It works best as an additional way to take part—not as a promise of the same interaction or community experience as gathering together. It also takes reliable technology and people to produce and monitor the service.
How live streaming helps people access worship
It makes attendance more convenient
In a November 2022 survey of U.S. adults, reported by Pew Research Center in 2023, 43% of people who regularly watched religious services online or on television said convenience was a major reason; another 31% said it was a minor reason. In total, 74% named convenience as a major or minor reason. Respondents could select more than one reason, so these figures are not mutually exclusive. Pew Research Center
For someone who is travelling, caring for family, working around a difficult schedule, or temporarily unable to leave home, a stream can make it easier to follow a service without making the journey to church. The practical benefit is access; it does not require the viewer to treat online attendance as a replacement for every part of in-person worship.
It reaches people beyond the local area
The same Pew survey found that 34% of regular virtual viewers cited access to services held far from home as a major reason for watching, while 60% named it as a major or minor reason. A stream may help someone keep up with a former congregation after a move, or watch a service from a church or community they cannot readily visit.

It can reduce barriers related to illness, disability, or care settings
Sixteen percent of regular virtual viewers in Pew’s U.S. survey said illness or disability was a major reason they watched online or on television. Separately, Church of Scotland guidance describes a member with failing eyesight who said a stream let her appreciate a baptism, and around 30 nursing-home residents who worshipped through an internet stream with help from an activities coordinator. These are different kinds of evidence: the Pew figure is a survey result, while the Church of Scotland examples illustrate individual situations rather than measuring outcomes across congregations. Streaming can complement in-person worship
Online access need not be an either-or choice. In Pew’s 2023 report, 17% of U.S. adults said they both regularly attended services in person and watched them virtually. People may use a stream when travel is difficult, then return to the building when they can, or use it to stay connected to a congregation while away.

During the exceptional March–July 2020 lockdown period in England, more than 9,000 churches (78%) offered a “Church at Home” option through online, email, post, or telephone, and more than 8,000 (69%) offered livestreamed or prerecorded services. The Church of England reported those figures in 2021. They show how churches in England adapted during that lockdown; they do not establish current adoption everywhere or prove that online services caused attendance or membership growth. What a stream does not automatically provide
Watching remotely does not guarantee the same sense of connection or participation as being in the room. In Pew’s November 2022 U.S. survey, 65% of regular in-person attenders said they felt a great deal or quite a bit of connection with other people attending in person. Among regular virtual viewers, 28% reported that level of connection with people attending the service in person, and 22% with other people watching virtually. One-quarter of regular virtual viewers said they felt like active participants.

About half of regular virtual viewers said they usually watched alone. Still, 39% said they often did things they would do in person, such as pray aloud, sing, or kneel. A well-run stream can make these forms of participation possible, but viewers’ experiences vary. Churches can describe the stream honestly as a route to worship and continuity, while giving people ways to connect with others where practical.
Live streaming, recordings, and other remote options
A live stream lets people watch a service as it happens. A prerecorded service can be watched later and may be easier to schedule and produce; audio, email, or telephone options can help people who have limited bandwidth, devices, or confidence with video. Church of Scotland guidance distinguishes live streaming from prerecorded video and audio, and notes that live streaming generally places greater demands on technology and production.

| Option | What it offers | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Live stream | Remote viewers can follow the service as it happens. | More technical demands, including bandwidth and processing power, plus someone to produce and monitor the broadcast. |
| Prerecorded service | Viewers can watch at a time that suits them. | Recording, editing, and publishing still take time; it is not interactive in the same way as a live gathering. |
| Audio, email, post, or telephone | Can provide a way to follow worship without relying on a live video stream. | Choose an option that fits the congregation’s access needs and explain how people can receive it. |
What a church should plan before streaming
Live streaming is a ministry and production commitment, not just a camera pointed at the front. Church of Scotland guidance says it has higher technical demands, especially for bandwidth and processing power, and that someone other than the worship leader will usually need to produce and monitor the stream. These planning checks are practical considerations, not results from a controlled trial.
- Test the internet connection. Check reliability where the service will be streamed and consider what viewers should do if the feed drops.
- Make sound intelligible. Worshippers joining remotely need to hear speech, music, and the parts of the service that matter. Check audio coverage from the viewer’s perspective, not only from inside the building.
- Check camera coverage. Decide what viewers need to see, including who leads and any important moments in the service. Equipment needs depend on the room, budget, sound setup, network conditions, and volunteer capacity; no particular camera is required for every church.
- Assign a producer or monitor. The person leading worship should not also have to manage every technical issue during the service.
- Offer a fallback route. Provide an alternative way to access worship if someone cannot use video or the stream fails.
- Review rights and privacy. Confirm that the church has permission for music, video, readings, and any other material it broadcasts, and consider how people in the congregation are shown. Requirements vary by location and by the material used; do not assume that a song or recording is cleared for online streaming just because it is used in person.
Evidence of churches adapting to online worship
Alongside its lockdown service figures, the Church of England reported in 2021 that 7,000 people received training in digital communications, live streaming, and online communities in 2020—seven times the previous year’s figure. That is evidence of a major period of training and adaptation in England, not a measure of the current staffing or streaming capacity of churches elsewhere. In the report, Dr Ken Eames of the Church of England’s Research and Statistics Unit reflected on how the shift exceeded expectations. Read the Church of England report

A repository abstract for a rural online-worship study describes perceived benefits including convenience and accessibility, access to other congregations’ services, connections with other communities, and opportunities for faith development. The abstract says the Covid-19 & Church-21 Survey drew responses from 4,536 Episcopal Church members; it does not say that all respondents were rural or provide prevalence estimates for those themes.
