Its U.S. App Store listing says the free tier supports downloads of supported songs, albums, mixtapes, and playlists. Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music also offer offline listening, but their catalog downloads require paid plans.
There is one crucial distinction: these apps generally let you store music for playback inside the app; they do not normally give you unrestricted MP3 files to move, share, or play anywhere.
Short answer: Audiomack is the clearest choice if you want to listen to supported music offline on an iPhone without paying for a subscription. Its U.S. App Store listing says the free tier lets users stream and download songs, albums, mixtapes, and playlists for offline playback.
If you want a larger mainstream catalog, the strongest alternatives are Spotify Premium, Apple Music, and YouTube Music Premium. All three support offline listening, but their catalog downloads require paid plans. They do not give you unrestricted MP3 files to copy into Files, share, or play in any music app.

First, decide what “download music” means
On an iPhone, “download music” can describe two very different things:
- Offline listening inside an app: The service stores protected music on your iPhone so you can play it without an internet connection. This is what Audiomack, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and SoundCloud’s Go service support in the circumstances described below.
- Owning transferable audio files: You receive an MP3 or another ordinary audio file that can be moved to Files, another player, a computer, or a different phone.
The recommendations in this article primarily concern the first option. A service’s offline button generally does not mean that you own an unrestricted MP3. Subscription downloads can also stop working if the subscription ends, the track leaves the service, or the app requires you to reconnect.

1. Audiomack: the best genuinely free option
Audiomack is the best place to start if you want a free iPhone app that can save supported music for offline listening. The U.S. App Store listing describes free streaming and downloads for songs, albums, mixtapes, and playlists without requiring a subscription.
That makes Audiomack different from the free tiers of the biggest general-purpose streaming services. Spotify’s free plan, for example, is not the same thing as free offline downloads of its catalog.
Why Audiomack stands out
- No paid plan is required for the advertised offline feature.
- Mixtapes and albums are prominent parts of the experience.
- It is useful for hip-hop, independent artists, emerging releases, and creator-uploaded material.
- Playlists and individual songs can be saved for listening when you have no connection.
There is an important limitation: Audiomack’s catalog and rights are not identical to those of Apple Music or Spotify. Do not assume that every major artist, album, or recording is available. The free tier may also include advertising, and Audiomack offers optional paid features.
How to use Audiomack offline
- Install Audiomack from the App Store and open the app.
- Search for a song, album, mixtape, or playlist.
- Use the app’s download control for the supported item.
- Allow the download to finish while connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Open Audiomack’s library or downloads area and start playback after going offline.
The exact button name and location can change as the app is updated. If a download control is missing for a particular release, that usually reflects catalog, licensing, account, or app availability rather than an iPhone 16-versus-iPhone 17 difference.

2. Spotify Premium: the best mainstream paid upgrade
Choose Spotify Premium if you want dependable offline playlists and a broad mainstream catalog. Spotify’s official support documentation says Premium users can download songs, albums, and playlists for offline listening. Spotify also lists offline downloads as a Premium benefit.
Spotify has a free tier, but the cited offline-download support applies to Premium. It would therefore be misleading to list Spotify as a free music-download app simply because the app itself can be installed and used without paying.
Spotify is a strong choice if you already use its recommendations, collaborative playlists, desktop app, or multi-device library. Before a flight or long trip, download the albums and playlists you need while online, then test playback with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled.
Best for: listeners willing to pay for a polished, broad-catalog service with downloadable playlists.
3. Apple Music: the most seamless paid iPhone option
Apple Music is the most seamless paid option for iPhone owners who want catalog downloads inside Apple’s Music app. Apple’s support guidance allows subscribers to add music from the Apple Music catalog to their library and download it for offline listening.
Its main advantage is integration with the iPhone: music, library organization, downloads, and playback are handled in Apple’s native Music environment. It is a natural fit if you already use Apple devices and services and do not want a separate music ecosystem.

Do not confuse Apple Music downloads with music purchased from the iTunes Store. A downloaded Apple Music catalog track is service-based offline access tied to the subscription and the app. Apple separately documents purchasing music, which is a different route from subscribing to Apple Music.
Best for: iPhone owners who prioritize Apple integration and a large catalog over a free offline tier.
4. YouTube Music Premium: best for YouTube discovery
YouTube Music is a good paid choice if your music discovery starts on YouTube. The app is free to download and use, but Google identifies ad-free music, background play, and offline music downloads as Premium features.
This service is particularly attractive for listeners who seek remixes, live performances, alternate versions, music videos, and material that is closely connected to the wider YouTube ecosystem. The trade-off is straightforward: free use does not make catalog music downloads free.
YouTube Music downloads also need maintenance. Google’s guidance says you must reconnect the app to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloaded content available for offline use. Connect before a trip rather than assuming a download made weeks ago will remain available indefinitely.
Best for: YouTube-heavy listeners who want background playback and offline music after subscribing to Premium.

