To stream portrait 9:16 and landscape 16:9 video at the same time, use a platform’s built-in dual-format feature or create separate outputs in streaming software. The best method depends on your destination: YouTube and TikTok offer native workflows, Twitch documents a dual-format setup using OBS, and Restream offers OBS-plugin and hosted-studio options. Set up both layouts and confirm their destinations before going live; some workflows cannot add the second orientation after a stream starts.
Choose a workflow for your platforms

These features, eligibility rules, interfaces, and plan requirements can change. Check the current platform dashboard and documentation before relying on a particular setup.
Set up both orientations before going live
- Choose destinations and formats. Decide which platform should receive portrait, landscape, or both. Check whether each platform treats the two orientations as one dual-format broadcast or as separate events.
- Select the workflow. Start with a platform-native option when it supports your destinations and layout needs. Use OBS with a plugin or a hosted studio when you need separate custom scenes or different orientations across destinations.
- Build and inspect both canvases. Arrange the portrait and landscape views independently where the workflow allows. Keep faces, documentary footage, captions, titles, and alerts inside the visible area for each aspect ratio. A center crop can cut off important action, so do not assume one composition works in both formats.
- Assign audio and destinations. Confirm which mixer feeds each output, which destination receives each orientation, and whether separate stream keys or events are required. With Restream’s OBS plugin, the vertical stream uses the main OBS audio mixer.
- Check encoder capacity and settings. Separate outputs or enhanced broadcasting can add encoding work. Confirm that your system can sustain the configured outputs and that the platform reports a healthy stream; consult the current platform requirements rather than relying on a universal hardware threshold.
- Start a test broadcast and inspect both feeds. Use a private or test option where available. Check each output on its intended device, including framing, text safe areas, overlays, alerts, audio, destination assignment, and stream health.
- Go live only after the test passes. YouTube does not let you add its vertical output after the stream has started. Restream also says orientation must be assigned before going live.
Platform-specific setup notes
YouTube: use Live Control Room dual streaming
YouTube Live Control Room can produce horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. The default vertical view is a center crop, and creators can adjust the layout. If you send the streams from an encoder, YouTube documents RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical stream. Configure dual streaming before the broadcast begins; it cannot be added after the stream has started. See YouTube’s dual-streaming instructions.
Twitch: use Dual Format with OBS and Aitum Vertical
Twitch announced on June 17, 2026, that Dual Format was available to all streamers. Its documented OBS workflow uses Aitum Vertical plus Enhanced Broadcasting. Check Twitch’s current dashboard for server-side transcoding eligibility and its current system requirements: enhanced output can increase encoder load, and the available documentation does not establish one hardware threshold for every setup. TikTok: use LIVE Studio dual layout
TikTok LIVE Studio’s dual layout sends portrait and landscape at once and syncs sources between layouts. You can customize the portrait layout, while landscape adjustments work from the shared sources. Some widgets, including chatbox and ranking widgets, are removed or unsupported in portrait. OBS and Restream: choose plugin or hosted studio
With Restream’s OBS plugin, you can design a vertical scene in OBS and route vertical delivery to selected destinations while maintaining landscape delivery elsewhere. The vertical output uses OBS’s main audio mixer and inherits its encoding parameters, although you can set a separate vertical bitrate. Restream Studio provides a hosted workflow with separate orientation assignment and previews. Overlays and graphics are shared between the two views, and channel orientations must be assigned before the stream. Test the viewer experience, not just the encoder
A stream can be technically healthy while the portrait version hides the subject or makes captions unreadable. Before a public broadcast, inspect each feed on its intended device and check:

- Whether captions, titles, lower thirds, and alerts fit the safe area without covering essential content.
- Whether the right platform or channel receives the intended orientation.
- Whether both outputs carry the expected audio and remain in sync.
- Whether the platform and encoder report healthy output throughout the test.
Troubleshooting common dual-format problems
The vertical stream is cropped incorrectly
A center crop is a common default, not a guarantee that the important content fits. Reframe the portrait layout or choose another available layout, then test it on a phone. Keep key subjects and text within the visible portrait area.
The second orientation is missing
Check that dual-format output was enabled and assigned before going live, and confirm any required second stream key or platform eligibility. YouTube does not allow vertical output to be added after the stream starts; Restream also requires orientation assignment before going live. Stop and reconfigure according to the platform’s workflow rather than assuming a running stream can be changed.

The encoder struggles or the stream becomes unstable
Multiple outputs and Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting can increase encoding load. Review the current system requirements and output configuration, then test again with settings your system can sustain. Do not assume that a machine capable of one output can handle every dual-format or multitrack configuration.
A widget or overlay appears in only one layout
Some platform widgets are unsupported in portrait, and some hosted workflows share overlays across orientations rather than allowing independent designs. Check the destination’s documented behavior and preview both views; simplify or reposition elements that obscure the content.

Audio is missing or routed unexpectedly
Verify the active mixer and output routing. In Restream’s OBS-plugin workflow, the vertical stream uses the main OBS audio mixer, so changes to that mixer affect the vertical output as well.
