Bad Education (2019) Review: A Sharp, Uneasy Portrait of School-District Scandal

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Bad Education is worth watching for Hugh Jackman’s carefully controlled performance, Allison Janney’s morally complicated turn and a smart satire of status-driven institutions. Its weaknesses are real: the film can jump from Coens-like absurdity to grim drama, and its pace sometimes lurches from languid to breathless. Those shifts make it less smooth than its best scenes, but they do not erase the film’s insight or its performances.

Bernard Ozarowski’s review makes the central case well: “Bad Education is proof I was wrong” about Jackman as a film actor. Directed by Cory Finley and written by Mike Makowsky, the 2019 HBO Films production turns an $11 million embezzlement scheme into a character-led study of charm, vanity, institutional privilege and the stories communities tell about themselves.

What is Bad Education about?

The film follows Frank Tassone, the superintendent of a high-performing school district whose public image is built on competence, warmth and cultivated polish. He knows how to reassure parents, impress colleagues and present the district as a model of educational success. Behind that presentation sits a financial scheme that has diverted millions of dollars from the system he oversees.

Rather than begin with Tassone’s appointment or narrate every step of his ascent, Makowsky starts in the scheme’s final year. The people involved are already accustomed to expensive tastes and institutional respectability. That choice changes the story’s shape. The viewer is not watching a simple rise, crime and punishment sequence; the film is asking how an entire environment can normalize behavior that would look outrageous in isolation.

The investigative pressure comes through Rachel, a student reporter played by Geraldine Viswanathan. Her work gives the audience a practical route into the district’s accounts and contradictions, but the movie does not reduce her to a plot device. She is a capable scene partner for Jackman and Janney, and her presence keeps the consequences of the adults’ decisions visible from a student’s perspective.

Apple TV describes the story as an $11 million embezzlement scheme. That figure belongs to the film’s premise and official catalog framing; the movie’s interest lies less in turning the amount into a procedural puzzle than in showing how trust and reputation make the theft possible for so long.

Is it based on a true story?

Yes, in the qualified sense used by the film’s official materials. HBO says Bad Education is inspired by the 2004 events in Roslyn, New York, and Apple TV presents the movie as a story about an $11 million embezzlement scheme. The screenplay dramatizes those events, compresses timelines and shapes real-world figures into a narrative. It should therefore be read as a film inspired by a case, not as a complete historical record.

The distinction matters because the movie’s most pointed ideas concern social behavior rather than a ledger of verified facts. Its school district represents a community that prizes rankings, admissions results, property values and prestige. Those elements are part of the film’s dramatic argument. They should not be treated as a claim about the present-day condition of the real Roslyn district.

One line repeated in the film about the school’s national standing is dialogue spoken by Tassone, not an independently verified statistic. The same caution applies to any detail that appears as a character’s justification or a visual shorthand for success.

Hugh Jackman’s performance is the film’s main event

A public face built for reassurance

Jackman plays Tassone as someone who has made likability into professional equipment. His smiles, soft explanations and instinct for the right anecdote are not random charm; they are methods for managing a room. Parents want to believe in him, staff want to please him and the district wants the confidence that his persona projects.

Ozarowski’s review identifies the performance’s breakthrough in the way it lets charm and danger occupy the same frame. Tassone is not presented as a snarling villain waiting to be exposed. He is often gracious, attentive and apparently reasonable. The threat emerges when that composure is challenged. Anger and frustration surface as disruptions to a carefully maintained identity, not as his default mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mirrors as a visual shorthand

Repeated mirror moments give the performance a visual grammar. Tassone checks, adjusts and rehearses the face he will present to other people. The mirror is not merely a sign of vanity; it shows a man preparing to perform himself. Every public interaction requires a version of Frank that appears calm, competent and deserving of trust.

Those moments also explain why the film’s title reaches beyond the criminal act. Tassone’s education is “bad” not because he lacks polish, but because his sophistication has become a tool for concealment. He understands institutions, symbols and emotional cues well enough to make misconduct look like administration.

Why the role changes Jackman’s screen image

Jackman has often been associated with physical intensity, musical showmanship or openly heroic charisma. Here, the energy is compressed. Tassone’s power comes from restraint, eye contact and the ability to make another person feel heard. The performance asks the audience to recognize why people trust him before asking them to judge the betrayal of that trust.

