For a long video you plan to loop on YouTube, start with a HandBrake Creator or web preset suited to your intended output, then use Constant Quality unless you need to hit a particular file size or average bitrate. There is no universal RF value: encode a short, representative section and inspect it before processing the full video.
Keep file compression separate from live-stream settings. HandBrake creates the saved video; the encoder sending a live stream to YouTube needs its own bitrate, keyframe, and other ingest settings.
Start with a preset, then check what it changes
Open the source in HandBrake and select a Creator or web preset aimed at hosting services such as YouTube. The general Fast 1080p30 preset is a broadly compatible starting point, not a rule to convert every source to 1080p30. Preserve the source’s actual resolution and frame rate unless you have a reason to change them. Check the preset’s output settings before encoding. HandBrake’s official preset documentation describes the Creator presets and their intended use.
Choose the rate-control mode for your goal
Constant Quality for visual quality
Choose Constant Quality when your priority is a consistent visual-quality level and you can accept that different footage will produce different file sizes. HandBrake recommends this approach unless you need to target a specific file size. The RF value is not a guaranteed size or a universal quality setting: the right result depends on the source, encoder, and your own tolerance for visible artifacts. HandBrake’s Constant Quality versus Average Bitrate guidance explains the distinction.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Average Bitrate when a target matters
Choose Average Bitrate when you have a size or average-rate target to meet. HandBrake recommends multipass encoding for this mode; multipass can take up to twice as long as a single-pass encode. A target bitrate is still an average, so the actual output size can vary with duration and audio settings.
Set the encoder and frame rate conservatively
Encoder preset
Begin with the encoder’s default or a neutral speed preset. The speed setting shifts the trade-off among encoding time, quality, and file size; slower encoding may be practical when the job runs offline and time is available, but there is no single best speed for every source and computer. Change it only after a test shows a meaningful benefit for your workflow. HandBrake’s encoder preset documentation describes the speed/quality/filesize trade-off.
Frame rate
Prefer Same as Source when preserving the original frame rate is appropriate. If the source is variable frame rate and you need constant-frame-rate output, choose that deliberately rather than changing rates by habit. HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation distinguishes Same as Source/VFR and Constant Frame Rate; the page is marked draft, so confirm the labels in the version you have installed. Read HandBrake’s frame-rate guidance.

Test a short section before encoding hours of video
- Choose a representative segment. Include detailed imagery, fast movement, and any difficult scenes such as grain, low light, or busy textures.
- Encode with your chosen preset and rate-control mode. Keep the source and output settings noted so you can compare changes fairly.
- Inspect the result at normal viewing size. Look for softened detail, blocking, banding, or motion artifacts, and compare the segment’s file size with your storage needs.
- Adjust one setting at a time. If quality is inadequate, adjust quality or retain more resolution; if the result is too large, test a modest quality adjustment or a lower resolution and decide whether the detail loss is acceptable.
- Only then encode the full runtime. A short test informs your decision; it cannot guarantee an exact final size for footage with different visual complexity.
Lowering resolution usually reduces file size and processing needs, but it also removes detail. The amount of compression and encode time depends on the footage and settings; HandBrake’s examples should not be treated as current speed predictions for a different computer. HandBrake explains the relationship among output size, quality, and resolution.

HandBrake’s Constant Quality and Average Bitrate settings control a saved file encode. They do not set the bitrate for the encoder that sends a live stream to YouTube. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Choose the live bitrate according to the ingest codec, stream resolution, and frame rate—not the HandBrake RF value or the file’s average bitrate.
| H.264 live ingest format | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps recommended; minimum not stated here | not stated here |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, checked 2026-10-03, not HandBrake output targets. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with up to 60 fps; codec-specific bitrate guidance differs. It also recommends progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, AAC or MP3 audio, and for stereo audio 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Check YouTube’s current table for the codec and format you intend to send, then monitor the actual stream’s health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.

Check rights and YouTube eligibility before looping
Compressing a video does not grant permission to stream it. Before scheduling a long loop, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, narration, and other included material. YouTube’s copyright rules and monetization policies are separate from HandBrake settings; a technically valid encode does not establish that a stream complies with them. Review the relevant policies for your channel and the content you plan to use.

The file is still too large
Test a quality adjustment or lower output resolution and inspect the visual impact. Do not assume a particular RF value will produce a predetermined size; content complexity affects the result. If you need a size target, use Average Bitrate and consider multipass, allowing extra encode time.
The picture looks soft or shows artifacts
Compare the test segment with the source at normal viewing size. Revisit the Constant Quality setting, avoid unnecessary resolution reduction, and test detailed and moving scenes rather than judging a static frame alone.

The encode takes longer than expected
Encoder speed settings trade time against compression behavior. Start from the default, and consider a faster preset if turnaround matters more than file size; test the output before applying it to the full runtime. A slower preset can be considered when you can leave the offline encode running longer.
The live stream buffers or reports poor health
Check the live encoder’s bitrate against YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and confirm the connection can reliably upload at that rate. Use CBR and the recommended 2-second keyframe interval, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health status. Changing HandBrake’s file quality setting does not correct a live-ingest bitrate mismatch.
The picture’s motion looks wrong after conversion
Check whether the frame rate was changed from the source and whether variable-rate footage was converted intentionally. Restore Same as Source where appropriate, or select Constant Frame Rate only when your workflow requires it; verify the setting names in your installed HandBrake version.
