Balto’s Nome Run Explained: Togo Led the Longest Leg of the 1925 Serum Relay

Balto helped save Nome, but he did not carry the diphtheria antitoxin across Alaska alone. Gunnar Kaasen’s team, led by Balto, completed the final leg into Nome. Leonhard Seppala and his lead dog Togo covered the relay’s longest and most hazardous individual section. The medicine reached Nome through a coordinated relay of many teams, so calling either dog the sole “savior” distorts what happened.

What the 1925 Nome serum run actually was

Nome faced a diphtheria outbreak during the winter of 1925. The town needed antitoxin, but the medicine had to be moved over a vast winter route by sled because ordinary transport could not get it there in time. A succession of mushers and dog teams carried the package from Nenana toward Nome, handing it from one team to the next. The Alaska State Archives describes the trail as 674 miles long.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s collection record describes a chain of 20 sled-dog teams. In that museum account, the serum covered the final roughly 700 miles in just over five days. The apparent difference between 674 and 700 miles is a reminder that historical accounts may measure the route differently or round the distance. Neither figure means one team traveled that entire span.

The mission succeeded because every handoff worked: a team had to arrive, transfer the medicine safely, and keep moving despite darkness, cold, wind and difficult trail conditions. Balto’s team was one link in that chain, not the whole chain.

Who carried the medicine, and who finished the delivery?

Team or source description Role in the relay What the record establishes
Multiple mushers and dog teams Linked relay from Nenana toward Nome The antitoxin moved through a chain of 20 teams, according to the Smithsonian museum record.
Leonhard Seppala and lead dog Togo Longest individual section, including a dangerous central crossing The National Park Service identifies Togo’s team as covering the relay’s longest and especially hazardous part.
Gunnar Kaasen and lead dog Balto Final leg into Nome The team carrying the serum completed the last approach and arrived in Nome.

This division answers the two questions that are often collapsed into one. Balto really did lead the team that brought the package into Nome at the end. Togo really did lead Seppala’s team over the longest individual leg. Those statements are compatible because the event was a relay.

Why Togo and Seppala’s contribution is often called the largest

The National Park Service’s biography of Togo says that Balto often receives the credit even though Togo led a dangerous part of the journey: NPS biography of Togo. A 2025 Smithsonian Magazine account gives Seppala’s travel as 261 miles in total, of which 135 miles were made while carrying the medicine: Smithsonian Magazine, January 28, 2025.

That 261-mile figure is not a claim that Togo’s team carried the serum for 261 miles. The source distinguishes the total distance Seppala traveled from the 135 miles traveled with the antitoxin. It also does not turn the other teams’ work into a footnote: the relay still depended on every preceding and following leg.

“Most of the work” therefore needs a precise meaning. If it means the longest individual distance assigned to one team, Togo and Seppala are the best-supported answer. If it means most of the entire relay, no single dog completed most of the route; the medicine advanced through the combined mileage of all the teams.

What Balto’s team did on the final leg

Balto was the lead dog for Gunnar Kaasen’s team on the final run into Nome. The Smithsonian museum record identifies Balto with that last stage, and the Associated Press’ centennial account likewise describes Kaasen’s team as completing the final leg: Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection record and Associated Press, 2025.

The final approach mattered operationally. The team had to keep the antitoxin moving until it reached Nome, where it could be used during the outbreak. A final-leg arrival is also easy for the public to visualize: one team appears at the destination with the package, while the earlier handoffs happen out of sight along hundreds of miles of trail. That visibility helps explain why Balto’s name became attached to the story more strongly than the names of many relay partners.

Recognizing Balto’s real role does not require treating him as the only hero. He and Kaasen completed the mission’s last link; they did not replace the teams that had already carried the medicine across Alaska.

Why the relay model changes the “Balto versus Togo” argument

They were not competing to carry one package from start to finish

The popular version of the story can sound like a race between two dogs, with one declared the winner. The historical task was different. It was an emergency transport organized as sequential legs. Teams ran different sections, and the serum changed hands as the relay progressed. Comparing Balto and Togo as if both attempted the same complete route creates a contest that the mission itself did not have.

Longest leg and final leg are different achievements

A long central crossing tests endurance over distance and exposes a team to hazards over a larger section of trail. A final leg carries a different responsibility: bringing the medicine into the quarantined community so treatment can begin. The record supports praise for both achievements without ranking one as the only contribution that mattered.