That is the basis for Ozarowski’s line, “Bad Education is proof I was wrong.” It is not a claim that Jackman had never acted well; it is an acknowledgment that this role reveals a particularly precise film-acting instrument. The performance can pivot from affability to menace without announcing the turn, and the transition often happens in a small change of posture or expression.

Allison Janney gives the scandal a second center of gravity

Allison Janney plays Pam Gluckin, the deputy superintendent whose position places her close to Tassone and close to the district’s machinery. The character is not written as a simple accomplice or a convenient contrast to him. Her choices are compromised, but the film gives her enough force and specificity to make the institutional story feel larger than one mastermind.

Janney’s performance supplies a different kind of volatility from Jackman’s. Where Tassone works to preserve elegance, Gluckin can make the underlying appetite for comfort and recognition more visible. Her scenes expose how ordinary rationalizations accumulate: a benefit is treated as deserved, a boundary becomes negotiable, and the institution’s success is used to excuse the means by which it is maintained.

The partnership between Jackman and Janney is crucial because it keeps the film from becoming a single-actor showcase. Tassone’s public polish and Gluckin’s more openly unruly energy reveal two ways of participating in the same culture. Their relationship gives the scandal emotional friction even when the plot is moving through administrative details.

Geraldine Viswanathan makes the investigation personal

As Rachel, Viswanathan provides the film’s investigative line and one of its clearest moral perspectives. A student journalist is an inherently useful position in this story: she belongs to the community that benefits from the district’s reputation, yet she is not fully invested in protecting the adults who created it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The role could have been overwhelmed by two established stars, but Viswanathan holds her ground. Her scenes with Jackman and Janney have their own rhythm, and her curiosity is not treated as naïveté. Rachel’s reporting gives the film forward motion while preserving the sense that the adults’ behavior affects students who had no say in the bargain.

Alex Wolff, Ray Romano and Annaleigh Ashford round out the supporting cast named in Ozarowski’s review. Their contributions help establish the district as a social network rather than a two-person conspiracy. The surrounding characters carry the expectations, loyalties and blind spots that allow the central deception to function.

Mike Makowsky’s structure favors character over procedure

The screenplay’s smartest decision is its starting point. Because the film enters the story after the scheme has become part of the characters’ lifestyle, it can focus on behavior and self-justification instead of checking off the stages of a conventional crime narrative. The audience watches people protect a world they have already built.

Information arrives in layers. Each revelation changes the meaning of an earlier interaction without turning the movie into a puzzle-box exercise. That gradual exposure also makes the district’s public image part of the suspense. The question is not only how the money moved; it is how long a polished institution can keep calling itself healthy while its incentives reward concealment.

Makowsky’s approach shifts the film toward character drama. Administrative language, school publicity and financial explanations become forms of dialogue in which people negotiate status. The movie is most persuasive when it lets those conversations carry the tension instead of forcing every development into a thriller beat.

Cory Finley’s direction finds comedy inside institutional absurdity

Finley directs the film as a comedy-drama, and the comedy is often uncomfortable rather than comforting. Small rituals of prestige, elaborate displays of success and the insistence that everything is under control can look absurd when placed beside the damage being done. The humor exposes the gap between the district’s self-image and the reality the investigation uncovers.

The visual emphasis on performance extends beyond Tassone’s mirrors. Offices, public meetings and school spaces become stages on which authority is displayed. A room can feel reassuring because of its order and design even while the decisions made there are ethically chaotic. That contrast supports the film’s larger argument about appearances as a form of power.

Finley does not turn the movie into a purely stylized satire. The direction leaves room for embarrassment, fear and consequences, particularly as Rachel’s reporting makes the adults’ private arrangements harder to contain. The result is a film that wants its jokes to sting and its dramatic turns to remain grounded in recognizable social behavior.

The tonal shifts are the main weakness

Ozarowski’s reservations are formal rather than dismissive. The film can move from Coens-like absurd comedy to grim character drama within adjacent scenes. A moment built around the ridiculousness of institutional vanity may be followed by a confrontation whose emotional stakes are severe. Neither mode is inherently wrong, but the transitions are not always smooth.

Pacing has a similar unevenness. Some passages are languid, allowing the film to observe the district’s routines and the characters’ habits. Other scenes accelerate rapidly as the investigation closes in. The contrast can create urgency, but it can also make the movie feel as though it is changing gears without enough connective tissue.

These issues matter most for viewers expecting a tightly calibrated investigative thriller. Bad Education is more interested in how people inhabit a corrupt system than in delivering a mechanically precise chain of clues. If you accept that emphasis, the tonal instability becomes part of the film’s personality. If you want a single, consistent register, the shifts may be distracting.

