Choose BandLab if you use Android, Windows, Chromebook or mixed devices, need cloud collaboration, or want fast beat and vocal tools. Choose GarageBand if you already own a Mac, iPhone or iPad and want a polished, local-first recording workflow with strong instruments, guitar amps and a clear path to Logic Pro. Neither replaces a full professional DAW for unrestricted, complex production.
The fundamental difference
BandLab is a browser-and-mobile music service combining a cloud DAW, social creator network and artist tools. GarageBand is Apple’s standalone music-production application for Mac, iPhone and iPad. They overlap in recording, MIDI, instruments, loops and mixing, but they are built around different priorities.
- BandLab: cross-platform access, cloud projects, collaboration, beatmaking, vocal processing, AI-assisted features and publishing.
- GarageBand: integrated Apple hardware, a conventional timeline, built-in instruments, guitar and bass amps, Drummer and local project work.
BandLab’s Studio supports recording, virtual instruments, MIDI import, imported audio, loops and sharing in a browser or phone app (BandLab Studio guide). Apple documents GarageBand’s instruments, effects, loops, amps, Smart Controls and Drummer (GarageBand for Mac).
Compatibility: the quickest answer
| Platform or requirement | BandLab | GarageBand |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Web browser and mobile app options | Yes |
| iPhone/iPad | Yes | Yes |
| Android | Yes | No |
| Windows | Web browser | No |
| Chromebook | Web browser | No |
| Browser DAW | Yes; latest Chrome is recommended | No |
| Internet | Active connection required | More suitable for local work; connected services still need internet |
BandLab’s platform documentation lists web, Android, iOS and iPadOS support and says an active internet connection is required (supported platforms and system requirements). That page lists Android 8.2+ and iOS 15.5+, while the current U.S. App Store listing says iOS 16.0+, so check your device and store listing before installing (BandLab on the U.S. App Store). GarageBand is not available for Windows, Android or the browser (Apple GarageBand support).

Cost and the meaning of “free”
GarageBand
GarageBand is a free Apple application, but compatible Apple hardware is required. It has no BandLab-style Membership subscription.
BandLab
BandLab retains a usable free tier, but paid Membership now gates some sounds, AI tools, mastering options, artist services and larger allowances. BandLab’s July 31, 2026 FAQ lists Pro at $14.99 per month after a three-day trial, annual Pro at $99 for the first year and $149 afterward, and Max annual pricing at $199 for the first year and $299 afterward; Max monthly pricing is marked “Coming Soon” (Membership FAQ). The U.S. App Store lists Pro at $14.99 monthly and $149.99 for 12 months (U.S. App Store listing). Prices vary by country, platform and promotion, so verify the checkout screen.
Which is easier to learn?
GarageBand is usually faster for a beginner who wants a traditional song timeline: create an instrument or audio track, record, arrange regions, set volume and pan, add effects, then export. Its focused interface is consistent across Apple hardware.

BandLab is quicker for experimenting with a phone, loops, templates, AutoPitch and sharing, but the wider platform introduces accounts, cloud storage, notifications, subscriptions and differences between web and mobile. Therefore, GarageBand is generally easier for structured recording; BandLab is easier for immediate mobile ideas, beats, vocals and cross-device work.
Recommended Free Tools
Recording vocals, instruments and guitars
Both apps accept microphones and instruments through compatible hardware. BandLab supports a USB microphone or audio interface; create a Voice/Audio, Guitar or Bass track and select the input and channel (BandLab input setup).
- BandLab strengths: fast phone recording, AutoPitch, vocal presets, Voice Cleaner and Voice Changer (some are Membership features), simple sharing and collaboration.
- GarageBand strengths: guitar and bass amps, cabinets, stompboxes, microphone-positioning options, Smart Controls, traditional editing and Apple’s Drummer.
A phone microphone is convenient rather than equivalent to a properly placed studio microphone. Room acoustics, performance, gain staging and monitoring affect the result more than the app. Bluetooth headphones commonly add latency during live monitoring.

