If BBC iPlayer is not working, first work out whether the fault affects the BBC service, your internet connection or just one device. Check for an outage, then close and reopen iPlayer, restart the device and router, and install available updates. If the problem persists, the fixes differ for a TV, phone, app or browser.
Start with these quick checks
- Close the programme, then force-close the BBC iPlayer app or browser tab.
- Open iPlayer again and try a different programme. A single programme may be unavailable even when the service works.
- Try another streaming service or website on the same device.
- Restart the device. For a TV or streaming box, BBC recommends unplugging it for about one minute before reconnecting it.
- Restart your router and reconnect the device.
- Update iPlayer and the device’s operating system or firmware.
- Clear the app cache, or reinstall the app if less disruptive steps fail. Clearing app data may sign you out.
- Temporarily turn off VPNs, proxies, browser extensions or unusual DNS services.
- Try iPlayer on another device or platform.
BBC’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the connection, restarting the device, updating the app and operating system, and reinstalling the app where needed.
Is BBC iPlayer down?
Check the BBC Help site for service information, then compare a few devices and programmes. The UK Downdetector page can show a rise in user reports, but it is not an official BBC confirmation.

- A local problem is more likely if only one device or the TV app fails, or if iPlayer works on another network.
If there appears to be an outage, repeated reinstalls are unlikely to help. Wait and try again later.

Diagnose a connection or buffering problem
Check whether other streaming services work and whether the fault affects every device. If iPlayer works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi, focus on the home network; if other services also buffer, the connection or internet provider may be responsible.
- Restart the router and test another website or streaming service.
- Move nearer to the router, or connect by Ethernet if available.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups or other heavy network use and try again.
- If practical, test a phone hotspot briefly. This is a diagnostic, not necessarily a suitable permanent connection.
- Check your internet provider’s service status if several devices or services are affected.
BBC recommends trying a wired connection or another platform when playback problems persist. See its further playback troubleshooting. Avoid treating bandwidth figures for the international BBC Player service as official requirements for UK BBC iPlayer.

Fix iPlayer on a smart TV or streaming device
- Exit iPlayer completely and restart the TV or streaming device.
- If restarting normally does not help, unplug the device for about one minute, then reconnect it.
- Restart the router and check that the TV is connected to the internet.
- Install available TV firmware and iPlayer app updates.
- Check the TV’s date and time are set automatically, its region is correct, and it has available storage.
- Clear the app cache if the TV offers that option. If necessary, delete and reinstall iPlayer from the official app store.
- Test iPlayer on a phone or computer, or try another device connected to the TV.
Menu names vary by manufacturer and model. If the app is missing from the official store or the TV says it is unsupported, do not assume a third-party download will fix it. The model may not meet current requirements, or its manufacturer may no longer provide the necessary updates. Check the BBC’s current supported apps and devices information.
If the television itself is the weak link, an external streaming device with the official iPlayer app may be more practical than replacing the TV. Confirm the exact model’s UK app availability and compatibility first. Replacing the television is usually unnecessary if its screen and inputs work.

Fix the iPlayer app on a phone or tablet
Android
- Force-stop iPlayer, then reopen it.
- In Settings, open Apps or Applications, select BBC iPlayer, then Storage and Clear cache. Exact labels vary by device.
- If that fails, try Clear data. This can sign you out, so make sure you can access your account first.
- Update Android and iPlayer through the device’s official app store. Reinstall iPlayer if needed.
iPhone or iPad
- Force-close iPlayer and restart the device.
- Install available iOS or iPadOS and iPlayer updates.
- If the problem continues, delete and reinstall iPlayer from the App Store, then sign in again.
For Fire TV and similar streaming devices, also check available storage, app updates and system updates. Use the official store; an app missing from it may indicate a compatibility or support issue.
Fix iPlayer in a web browser
- Try iPlayer in a private or incognito window and play a different programme.
- If that works, disable extensions one at a time, especially ad, privacy, script, VPN or proxy extensions.
- Clear BBC site cookies and cached files, then restart the browser.
- Check that cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- Update the browser and operating system, or try another current browser.
- If you are on a work, school or public network, test another network if possible; filtering may interfere with streaming or sign-in.
If private browsing fixes the issue, stored site data or an extension is a likely cause. Browser settings differ, so use your browser’s own help instructions rather than assuming a universal menu path.

Location, VPN and sign-in problems
BBC iPlayer is primarily a UK service. If you are in the UK but iPlayer says you are outside it, turn off VPNs, proxies and VPN browser extensions, then restart the app or browser. A security or DNS service can also route traffic in a way that affects location checks. If the issue remains, your internet provider may be able to investigate whether your IP address is incorrectly located.

Access is based in part on device geolocation; having a UK BBC account or TV Licence does not necessarily override an IP address that appears to be abroad. BBC explains this distinction in its guidance about location and access to BBC.com or the BBC app. If you are outside the UK, do not assume a VPN will provide access: endpoints may be recognised or blocked. BBC iPlayer, BBC.com and the international BBC Player are different services.

For an account or activation loop, sign out if possible, close the app, restart the device, update iPlayer and sign in again. If a TV sign-in is stuck, test the account in a browser and check that browser cookies are enabled. Reinstalling may help, but it can clear a session. An account alone does not guarantee iPlayer access outside the UK.
Common symptoms and error codes

Do not assume a code always has one cause. BBC has published guidance for a specific connected-TV issue involving error 02050; that does not establish the cause of every occurrence. Search the exact code on the current BBC Help site.
Do you need a TV Licence?
In the UK, you must be covered by a TV Licence to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer, including on a TV, computer, phone, tablet or games console. This is a legal requirement, not a technical repair for buffering or an app fault. See TV Licensing’s iPlayer guidance.
When to contact support
If the issue remains after you have checked for an outage, tested your connection and tried another platform, contact BBC Help. If only the TV app fails, the manufacturer may need to address firmware or device compatibility. Before contacting support, note the complete error message or code, TV or device model, app and operating-system versions, whether other programmes work, and whether iPlayer works on another device or network.
A factory reset deletes settings and may remove accounts. Reserve it for a last resort, after checking the manufacturer’s instructions and confirming that you can restore your settings and sign in again.
