PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a large CPU-encoded playlist, start with FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder and -preset faster, then time a representative clip on your own machine. It is a throughput-oriented starting point, not a universally optimal setting: compare it with fast or veryfast when deadline matters most, and with medium or slow when you can spend more time encoding.
What the preset changes—and what it does not
An x264 preset selects encoder settings that trade encoding speed against compression efficiency. Faster presets generally finish sooner; slower presets may produce smaller files at a comparable visual quality, but take longer. The result depends on the footage, CPU, FFmpeg/x264 build, resolution, rate-control settings, and other workload on the machine.
The preset does not set a guaranteed quality level or tell YouTube how to process the upload. In a constant-quality workflow, -crf sets the quality/file-size tradeoff while -preset controls the encoder’s speed-efficiency tradeoff. FFmpeg’s libx264 documentation describes the preset option as “Set the encoding preset (cf. x264 –fullhelp).” The x264 preset sequence runs from ultrafast through placebo, with medium as the default. FFmpeg libx264 documentation.
Choose a preset for your queue and deadline
| Priority | Presets to compare | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Finish a time-sensitive queue | faster, then veryfast |
Time a representative clip. Use the quicker option only if its output still meets your visual-quality and file-size needs. |
| Balance throughput and compression | faster, fast, or medium |
Start at faster; if the schedule allows, compare slower choices at the same quality target. |
| Prioritize smaller files at similar quality | medium or slow |
Compare file size and difficult scenes at a fixed CRF, and account for the extra encode time across the whole queue. |
These are options to evaluate, not guaranteed outcomes. Avoid placebo as a routine queue setting: x264’s reference characterizes it as extreme processing at a speed cost, rather than a practical throughput choice. There is no reliable way to predict total playlist encode time without the machine and workload; no hardware benchmark is available here.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Benchmark before encoding the full playlist
- Pick a representative clip. Include the kinds of material that make up the queue, especially motion, fine detail, or visible noise/grain. A simple scene may not predict harder footage well.
- Keep the comparison controlled. Encode the same source with the same FFmpeg build, codec, CRF, frame rate, and other settings; change only the preset.
- Compare elapsed time and output size. Record each run’s completion time and resulting file size. Do not infer full-batch duration from a clip with a different content mix.
- Inspect the result. Compare representative hard scenes at normal viewing size for visible quality differences. Choose the fastest setting that satisfies your requirements.
- Estimate the queue cautiously. Use the representative clip’s measured time and account for differences in clip duration and content. A different CPU, concurrent workload, source complexity, or encoder build can change throughput.
A practical FFmpeg starting command
For a progressive SDR source, this is an illustrative constant-quality H.264 pattern:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset faster -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4
20 is an example CRF value, not a YouTube requirement or a universally suitable setting. Adjust CRF to the quality/file-size balance you want. If delivery requires a specific bitrate or maximum file size, use a bitrate-based workflow instead of treating CRF as a size guarantee. FFmpeg documents preset and CRF as separate encoder options. Preserve the source frame rate unless you have a separate reason to change it, and inspect the finished file before uploading. YouTube Help says content should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which it was recorded. The command is not a universal recipe for interlaced, HDR, or otherwise unusual sources.
YouTube upload characteristics and bitrate guidance
YouTube Help recommends MP4, H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP with a GOP length of half the frame rate, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. These are upload recommendations, not a requirement that every uploader re-encode to precisely those settings. YouTube also says there is no required bitrate limit. The same YouTube Help page provides the following recommended bitrates for SDR uploads, accessed in 2026. They are references for the stated resolution and frame-rate categories, not HDR guidance or guaranteed quality outcomes:
| SDR video category | YouTube Help recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p, standard frame rate (24, 25, or 30 fps) | 8 Mbps (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) |
| 1080p, high frame rate (48, 50, or 60 fps) | 12 Mbps (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) |
| 2160p/4K, standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) |
| 2160p/4K, high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps (YouTube Help, accessed 2026) |
Use the category matching your resolution and frame rate, and do not apply this SDR table to HDR footage. These are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates; they do not choose an x264 preset or impose a bitrate ceiling.

Common encoding problems
- The batch misses its deadline: Time a representative clip and compare a faster preset such as
veryfastwith your current choice. Check whether other CPU-heavy work is running; total performance depends on the machine and concurrent workload. - The output is larger than expected: At the same CRF, compare a slower preset and inspect the resulting size and quality. If you must meet a target size or bitrate, use bitrate-based rate control rather than expecting CRF to enforce a limit.
- Motion, grain, or fine detail looks worse: Inspect those scenes across controlled preset comparisons at the same CRF. A single easy scene is not enough to judge a varied playlist.
- The upload does not match the intended profile: Check the output’s actual resolution, frame rate, scan type, pixel format, and encoding settings. Preserve the recorded frame rate and distinguish SDR from HDR when applying YouTube’s recommendations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than to prepare new encodes, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is not a substitute for encoding files you need to upload, and it streams to YouTube only.
