Google Cloud documents a no-charge category for VM-to-YouTube data transfer, which can matter for a continuous stream, but you still pay for the VM and other billable resources. Azure costs depend on the selected VM, operating system, runtime, storage, and bandwidth. Compare matched configurations in your chosen region rather than relying on a generic monthly price.
What matters most for a 24/7 stream
A cloud VM must run your encoder continuously and send its output to YouTube. The right choice depends on the workload and the full bill—not just a provider’s network ceiling or an hourly compute rate.
- Encoder workload: specify resolution, frame rate, encoder software, and target bitrate before sizing a VM. The official materials reviewed do not establish a tested minimum VM size for an unspecified stream.
- Network capacity: provider-published egress limits are ceilings, not guarantees of sustained encoder throughput or successful YouTube ingest.
- Full-month cost: include continuous compute runtime, operating system, attached disks, IP or other supporting resources, and applicable outbound transfer.
- Destination-specific billing: sending video to YouTube is not necessarily priced like sending the same traffic to another destination.
Azure VM vs Google Cloud VM
| Decision factor | Azure VM | Google Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic to YouTube | The reviewed Azure network source does not establish a YouTube-specific no-charge category. Estimate applicable bandwidth charges for your configuration and destination. | Google Cloud’s network pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. This applies to that specified traffic category, not to VM compute, all Google Cloud traffic, or other destinations. |
| VM network capacity | Microsoft says outbound throughput is allocated per VM across all NICs and destinations; all traffic leaving the VM counts toward that limit. | Google says maximum egress depends on the machine type and destination route. Its egress limit represents a maximum possible data rate, not a throughput promise. |
| Compute and operating system | Estimate the selected VM size and OS for the intended runtime. Microsoft identifies run time, storage, and bandwidth as cost components. | Estimate the selected machine type and runtime in the chosen region or zone. Google notes that prices vary by region and zone. |
| Storage and retained resources | Include disks and other resources. An OS disk retained after stopping a VM can continue to incur charges. | Include attached disks and other deployed resources in the estimate; the reviewed material does not establish a single cost for an unspecified setup. |
| Monthly-cost verdict | No universal price is established without a specific VM, OS, region, runtime, storage, and transfer estimate. | The YouTube transfer category may improve the network-cost comparison, but it does not establish that the overall VM setup is cheaper. |

How to choose and estimate the VM
- Define the stream. Write down the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and target bitrate. Include whether encoding happens on the VM or the video is already encoded for streaming; the workload affects sizing.
- Choose a region and operating system. Availability and pricing vary by region, zone, VM family, and OS. Select a location appropriate for your deployment and use the same assumptions when comparing providers.
- Select a candidate VM based on the encoder. Check the specific SKU’s CPU or other relevant resources and published outbound limit. Do not treat a provider’s maximum network figure as evidence that the VM will sustain a particular stream bitrate.
- Build a continuous-runtime estimate. Use the provider’s current calculator for the intended period, such as a full month, and include compute hours, OS licensing where applicable, disks, IP or other supporting resources, and outbound transfer.
- Apply the actual destination rule. For Google Cloud, check the current network-pricing category for VM-to-YouTube traffic; do not apply that rule to other destinations or use it to omit compute and disk costs. For Azure, estimate bandwidth for the selected configuration and destination.
- Test the complete path. Run the intended encoder and stream to YouTube using the chosen VM, region, and settings. Confirm sustained output and monitor YouTube’s ingest status before treating the deployment as suitable for continuous use.
Bandwidth ceilings are not streaming guarantees
Google documents the machine type and destination route as factors in maximum VM egress. Microsoft describes outbound throughput as a VM-level allocation shared across NICs and destinations. Other traffic from the same VM therefore matters, and operating conditions can affect results. These network documents describe limits; they do not establish the end-to-end bitrate a particular encoder will sustain or guarantee that YouTube will accept a stream continuously.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not choose an oversized machine solely because its published network ceiling is high. Match the VM to the encoder workload, then validate the actual stream. The official material reviewed does not provide an apples-to-apples Azure-versus-Google test of a 24/7 YouTube stream.
Cost traps to check before deployment
- Comparing unlike estimates: a short-run hourly compute figure is not a full-month always-on bill. Match region, VM family and size, OS, runtime, and resources.
- Assuming Google Cloud is free: the no-charge category is specifically VM-to-YouTube data transfer. It does not make the VM, disks, or every other resource free.
- Ignoring retained storage: stopping a VM does not necessarily stop charges for resources left attached; Microsoft specifically notes that a retained Azure OS disk can continue to cost money.
- Assuming one egress rate applies everywhere: Google Cloud outbound transfer rates depend on destination and Network Service Tier. Inbound transfer is free under the described tiers, but outbound charges vary; check the current pricing page for the actual route and tier.
- Using a network maximum as a bitrate target: a VM’s published limit is not proof of sustained encoder performance or YouTube ingest quality.
Troubleshooting a VM-based stream
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot maintain the target bitrate | Compare its workload with the chosen VM and check whether other traffic shares the VM’s outbound allocation. | Measure the actual stream, reduce workload or bitrate if appropriate, or test a better-matched VM. A published egress ceiling alone cannot diagnose sustained throughput. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable | Inspect encoder logs, VM resource use, network conditions, and YouTube ingest status. | Test the complete path with the intended software and destination; the provider network limit is not an end-to-end reliability guarantee. |
| The bill is higher than expected | Review VM runtime, OS, attached disks, IP and other supporting resources, and destination-specific data transfer. | Compare the actual deployed resources with the calculator estimate. Check whether a stopped VM still has billable resources, especially a retained Azure OS disk. |
| Google Cloud outbound cost does not match expectations | Confirm that traffic is VM-to-YouTube and check the current pricing category, destination, and Network Service Tier. | Do not extend the YouTube no-charge category to unrelated traffic; re-estimate any other destinations separately. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube, a VM is not the only option. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