The other teams are part of the answer

The museum’s count of 20 teams is important because it prevents the story from shrinking to two famous dogs. Each team’s handoff preserved the schedule. A missed connection, a lost package or a team unable to continue could have delayed the antitoxin, regardless of how well another team performed later.

How far did the serum travel?

Several reputable accounts use different totals. They should be quoted with their original scope rather than blended into one supposedly exact number.

Figure What it describes Source and qualification
261 miles Seppala’s total travel in the account, including trips with and without the medicine Smithsonian Magazine (2025); the same account specifies 135 miles with the serum.
135 miles Seppala’s travel while carrying the antitoxin Smithsonian Magazine (2025), distinct from his 261-mile total.
674 miles Route from Nenana to Nome Alaska State Archives route description; the page does not state a publication year.
About 700 miles Distance the museum account assigns to the final journey Smithsonian National Museum of American History record (1999); described as completed in just over five days by 20 teams.

These figures answer different questions. The 261-mile and 135-mile numbers concern Seppala’s travel and serum-carrying portion. The 674-mile and approximately 700-mile numbers describe the broader Nenana–Nome journey in two institutional accounts. Treating them as contradictory measurements of one identical segment loses the context that makes each number useful.

A step-by-step view of the emergency transport

  1. Nome’s outbreak created an urgent need. Diphtheria threatened the community during winter, and antitoxin had to be brought in from outside.
  2. The medicine started at Nenana. The relay route headed west toward Nome across the Alaskan winter trail.
  3. Teams took assigned sections. The Smithsonian museum record counts 20 sled-dog teams in the chain, with handoffs keeping the package moving.
  4. Seppala and Togo handled the longest individual leg. Their section is the part emphasized by the National Park Service and the 2025 Smithsonian feature, including the 135 miles Seppala traveled with the serum in that account.
  5. Other teams continued the relay. Their work connected the longer central sections to the approach to Nome.
  6. Kaasen and Balto completed the final leg. Their arrival delivered the antitoxin into Nome, which is why Balto is inseparable from the public memory of the event.

The sequence shows why “who saved Nome?” has a collective answer. The medicine was useful only when the complete chain—from dispatch to final arrival—held together.

What the outbreak records tell us about the stakes

The Associated Press’ 2025 centennial report says the official record listed five deaths and 29 illnesses. The same report cautions that the toll may have been higher because cases among Alaska Native people were not accurately tracked: AP centennial report. Those numbers should be presented as the historical official count reported by the AP, not as a complete modern accounting of every case.

This qualification matters because the urgency of the relay is sometimes reduced to a neat statistic. The outbreak was a public-health emergency, but the surviving records do not provide a perfectly complete case count. A careful account can state both facts: officials recorded five deaths and 29 illnesses, and the historical record may undercount Alaska Native cases.

Why Balto became the name most people remember

Balto’s fame follows the visibility of his assignment. The dog and Kaasen were the team seen at the destination with the medicine, so later retellings naturally centered the final arrival. That is a powerful image, but it is not evidence that Balto’s team covered the longest distance or that it carried the serum alone.

The imbalance in recognition is exactly what the National Park Service and Smithsonian coverage correct. Their accounts keep Balto’s achievement intact while restoring Togo, Seppala and the other relay teams to the story. The correction is not “Balto did nothing.” It is that a successful final leg should not erase the dangerous long leg or the network of teams that made the delivery possible.

The most accurate way to answer the headline question

  • Did Balto help save Nome? Yes. His team completed the final leg carrying the antitoxin into Nome.
  • Did Balto carry the serum across the entire route? No. The medicine moved through a relay of 20 teams.
  • Did another dog do most of the work? Togo led the longest individual leg, but “most” cannot accurately describe the entire relay as one dog’s job.
  • Why is Balto better known? His team’s visible arrival at Nome made the final leg the most memorable part of the story.
  • What should not be claimed? Do not turn varying route totals into one unqualified number, and do not present the official illness and death figures as a complete count of every case.

The defensible historical verdict is therefore shared credit with differentiated roles: Togo and Seppala made the longest individual contribution identified in the major accounts, Balto and Kaasen completed the final delivery, and the other teams supplied the links that turned those efforts into a lifesaving relay.
