There is no single bitrate that suits every Indian broadband connection. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, match YouTube’s live-encoder target to your codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm that the encoder has enough stable upload bandwidth after leaving headroom. A practical starting point is H.264 at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps—but plan for about 17.5 Mbps of sustained upload available to the stream under typical network load. If that margin is unreliable, use 720p30 at 8 Mbps and plan for about 10 Mbps of upload instead.
The headroom figures are calculations using YouTube’s recommendation to leave 20% of upload capacity unused; they are planning guidance, not an India-specific guarantee. A single speed-test peak or the download speed printed in a broadband plan does not establish that a connection can sustain a stream all day.
Choose a live bitrate by codec, resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by format. The table below is for a live encoder sending a stream to YouTube—not for uploading a prerecorded video. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers.
| Live format | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended live-encoder bitrates in its live encoder settings guidance. Use AV1 or H.265 targets only if your encoder and the full streaming workflow support the codec reliably. Otherwise, use the H.264 column.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Practical starting choices
- H.264, 1080p30: 14 Mbps stream bitrate; allow about 17.5 Mbps of stable upload for the stream under ordinary network load.
- H.264, 720p30: 8 Mbps stream bitrate; allow about 10 Mbps of stable upload.
- AV1 or H.265, 1080p30: 10 Mbps stream bitrate; allow about 12.5 Mbps of stable upload.
- AV1 or H.265, 720p30: 6 Mbps stream bitrate; allow about 7.5 Mbps of stable upload.
The upload figures are arithmetic—target bitrate divided by 0.8—not separate thresholds published by YouTube. They apply YouTube’s 20% headroom advice to its recommended stream targets.
How much upload speed does a 24/7 stream need?
The stream’s outbound bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% unused, and warns that other network use can reduce what is available to the stream. Download speed is often higher than upload speed, so an advertised broadband speed or download test alone is not a useful pass/fail check. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

For example, a 100 Mbps plan is not enough information by itself to determine whether 1080p streaming will be stable: the relevant question is the sustained upload available at the streaming location after household use, other uploads and network variation are accounted for. There is no India-wide broadband tier in these recommendations that guarantees a particular live bitrate.
Jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, ISP congestion and concurrent uploads can all make an otherwise promising speed result unreliable. If upload varies, reduce resolution or bitrate rather than configuring around the best momentary reading.

Preflight a connection before leaving it live
- Measure the encoder’s upload path. At the location where the encoder will run, check outbound upload at different times and with normal household or office network use. Prefer a wired connection where practical; it can reduce local Wi-Fi variability, but cannot fix an ISP-side capacity or congestion problem.
- Select a format and bitrate. Choose the codec, resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s live table, then reserve at least the recommended headroom. If the connection cannot hold that margin consistently, step down to a lower target.
- Run a representative private or unlisted test. Use the intended video, audio and motion. YouTube advises testing before going live; check the Live Control Room’s stream health feedback and messages during the test.
- Use stable encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. It supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 or AV1, and recommends RTMPS.
- Re-test after changes. Repeat the preflight if the encoder, network setup or ISP service changes. For continuous operation, document how someone will detect a dropped stream and restore it.
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance also covers stream settings and latency context. A 24/7 bitrate choice cannot by itself guarantee uninterrupted operation: power, encoder stability, connection continuity and a recovery procedure matter too. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish an India-specific uptime guarantee or a universal backup-power specification.
Common bitrate and connection problems
- Stream health degrades even though a speed test looked fast: the test may have measured a peak, a different time, or a different traffic load. Recheck upload during normal use and reduce the bitrate if the encoder cannot sustain it.
- The broadband plan advertises a high number, but the stream buffers or drops: verify upload rather than download speed, and account for other users and uploads competing for bandwidth.
- A higher resolution works briefly but not continuously: do not treat a short successful test as proof of 24/7 capacity. Use a longer representative preflight and choose a lower target if upload fluctuates.
- The encoder’s bitrate setting does not match the intended stream: check that the selected codec, resolution and frame rate correspond to the correct YouTube live-encoder row. Upload-video recommendations are not a substitute for live-ingestion settings.
- The stream stops and does not resume: use a written monitoring and recovery process, then verify the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room state before restarting. YouTube’s cited guidance supports preparation and monitoring but does not define a universal recovery guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a local encoder and connection running around the clock is the difficult part, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
