A YouTube live stream can use 720p output even when its source videos are 1080p. Set the encoder or playback workflow to scale the 1920×1080 footage to 1280×720, then send the live stream at that resolution. YouTube supports 720p live ingestion; the source file’s resolution does not force the outgoing stream to stay at 1080p.
Can I stream 720p from 1080p videos?
Yes. The source-video resolution and the encoder’s outgoing resolution are separate settings. A 1080p recording can be downscaled during playback or encoding, and the encoder can send 720p to YouTube. YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions lists 720p as a supported live ingest resolution.
For a 720p output, set the frame size to 1280×720 and make sure the workflow scales the original 1920×1080 video to fit. Exact setting names depend on the encoder or service you use, so check that its preview or status display confirms the outgoing dimensions rather than assuming the source file’s dimensions are being changed automatically.
Will YouTube downscale my live stream?
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats. As YouTube Help explains, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” That happens after your encoder sends its stream; it is distinct from scaling a 1080p source down to 720p before ingestion.

Sending 720p means the incoming stream has fewer pixels than 1080p. The visible result also depends on the codec, bitrate, frame rate, video content, and the size and quality of the viewer’s display. If 720p is chosen to reduce bandwidth demands or improve connection stability, confirm that the lower resolution still shows the detail your documentary footage needs.

YouTube’s encoder guidance provides these recommended bitrates for 720p. They are recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular image quality, and YouTube may update its settings; check the current table before configuring a stream.

The same YouTube guidance identifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options, recommends CBR bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. Apply the recommendation that matches the codec your encoder actually sends; the bitrate figures above are not interchangeable quality guarantees.
How to set up and check a 720p stream
- Choose the outgoing frame size. In your encoder or streaming workflow, set the output resolution to 1280×720. Use its scaling option to convert the 1920×1080 source footage to that output.
- Match frame rate and codec. Choose 30 or 60 fps as appropriate for the footage and workflow, and check the bitrate recommendation for the codec in YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- Check upload capacity. Your upload connection must sustain the outgoing bitrate reliably. Leave room for normal variation rather than setting a bitrate your connection can only reach under ideal conditions.
- Test before relying on the stream. Send a test stream, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm that the outgoing resolution and playback look right. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health.
What 720p does—and does not—tell you about a 24/7 stream
The 720p encoder setting answers the resolution question, not whether one uninterrupted broadcast will remain live indefinitely. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to an uninterrupted stream beyond 12 hours, including whether it remains live, restarts, or is archived in full. Do not treat 720p support as a guarantee of 24/7 continuity or archive handling.
