Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell’s breakup seemed abrupt because, after about four years together and public talk of a shared future, James announced their split on Instagram on January 16, 2025—just hours after, Kirkconnell said, they had privately ended things in Tokyo. She attributed the breakup to a mismatch over marriage and said she saw his post shortly before a long flight home.
Why did Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell break up?
Kirkconnell said the relationship ended after conversations in Tokyo brought their different expectations about marriage into focus. In her January 2025 appearance on Call Her Daddy, she said James told her he did not feel ready to propose and did not know whether he could see himself marrying her. She said that conflicted with what she had understood from earlier conversations, including public comments, about engagement, marriage and children.
That is Kirkconnell’s account of their private discussion, not an independently verified explanation of James’s reasoning. She described the issue as one of compatibility, saying, as quoted by Bachelor Nation, “At the end of the day, there are things that we aren’t compatible with.”
Why was the breakup announcement surprising?
The contrast between their apparent shared plans and Kirkconnell’s account of the Tokyo conversation made the public news feel sudden. James posted an Instagram prayer announcing the end of the relationship on January 16, 2025, roughly four years after the couple reconciled. Kirkconnell said the post appeared a few hours after their private breakup, without advance notice to her. She saw it just before a long flight home.

She said James later acknowledged that posting without giving her a heads-up was not the right decision. Kirkconnell said she forgave him but felt disrespected by how the announcement was handled. She also asked listeners not to cast him as a villain; the coverage of her interview did not include a substantive response from James.

The earlier separation followed controversy over photos from Kirkconnell’s past that surfaced while the season was airing. ABC News reported that they had split by the March 2021 After the Final Rose special; James said in May 2021 that they were trying again. That history explains the couple’s on-and-off timeline, but Kirkconnell described marriage and compatibility—not that earlier controversy—as the reason for the 2025 breakup.
Did Matt James announce the breakup before telling Rachael?
According to Kirkconnell, yes: she said James published the Instagram announcement hours after they privately broke up in Tokyo, without first giving her a heads-up. She learned of it just before boarding a long flight home. This timing is based on her account of events.
