There is no uncontested best album of the 1980s: the answer changes with the voters and the criteria. A useful critics’ starting point is Pitchfork’s 2018 list, which puts Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain at No. 1. A different result comes from a BBC Radio 2 expert-panel poll reported by NME, which names U2’s The Joshua Tree its top album. Here are standout records from the decade, with the rankings treated as informed guides rather than a final verdict.
How to read a “best of the 1980s” list
Pitchfork’s 200 Best Albums of the 1980s, published September 10, 2018, was based on votes from more than 50 full-time staffers and regular contributors. It is a critics’ retrospective, not a sales chart. Pitchfork’s editors also acknowledged that their 2002 predecessor reflected a narrower editorial perspective; the updated list aimed to broaden both its contributors and its musical range, as explained in the September 7, 2018 announcement.
A contrasting poll offers another angle. NME reported that a BBC Radio 2 expert panel considered decade best-sellers, enduring icons and records that became classics over time. Its reported top four were U2’s The Joshua Tree, Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms, The Stone Roses’ self-titled debut and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, in that order. That is the result of that poll, not a universal ranking.
Five essential starting points from Pitchfork’s list
These picks offer a route into pop and R&B, hip-hop and art-pop, rather than a rock-only survey. Years and rankings below refer to Pitchfork’s 2018 list.

| Album | Year | Pitchfork rank | What makes it a useful starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prince and the Revolution, Purple Rain | 1984 | #1 | Live-show energy, arena-ready hits and a semi-autobiographical film connection. |
| Michael Jackson, Thriller | 1982 | #2 | Polished pop and memorable singles, with success shaped by MTV and a pre-streaming monoculture. |
| N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton | 1988 | #3 | A landmark in rap’s relationship with pop culture and politics; its importance does not mean it invented gangsta rap. |
| Kate Bush, Hounds of Love | 1985 | #4 | Moves from accessible singles to a more conceptual second side, resisting easy genre labels. |
| Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back | 1988 | #6 | The Bomb Squad’s sample-heavy, confrontational production meets politically charged subjects. |
Pitchfork describes Thriller as one of the best-selling albums, but the cited passage supplies no sales figure. The ranking is a critical placement, not a claim that these five records define every important sound of the decade.
Choose by the listening experience you want
For big hooks and immediate impact
Start with Purple Rain or Thriller. Pitchfork highlights the former’s arena-ready songs and live-show feel; for the latter, it points to polished pop and singles whose reach was amplified by MTV. These are accessible entry points without reducing the decade to chart success.

For conceptual shifts and art-pop

For hip-hop with political force
Listen to Straight Outta Compton and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. Pitchfork emphasizes the former’s impact on rap, popular culture and politics, and the latter’s dense, sample-built production and political subjects. They are distinct records, not interchangeable examples of one sound.

Why other strong lists reach different winners
The BBC Radio 2 poll’s reported No. 1, The Joshua Tree, differs from Pitchfork’s Purple Rain partly because the lists use different approaches. Pitchfork asked staffers and regular contributors to make a critics’ retrospective; the BBC panel, as described in NME’s report, also considered popularity and lasting recognition. A combined ranking would require decisions about how to weigh ballots, commercial history, genre breadth and later influence—there is no neutral formula that makes one winner objective.
The BBC poll details here come from NME’s 2020 report; the page was not accessible for direct confirmation, so treat its reported order and summarized criteria as that outlet’s account. Pitchfork’s introduction to its own list also points to the decade’s range, including punk and hardcore, new wave, indie, metal, jazz and ambient music, folk and R&B. The five albums above are a focused starting set, not a complete map of those scenes.

How to build your own 1980s album list
- Pick a listening route. Choose whether you want immediate pop hooks, album-side sequencing, politically engaged rap or a broader survey across scenes.
- Use rankings as discovery tools. Note the list-maker and its method before treating an order as meaningful; a critics’ ballot and an expert panel weighing best-sellers answer different questions.
- Expand beyond the first familiar names. Use a broad retrospective such as Pitchfork’s list to explore the decade’s punk, new wave, indie, metal, jazz, ambient, folk and R&B alongside its best-known pop and rap albums.
- Judge albums on their own terms. Consider the sound, the listening experience and the release year; influence claims should stay attached to the source making them.
Optional: finding a physical copy
If you want a physical copy, look for a specific edition of an album you already want to hear—for example, Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain. Edition, format, stock and price depend on the retailer and can change, so verify the listing before buying. A physical format is optional; it is not a requirement for exploring the music.
