Bastar: The Naxal Story is a forceful, graphic political drama whose performances give it emotional urgency, but its portrayal of a complicated conflict is criticized for narrowing the politics into a blunt good-versus-evil story. If you want an intense thriller, it may hold your attention; if you want a nuanced account of Maoist insurgency, this film is not a substitute for one.
What is Bastar: The Naxal Story about?
Directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the 2024 Hindi action-crime drama runs 2 hours and 4 minutes. It follows IPS officer Neerja Madhavan, played by Adah Sharma, in a campaign against Maoist insurgents in Chhattisgarh. The film also follows Ratna, played by Indira Tiwari, a tribal woman who joins the Special Police Officers after her husband is killed. These are elements of the film’s dramatized story, not independently verified accounts of real events.
The film opened theatrically on March 15, 2024. ZEE5 lists its streaming premiere as May 17, 2024, on its official film page.
Does the film explain the conflict or simplify it?
This is the central weakness identified across the reviews: the film brings its political position forward more clearly than it explains the political landscape. India Today’s Zinia Bandyopadhyay gave it 1 out of 5 stars, arguing that the complex history is reduced to a simple good-versus-evil frame. Critic excerpts displayed by Rotten Tomatoes also point to limited nuance and political complexity.

The Times of India’s Abhishek Srivastava was more favorable, rating the film 3 out of 5, but likewise found that the political landscape needed deeper exploration. He wrote: “While ‘Bastar’ engages audiences for much of its duration, a deeper exploration of the political landscape could have enhanced the narrative, and made this a finer watch.”
That limitation matters especially for viewers approaching the film as a documentary or an account of the insurgency. The Times of India describes it as inspired by real incidents and characters but fictionalized, with names altered. The film’s events and dialogue should therefore be read as dramatization, not as a verified history. The cited reviews do not establish whether its political claims are accurate.

How graphic is the violence?
The violence is deliberately intense, but for India Today it crosses into sensationalism. Bandyopadhyay criticized the graphic presentation, finding that it amplifies the film’s blunt framing rather than adding insight into the conflict. Viewers sensitive to gore should expect a harsh, confrontational tone rather than a restrained political drama.
Do the performances give the story emotional weight?
Adah Sharma’s Neerja provides the film with a forceful central presence. Srivastava praised Sharma as well as Indira Tiwari, whose Ratna gives the story a more personal line through grief and recruitment into the Special Police Officers. Tiwari also stood out to Bandyopadhyay as one of the film’s strengths. The performances help sustain the drama, even when the screenplay gives its characters and political setting less room to develop.

The Times of India review describes the atmosphere as gritty and finds the film engaging for much of its duration. It also criticizes the screenplay and says the background music can be distracting. The result is uneven: the film has momentum and an emphatic mood, but its craft does not consistently deepen the story it is telling.

Individual critics disagreed on how much the film’s intensity compensates for its limitations. The figures below reflect the cited reviews and Rotten Tomatoes page as accessed in 2026; the audience score is based on a small number of ratings, not a representative survey.

Watch it for an intense, graphic political thriller and performances that reviewers found compelling, particularly Tiwari’s. Skip it if your main aim is a balanced explanation of the Maoist movement or the history of the conflict: the cited criticism points to a film that dramatizes forcefully but leaves political context underexplored. A review excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes notes the movement’s complex history and the substantial writing devoted to understanding it; the film is best treated as a starting point for questions, not as their answer.