What the film says about schools, status and “success”

Leaky ceilings and expensive symbols

The review’s strongest thematic reading treats the school district as an allegory. Practical needs such as leaky ceilings exist alongside expensive aesthetic projects and public-facing improvements. The contrast is not presented as a simple budgeting error. It shows how institutions can prioritize what photographs well, attracts admiration and protects a reputation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That argument is deliberately about the film’s constructed world. It is not a verified assessment of the real district today. Within the movie, however, the imbalance explains why the system is vulnerable. A community that measures success through visible markers can be persuaded that appearance is evidence of health.

Everyone benefits from the story

The district’s reputation carries value beyond the school buildings. Strong status can support admissions prospects, property values and a sense of communal identity. Families, officials and professionals may therefore have reasons to avoid asking questions, even when the answers would matter.

This is why the film resists presenting corruption as the work of one uniquely monstrous individual. Tassone bears responsibility for the scheme, but the surrounding culture supplies cover. People do not need to approve every act to benefit from the image those acts help sustain. The story’s moral unease comes from that shared investment.

Education as performance

Education in the film is also a language of performance. Rankings, polished presentations and reassuring statistics become ways to demonstrate competence. Tassone understands that language perfectly, which is why his eventual exposure feels like a collapse of a narrative as much as a financial scandal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The title points to this contradiction. The district is celebrated as an educational success, yet the adults in charge are teaching lessons about status, secrecy and accountability that no prospectus would advertise. The movie’s satire is sharpest when those lessons emerge through ordinary institutional habits.

How the student investigation changes the film

Rachel’s reporting keeps the story from remaining inside the administrators’ worldview. Her questions force the movie to translate polished explanations into evidence that can be examined. The investigation is not staged as a competition between a heroic outsider and cartoon villains; Rachel is part of the district and must navigate its assumptions while testing its claims.

That position gives the film a useful tension. The school’s success affects her directly, so uncovering the truth is not an abstract act of journalism. It means challenging the institution that is supposed to serve her. Viswanathan’s performance makes that conflict legible without turning Rachel into a speechmaking symbol.

Is Bad Education a procedural or a character study?

It uses the machinery of a procedural—documents, questions, money trails and escalating scrutiny—but its destination is psychological. The film wants to know why Tassone’s persona works, why colleagues accept explanations that should trouble them and why a community can defend an image after the facts begin to contradict it.

Viewers who prefer performance-led crime dramas will find the emphasis rewarding. Those seeking a dense forensic reconstruction may find the movie less exhaustive than the subject suggests. The difference is a matter of design, not an omission the film tries to hide.

How good is Hugh Jackman in it?

He is the clearest reason to watch. Jackman makes Tassone’s charm credible before making its cost visible. The performance does not rely on a single transformation scene; it accumulates through controlled smiles, polished explanations, mirror rehearsals and flashes of anger when the performance begins to fail.

The role also benefits from restraint. Tassone rarely announces what he wants, and Jackman allows the audience to notice the pressure underneath the courtesy. That tension gives the film its emotional engine and explains why Ozarowski treats the performance as a correction to his earlier opinion of Jackman’s film work.

Who should watch it?

Choose it if you want

  • A performance-led crime drama centered on a persuasive, compromised protagonist.
  • Satire about institutional prestige, rankings and the value communities attach to appearances.
  • A true-events-inspired story that treats the surrounding culture as seriously as the central crime.
  • Strong ensemble work from Janney, Viswanathan and the supporting cast alongside Jackman.

Approach with caution if you need

  • A consistently serious tone without abrupt comic detours.
  • A uniformly paced investigation with every transition tightly calibrated.
  • A documentary-level reconstruction of the real Roslyn case rather than a dramatized interpretation.

Final assessment

Bad Education succeeds because it understands that a scandal is also a performance. Frank Tassone’s public face, the district’s polished reputation and the community’s investment in success all depend on convincing other people that the story is true. Jackman gives that idea a human face, Janney supplies a volatile counterpoint and Viswanathan ensures that the investigation has its own authority.

The tonal lurches and uneven pacing keep the film from being perfectly controlled, but they are manageable flaws in a work with a clear thematic purpose. For viewers drawn to acting-led institutional dramas, Bad Education is a strong recommendation. Its best scenes leave you watching not only for the moment the scheme is exposed, but for the habits and incentives that allowed the performance to continue.