Instruments, loops, samples and beatmaking
BandLab’s current App Store description advertises virtual instruments, Drum Machine, Sampler, Looper, SongStarter, AutoPitch, Splitter stem separation, mastering, AI tools, vocal and guitar presets, BandLab Sounds and BandLab Beats. It advertises more than 250,000 royalty-free sounds, but access and quotas differ by plan (App Store listing).
GarageBand emphasizes an integrated library of software instruments, genre loops, synths, effects, guitar and bass amps, lessons and Drummer. Apple lists 28 drummers and three percussionists across six genres, plus 100 EDM- and hip-hop-inspired synth sounds on its Mac page (GarageBand for Mac).

Editing, mixing and project limits
| Capability | BandLab | GarageBand |
|---|---|---|
| Project duration | Up to 15 minutes | Not stated as one universal limit; depends on version and device |
| Tracks | Studio guide: 16 audio/MIDI tracks; Membership limit page: up to 32 | Apple states up to 255 audio tracks on Mac |
| Automated help | Mastering, AutoMix and other AI tools; availability varies | Primarily manual production, instruments, effects and Drummer |
BandLab’s “unlimited projects” wording refers to how many projects can be stored, not unlimited complexity. Its official guides establish the 15-minute duration limit for free and paid users and distinguish 16-track standard projects from the 32-track Membership allowance (Studio guide; project limits). Apple’s 255-audio-track figure applies specifically to GarageBand for Mac, not automatically to every iPhone or iPad project.
BandLab is convenient for presets, quick mastering and mobile drafts. GarageBand better teaches regions, signal chains, panning, effects and conventional arrangement. Neither guarantees a professional mix: automated processing is a starting point, not a substitute for critical listening and revision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI and automated tools
BandLab has the more visible AI toolbox: SongStarter, AI FX Preset Generator, Voice Cleaner, AutoMix, Voice Changer, Splitter, AutoPitch and mastering assistance. Features may be free, Membership-only or quota-limited (Membership FAQ). AI can generate ideas, remove noise, separate stems or suggest balance, but artifacts and loss of control are possible. GarageBand’s advertised workflow centers on manual recording, effects, instruments and Drummer rather than a large subscription-gated AI suite.

Collaboration, cloud access and privacy
BandLab is the clear fit for cloud-oriented collaboration: projects are saved online, accessible through web and mobile, and connected to sharing and a creator network. Web and mobile features are not identical (platform documentation). Internet reliability, account access, permissions and matching sounds or app versions can affect a shared project.
GarageBand is primarily a local Apple production app. It supports sharing and project transfer inside Apple’s ecosystem, but it is not equivalent to BandLab’s browser-first social collaboration. For any cloud workflow, export local mixes, stems and MIDI; cloud storage alone is not a complete backup.
Export and portability
BandLab supports combinations of MIDI, MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, AAC and OGG across web, iOS and Android. On the web, individual tracks can be exported as MIDI or WAV; mixdowns include M4A and 16-bit WAV at 44.1 kHz (supported formats). To create a mixdown on the web, use Project → Download → Mixdown As (BandLab downloading guide).
Distinguish a stereo mix from stems, MIDI and an editable project. An MP3 or WAV mix is convenient for listening; stems preserve separate parts; MIDI preserves note information; a fully editable project may not transfer all instruments, effects and automation to another DAW. BandLab currently does not support exporting individual project segments or sections, according to its download guide.

When neither app is enough
Move to Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reaper or another full DAW when you need unrestricted project length, extensive routing, deep automation, broad third-party plug-in workflows, surround or spatial production, or large professional sessions. Logic Pro is the most direct Apple-side progression from GarageBand; FL Studio and Ableton Live suit more advanced beat and electronic workflows; Reaper offers substantial desktop routing and editing depth; Soundtrap is another browser-based collaboration option. Check each product’s current pricing and feature tiers before buying.
Final decision
BandLab is the better platform: it reaches more devices and combines cloud projects, collaboration, vocal tools, AI, social publishing and artist services. GarageBand is the better traditional beginner DAW for Apple owners who want a focused local workflow, strong built-in instruments, guitar and bass modeling, Drummer and a natural Logic Pro upgrade path. Start with the app that matches your device, internet access, project length, collaboration needs and tolerance for subscriptions—not a universal winner.
