One Battle after Another won the 2026 Oscar for Writing (Adapted Screenplay)—and it is also my top pick among the five nominees. The Academy announced the winner, not a complete ranking, so the order below is a critical judgment based on adaptation choices, structure, character work, and how fully each film stands on its own.
How this ranking works
The 98th Academy Awards honored films released in 2025 and took place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The Academy’s ceremony page confirms the adapted-screenplay winner and nominees, but does not rank the four films that did not win. See the Academy’s 2026 ceremony results.
This ranking weighs four questions: Does the screenplay make purposeful choices in reshaping its material? Does its structure give those choices force? Are its characters compelling on the page? And does the film work for a viewer who knows nothing about its source? These are critical criteria, not Academy scoring rules.

One Battle after Another — winner
Paul Thomas Anderson’s screenplay takes the top spot because its award-winning result aligns with the strongest overall case across the criteria here: adaptation, structure, character, and independence from its source. Its win is a useful point of reference, not proof that the Academy judged every nominee in a published order. The Academy lists Anderson as the writer and names the film as the category winner. Hamnet
Chloé Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell are credited for the screenplay. The film’s place near the top reflects the weight adaptation can give to intimate human experience: translating a story’s emotional center into a cinematic whole is a substantial achievement in its own right. This is a critical placement, not an official runner-up designation. Academy results.

Train Dreams
Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar share the screenplay credit. Its position recognizes a distinct adaptation challenge: making a film feel complete on its own terms rather than relying on a viewer’s familiarity with a source. The Academy’s record establishes the nomination and writing credit; the ranking is my assessment, not an Academy order. Academy results.

Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro is credited as writer for the screen. A familiar title can bring expectations that an adaptation must either satisfy or deliberately unsettle; that makes the screenplay’s choices central to the experience. The Academy also lists Frankenstein as a Best Picture nominee and the Costume Design winner. Those honors are separate from this critical ranking. Academy results.

Bugonia
Will Tracy wrote the screenplay. It rounds out this list not because a nomination implies a fixed place below the other four, but because a ranking has to distinguish among excellent work. The Academy confirms its adapted-screenplay nomination and Tracy’s credit; its ceremony results do not give the non-winning nominees a formal order. Academy results.

What the Oscar result does—and does not—tell us
The Academy named One Battle after Another the category winner. Its January 22, 2026 announcement explains that nominees in each branch’s category are selected by members of that branch, while final voting is conducted by secret online ballot and tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers. That describes the award process; it does not turn the result into a published ranking of all five films. Read the Academy’s nominations announcement.
