Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose a YouTube Live bitrate based on the resolution and frame rate you send to YouTube, then use the recommendation for your video codec. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, or 10 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Your connection must sustain the stream’s total bitrate, with room to spare.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates by resolution
The table shows YouTube’s published minimum and recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps. Match the row to the resolution and frame rate sent to YouTube, and the column to the codec you use. These are live-stream settings, not recommendations for uploaded videos. YouTube’s retrieved encoder guide shows no publication or revision date; these figures reflect its guidance checked on October 3, 2026. Check YouTube’s encoder guide for current settings.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum / recommended | H.264 minimum / recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 / 35 Mbps | 14 / 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 / 30 Mbps | 11 / 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 / 24 Mbps | 8 / 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 / 15 Mbps | 7 / 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 / 12 Mbps | 6 / 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 / 10 Mbps | 5 / 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
The first number in each cell is YouTube’s minimum; the second is its recommended value. The guide groups AV1 and H.265 together rather than listing separate values for each. Treat recommendations as targets, not guarantees: choose a quality your connection can reliably sustain.
How to select a bitrate
- Set the outgoing resolution and frame rate. Use what your encoder actually sends to YouTube, not merely the resolution of your source footage. A 1080p source streamed as 720p should use the 720p row.
- Identify the video codec. Choose the corresponding H.264 or AV1/H.265 column. If you are unsure which codec your encoder is sending, check its output or streaming settings.
- Use the recommended value if your upload can sustain it. For instance, a 1080p60 H.264 stream uses YouTube’s 17 Mbps recommended video bitrate; 1080p30 H.264 uses 14 Mbps. At 720p, both listed frame rates have an 8 Mbps H.264 recommendation.
- Reduce quality if the connection is not reliable at that rate. A stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to a higher-quality setting that repeatedly loses connection or drops frames.
Encoder settings to check
YouTube’s encoder guide lists the following for RTMP/RTMPS live streams. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the equivalent labels in your encoder, which may vary by software.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC as the supported option.
Advanced video settings
YouTube’s guidance also lists square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames and 1 reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit; for HDR, use 10-bit. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. The 2160p/4K stream settings do not offer the “improve for low latency” option; YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for details.
Make sure your upload connection has enough capacity
The bitrate you send must fit within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate, and warn that other people sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Upload speed may also be lower than download speed, so a download-speed result alone is not enough to assess suitability. The retrieved help page shows no publication date for its 20% guidance. - Run a speed test that reports upload speed, preferably under conditions similar to the planned broadcast.
- Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, including audio and any other stream data.
- Test with motion and audio comparable to the real program; fast movement can reveal problems a static test image will not.
- During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot keep up.
Test the stream before the event
- Connect over Ethernet if you are streaming from a computer and a wired connection is available. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer live streams; it is guidance, not a requirement to buy a particular cable. See YouTube’s filming tips.
- Run an unlisted test stream before the public event. Check that video, audio, motion, resolution, frame rate, and stream health are as expected.
- Make the test representative: YouTube specifically recommends including audio and movement similar to what you will use in the actual stream.
- If the test shows instability, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again rather than assuming the recommended maximum will work on your network.
Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without a computer
If your goal is continuous playback of uploaded video rather than a live camera or one-time event, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
