jellyfin Server on a supported computer, NAS, container host or operating system.
- Create the administrator account, add libraries and select organized media folders.
- Install the client for each target television, phone or browser.
- Test 1080p H.264, 4K HEVC, HDR, surround audio and embedded/external subtitles.
- Confirm direct play or transcoding in the dashboard.
- Only after local playback works, configure remote access through HTTPS, a secure reverse proxy or a mesh VPN.
- Back up server configuration separately from the media.
Plex
- Install Plex Media Server on the computer or NAS holding the files; the installation guide is at Plex Support.
- Sign in, create libraries and install clients on target devices.
- Confirm local playback before enabling remote access.
- Check which users and devices require Plex Pass, Remote Watch Pass or activation.
- For DVR, add a compatible tuner and antenna and verify local guide availability.
- Test server transcoding and home upload bandwidth before promising reliable remote 4K.
Emby
- Install Emby Server from Emby’s downloads page.
- Create libraries and users, then install clients.
- Check whether mobile playback, downloads, DVR or hardware transcoding require Premiere.
- Test direct play and transcoding, configure remote access and verify license device limits.
Migration safeguards
- Keep original files untouched and export or rebuild metadata deliberately.
- Expect to recreate watched status, subtitle preferences and audio-language settings.
- Replace Kodi add-ons with official services or supported server integrations.
- Test one library and one television while continuing to run Kodi.
Common problems
Buffering despite a “supported” file
Check Wi-Fi, remote upload bandwidth, server transcoding, NAS or USB speed, subtitles, HDR-to-SDR conversion and whether the client supports the container. A server that cannot transcode in real time will not provide smooth playback when direct play fails.

Missing shows or incorrect metadata
Review naming, folder structure, multiple editions, library type, metadata-provider changes and server permissions. Naming conventions differ by platform, so follow the selected project’s current documentation rather than assuming Kodi’s database will transfer.
Remote access works only at home
Carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, blocked ports, firewall rules, DNS, reverse-proxy errors and limited upload bandwidth are common causes. A VPN or mesh VPN can be safer than exposing a server port, although device support and setup effort vary.
No app on the television
Distinguish an official client from browser playback, sideloading, a community app, DLNA fallback or a separate streaming box. Confirm support for the exact TV platform instead of relying on “works everywhere” claims.
Personal media is not a content catalog
Jellyfin, Plex and Emby organize media that you own or are legally entitled to access; they do not automatically provide commercial movies and television. Plex’s free streaming catalog is a separate ad-supported product, and Emby explicitly describes itself as a personal media server. Kodi’s official policy likewise does not support bootleg or illegally sourced content. Free software, legal ad-supported services, public-domain works and unauthorized streams are different categories.
When Kodi is still the better choice
Stay with Kodi when your priority is local or network playback on one device, a television-first interface, extensive skins and views, unusual formats, gamepad or HTPC integration, photo and music browsing, or direct control over add-ons and library presentation. Kodi remains actively developed: the project announced Kodi 22 “Piers” Beta 1 on June 28, 2026, while warning that prerelease software may contain bugs. See kodi.tv and the project overview.
