Bad Trip is hilarious if your idea of comedy includes dead-serious performances, escalating public awkwardness and raunchy hidden-camera chaos. It is less successful as a conventional buddy movie, because the scripted road-trip story mainly functions as a delivery system for the pranks. At 84 minutes, the film moves quickly, and the contrast between Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery gives the stunts a surprisingly warm center.
What Bad Trip is really doing
Released in the United States on March 26, 2021, Bad Trip combines two formats that usually pull in opposite directions. One is a scripted buddy-road-trip comedy about two best friends. The other is a hidden-camera film in which members of the public are drawn into absurd situations. The movie’s central experiment is to make those formats support each other rather than compete.
Andre and Howery play the friends at the center of the trip. Their journey supplies forward momentum, personal stakes and a reason to keep moving from one encounter to the next. The public-facing set pieces supply uncertainty: a performer can control the premise, but cannot completely control how an uninvolved person will respond. That tension is where much of the film’s electricity comes from.
The result is not a documentary about spontaneous public behavior. Netflix’s production account describes brainstorming, engineering, staging, filming, editing and reshooting. In other words, the movie is constructed with considerable planning even when the reactions it captures are presented as immediate. That distinction matters. The pleasure comes from watching a carefully designed comic machine meet unpredictable human responses, not from assuming every moment emerged without preparation.

Does the comedy land?
Serious faces in ridiculous situations
Andre has identified the film’s governing principle in a sentence that doubles as a useful review key: “The thing about comedy is the more serious you play a ridiculous situation, the funnier it is,” says Eric Andre. Bad Trip repeatedly commits to that idea. The performers do not wink at the camera to reassure the audience that the situation is harmless. They behave as though the outrageous premise is an ordinary problem that must be solved immediately.
That commitment creates a productive mismatch. The viewer can see the absurdity, while the people encountered in public are asked to process it without the safety of a conventional movie scene. Andre’s intensity pushes situations toward the extreme; Howery’s more grounded presence gives the audience an emotional foothold. Their contrast keeps the film from becoming a sequence of disconnected provocations.
Escalation instead of repetition
Hidden-camera comedy can become monotonous when every segment follows the same pattern: surprise a stranger, wait for a reaction, cut to the next surprise. Bad Trip has a built-in advantage because the road-trip narrative allows the filmmakers to vary scale and tone. A scene can begin as a character problem, become a public interruption and then return to the friendship at the center of the story.
The construction also lets the film edit around dead time. Netflix’s description of reshooting is revealing: the final sequence is not simply a raw record of whatever happened first. Timing, reaction shots and transitions can be shaped to create a comic rhythm. When that rhythm works, an uncomfortable pause becomes a punchline rather than evidence that a gag has stalled.

Raunch, cringe and the audience’s tolerance
The film is explicitly raunchy and raucous. Its humor depends on embarrassment, social rule-breaking and the sight of confident performers forcing impossible situations into public space. Viewers who enjoy cringe comedy may find the discomfort exhilarating; viewers who dislike watching strangers become unwilling participants may experience the same scenes as hostile or exhausting.

That divide is not a flaw the film can eliminate. It is the basic contract of the format. Bad Trip asks you to laugh at the gap between the performers’ certainty and everyone else’s confusion. If that gap makes you uneasy rather than amused, the movie’s brisk pace will not change your response.
The story and the cast
Andre and Howery’s central pairing
Andre supplies the film’s most aggressive comic energy, while Howery gives the journey a more recognizably human register. Their friendship is important because it turns the pranks into more than isolated stunts. The audience has a reason to care whether the pair reaches its destination and whether their relationship survives the chaos.
The chemistry is not based on both performers doing the same thing. Andre can push a premise past the point of social comfort; Howery can react as someone who understands how dangerous the situation has become. That difference creates a rhythm of attack and response. It also makes the movie accessible to viewers who might not normally choose an extreme hidden-camera comedy.

The supporting players
Tiffany Haddish and Michaela Conlin are also part of the principal cast. Their presence gives the scripted framework additional character texture, so the movie is not solely dependent on public reactions. The production’s official credits identify Dan Curry, Kitao Sakurai and Andre in the film’s creative and writing origins, indicating that the narrative spine was developed alongside the prank concepts rather than added as an afterthought.
Sakurai’s direction
Kitao Sakurai directed the film. His job is unusually complicated: he must preserve the clarity of a fictional road story while presenting public encounters that are, by design, difficult to predict. The direction succeeds when the viewer can understand the immediate comic objective, track the characters’ changing predicament and still feel the uncertainty of the people around them.

How the hidden-camera production shapes the experience
The official production feature describes a process running from “brainstorming, engineering and staging, through filming, editing and reshooting.” That wording explains why the movie often feels more elaborate than a collection of street pranks. Mechanical planning, controlled locations and repeatable setups make it possible to build comic escalation instead of relying on luck.
It also explains why authenticity should be discussed carefully. The available production account does not establish the consent procedures, legal releases or exact degree of spontaneity for any individual scene. Nor does it prove that every public reaction occurred in the same way. The fairest description is that Bad Trip is a scripted feature built around hidden-camera situations and real-time-looking public responses, shaped by substantial production work.
That qualification does not drain the comedy from the film. It changes what the audience is evaluating. The question is not whether the movie is an unfiltered social experiment. The question is whether the filmmakers have designed, performed and edited the situations well enough to create surprise, escalation and character payoff.
Pacing, runtime and visual presentation
Rotten Tomatoes lists an 84-minute runtime and a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The compact length suits the film’s structure. A longer running time could make the repetition of public-provocation scenes more obvious, while a much shorter film might not provide enough room for the friendship narrative to register.
The widescreen frame is useful for a comedy that depends on bodies, reactions and changing spatial relationships. Public scenes need room for the performers, bystanders and physical business to coexist in the same image. The visual format also helps the road-trip premise feel like a feature rather than a string of isolated clips.

Editing is particularly important here. A prank can be funny in person but flat on screen if the audience cannot identify the setup or understand why a reaction changes the situation. By combining planned story beats with selected public responses, the film can make each sequence legible without pretending that unpredictability has disappeared.

Netflix’s official listing labels Bad Trip TV-MA. Rotten Tomatoes’ reference entry lists an R rating for drug use, crude sexual content, pervasive language and some graphic nudity. Those labels come from different listings, so they should not be treated as interchangeable universal classifications.
For families, the practical answer is straightforward: this is not a children’s comedy. Expect frequent strong language, sexual material, drug-related humor and nudity, alongside public humiliation and aggressive physical comedy. Adults who are comfortable with raunchy, confrontational material are the intended audience.

- Hidden-camera comedy in which public reactions are central to the joke.
- Deadpan performances that treat outrageous situations as serious problems.
- Raunchy language, crude sexual humor and deliberately uncomfortable social encounters.

Approach with caution if you dislike

Is André’s comedy hilarious?
For the right viewer, yes. Bad Trip understands that a ridiculous premise becomes funnier when the performers refuse to acknowledge how ridiculous it is. The film’s strongest asset is the collision between Andre and Howery’s friendship, Sakurai’s controlled direction and the unpredictable presence of the public.

At 84 minutes, it does not overstay its welcome. If raunchy hidden-camera humor, deadpan commitment and escalating embarrassment sound like your kind of evening, Bad Trip is an easy recommendation. If you need a gentle comedy or a richly plotted road drama, its central comic contract will probably work against you.
