OBS Studio is the best starting point for most players who want control over full-session recordings, multiple sources, audio, and scenes. If you mainly want quick gameplay capture with little setup, AMD Adrenalin is a natural option for supported Radeon systems, while Steam Game Recording suits games you play through the Steam Client. There is no verified, controlled performance or image-quality winner among them; choose by workflow, hardware, and how much setup you want.
Choose by the kind of recording you need
First decide whether you want short clips, background capture you can review later, a full session saved locally, or a composed production with a webcam and several audio or video sources. These are different jobs: a capture feature built into a GPU or game platform may be convenient for gameplay, while a production tool gives you more control over what appears in the recording.
- Full sessions, multiple sources, or detailed audio control: start with OBS Studio.
- In-game moments on a supported Radeon setup: consider AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition’s capture feature.
- Background capture of Steam Client games: consider Steam Game Recording.
- Console gameplay into a computer: use a capture device or a supported console-to-PC streaming route; see the console section below.
These are documented use cases, not measured rankings of frame-rate impact, recording quality, or file size. The evidence available here does not establish a current, controlled test winner.
How the main options differ
| Software | Best fit | Workflow and control | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Players who want local recordings, multiple inputs, audio mixing, scenes, or the option to stream. | Build scenes from sources such as games, desktop, webcam, video files, or capture cards. Use audio controls, filters, hotkeys, and scene transitions. | Flexible but involves more setup. Recording capability depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, as well as the computer and its configuration. |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Radeon owners looking for in-game capture integrated with AMD software. | AMD describes its Media and Capture section as a way to capture in-game moments. | Exact current clip limits, encoder choices, supported models, and relative performance are not established here. Confirm that the installed hardware and software support the feature. |
| Steam Game Recording | Players who want background recording and timeline review for games played through the Steam Client. | Steam describes Game Recording as capturing gameplay in the background. | Its scope is Steam Client gameplay. Valve says supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards remove most of the performance cost of creating recordings; systems without those cards use the CPU, which may cause a noticeable impact. This is Valve’s guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
Why OBS Studio is the flexible default
OBS Studio is free and open source. Its scene-based approach lets you combine sources—for example, game capture, a webcam, and a microphone—and control the audio mix. Hotkeys can help manage recording or scene changes during play. OBS can also send a production to streaming destinations, but recording locally does not require you to livestream.

That flexibility comes with decisions to make. Choose the sources you actually need, check that the game and OBS use the appropriate GPU, and adjust recording settings to what your hardware can sustain. OBS’s System Requirements page warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page was published on 2021-08-25, so check current OBS documentation for version-specific compatibility details.
Check GPU selection on a laptop
Some laptops use an integrated GPU for desktop tasks and a discrete GPU for games. OBS explains that if the game runs on the discrete GPU while OBS runs on the integrated GPU, Game Capture may fail; performance can also suffer, and rare crashes are possible.

Steam Game Recording for Steam gameplay
Steam Game Recording is designed for games played through the Steam Client and provides a background-recording workflow with timeline review. Valve’s support guidance distinguishes systems with supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards from systems that use the CPU for recording; the latter may see a noticeable performance impact. Treat this as Valve’s product guidance rather than a guarantee for an individual PC.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use a capture device. Add it in OBS as a Video Capture Source. Confirm that the device works with your host operating system and console output, and check its supported resolution, frame rate, passthrough, and connection requirements before buying.
- Use console-to-PC streaming software. OBS describes Window Capture of PS Remote Play or the Xbox app as alternatives. This route depends on a sufficiently fast connection between the console and PC for optimal quality.
OBS names Elgato, AVerMedia, Razer Ripsaw, EVGA XR1, and Hauppauge HD PVR Pro as examples of capture devices; that is not an endorsement of a particular current model. For macOS or Linux, OBS recommends a game capture device that supports USB Video Class (UVC). Nintendo Switch systems are compatible when docked; Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible through that docked-console route.
If you need hardware, search for a USB game capture card for recording console gameplay, and verify the exact console, host OS, video modes, passthrough, and connections. For Mac or Linux, look specifically for a UVC capture card for Mac or Linux. A capture card is a conditional console or external-source solution—not a requirement for ordinary single-PC game capture. OBS lists capture cards as a source, but that does not mean PC-only players need one.

Check compatibility and recording performance
Compatibility lists are only a starting point. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; a more demanding setting or scene may exceed what a particular system can record well. GPU selection also matters on multi-GPU laptops. The cited OBS System Requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, and the GPU Selection Guide is dated 2023-04-24, so consult current official documentation for your OS, OBS version, and hardware.
- Check that the operating system and capture method are supported by the software you choose.
- Confirm the game and recording application are using the intended GPU on a multi-GPU laptop.
- If recording quality or smoothness is poor, reduce the workload—such as resolution, FPS, or scene complexity—or try a different encoder where your software and hardware support one.
- Leave adequate disk space for the session and verify where recordings are saved before a long capture.
No comparable benchmark in the available official documentation establishes which option has the lowest performance cost or best image quality on a given PC.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Game Capture does not show the game on a laptop | OBS and the game may be running on different GPUs. | Check GPU assignments for both applications. OBS’s Windows 10 (1809+) and Windows 11 guidance points to Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings; confirm current Windows labels. |
| Recording is not smooth or affects gameplay | The encoder, resolution, FPS, scene complexity, or GPU arrangement may exceed what the system can handle. | Lower the recording workload, simplify the scene, and confirm GPU selection. On Steam systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards, Valve says recording uses the CPU and may cause a noticeable impact. |
| Console footage does not appear in OBS | The capture source may not be configured, the device may be incompatible, or a network-streaming route may be unstable. | For a capture device, add or check the Video Capture Source and verify console output, host OS, connections, and supported video modes. For PS Remote Play or Xbox app capture, check the console-to-PC connection. |
| A capture device does not work on Mac or Linux | The device may not support UVC or the host operating system. | Check the exact device’s operating-system compatibility and UVC support before relying on it. |
| Switch Lite footage is unavailable through a docked-console setup | Switch Lite cannot be docked. | OBS’s console guidance covers compatible Nintendo Switch systems when docked, not Switch Lite through that route. |
