Keep pranks low-stakes and treat consent as part of production
These are examples to watch, not a blueprint for making strangers believe they are in danger. YouTube’s harmful or dangerous content policy identifies fake home invasions, robberies, kidnappings, weapon threats, bomb scares, swatting, and fake emergency calls as examples of dangerous or threatening prank content. It also addresses distressing scenarios involving minors or vulnerable people. Platform policy can change; consult the current policy before publishing prank content.
Filming someone before they know a camera is present and getting permission to publish their identifiable image are separate matters. Candid Camera’s official FAQ says: “Absolutely. Everyone photographed for Candid Camera is asked to sign a release.” The FAQ says footage is destroyed if a person does not wish to sign. That describes the show’s stated practice; it is not a universal legal rule, nor does a release automatically settle every privacy question.

A Canadian privacy commissioner’s case-specific investigation illustrates why consent to capture, permission to use footage, and protection of a person’s identity should be considered separately. The investigation describes a voluntary appearance release and an agreement to conceal the identity of identifiable people who did not provide written consent.
Rules also depend on location and setting. In the UK, Ofcom’s broadcast privacy guidance discusses surreptitious recording on private property without full and informed consent. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office explains that home CCTV recording beyond a property boundary can bring additional obligations and that privacy interests must be considered in its home CCTV guidance.