5. SoundCloud Go: a secondary creator-focused alternative
SoundCloud is worth considering for independent artists, creator uploads, mixes, and discovery. SoundCloud’s official help center maintains an offline-listening path associated with SoundCloud Go.
It should not be treated as the leading free recommendation. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current U.S. iPhone comparison of SoundCloud’s plans or prove broad free offline access. Check the current offer and the download rules shown in your region before subscribing.
Best for: people whose priority is SoundCloud’s creator community rather than the widest conventional album catalog.
Which app should you choose?
- You need offline listening without paying
- Try Audiomack first. Confirm that the artists and releases you want are available, then download them in the app.
- You want the broadest mainstream experience
- Compare Spotify Premium and Apple Music. Spotify is a strong playlist and recommendation choice; Apple Music is the more natural fit for users who want everything in Apple’s Music app.
- You mainly discover music through YouTube
- Choose YouTube Music Premium if background play and offline music are worth paying for.
- You listen to independent artists, mixes, and uploads
- Check Audiomack and SoundCloud. Their catalogs can differ substantially, so search for your specific artists before committing to a service.
- You need actual MP3 files
- These services are not the answer by default. Look for a legitimate store or artist that explicitly sells or provides downloadable audio files. Do not assume an in-app offline button creates an exportable file.
How to prepare an iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 for offline music
- Install the current app from the App Store. The phone generation does not by itself determine which music service you need.
- Check the app’s current compatibility listing. Minimum iOS requirements and supported devices can change with updates, so verify them before making a precise compatibility assumption.
- Download on Wi-Fi when possible. Albums and playlists can consume significant mobile data and storage.
- Check available storage. Remove completed downloads, cached material, or unused apps if the iPhone reports low storage.
- Test offline playback. Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, then play several downloaded tracks before leaving home.
- Reconnect periodically. Subscription services may need an account check, and YouTube Music specifically requires an internet connection at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
What these apps cannot promise
- They cannot guarantee that every song or artist is available in every country.
- They do not generally export downloaded catalog tracks as ordinary MP3 files.
- A subscription download is not permanent ownership of the recording.
- A track can become unavailable if licensing changes or the service removes it.
- Ending a subscription can remove access to subscription-based offline downloads.
- The iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 do not require different music services merely because they are different generations.
Bottom line
For the specific goal of free offline music listening on an iPhone 16 or iPhone 17, start with Audiomack. It is the strongest recommendation found because its U.S. App Store listing explicitly supports free downloads for offline playback.
For a larger and more predictable commercial catalog, expect to pay: Spotify Premium is the mainstream playlist choice, Apple Music is the most Apple-native option, and YouTube Music Premium is best for YouTube-centered discovery. SoundCloud Go is a reasonable creator-focused alternative, but its current plan details should be checked locally.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can Spotify download music for free?
No. Spotify has a free tier, but Spotify’s documented downloads for songs, albums, and playlists are a Premium feature.
Is Apple Music free for downloading music?
Apple Music catalog downloads require a subscription. They are also different from songs purchased through the iTunes Store: subscription downloads provide app-managed offline access, not necessarily permanent transferable files.
Do downloaded songs become MP3 files on an iPhone?
Usually not. An offline download stores protected or app-managed content for playback within the service. It does not generally create an MP3 that you can export to Files or another music player.
Do iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 need different music apps?
No. The same apps can be used across both phone generations, provided the current App Store compatibility requirements are met. Check the listing for the app’s current iOS and device requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long do YouTube Music offline downloads last?
YouTube Music Premium offline music downloads must be maintained by reconnecting the app to the internet at least once every 30 days, according to Google’s guidance.
The Bottom Line
Best free pick: Audiomack, provided it has the music you want. Best paid alternatives: Spotify Premium for mainstream playlists, Apple Music for iPhone integration, and YouTube Music Premium for YouTube discovery. In every case, “download” normally means protected offline playback inside the app—not a transferable MP3 file.
