For a 24/7 prerecorded devotional stream, the server’s advertised rate is only one part of the cost: include compute, disk, outbound bandwidth, taxes and any monitoring or backup services, then check how you will detect and recover from a failed stream.

What you are comparing
An Azure VM and an Indian VPS are rented computing environments. You configure and maintain the software that sends your video to YouTube, and you remain responsible for checking stream health and responding to failures. Neither a server nor its location alone guarantees that a YouTube broadcast will stay live.
This is a comparison for a continuous channel using prerecorded devotional video. It is not a guide to broadcasting a live camera feed or producing a multi-source programme. YouTube also offers a managed continuous-stream category: its encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing establishes the workflow category, not its current price, suitability for a particular region or reliability.

Compare the full monthly cost, not the headline rate
No named Indian VPS plan in the available published evidence has a directly comparable, current set of terms for monthly price, included transfer, overage, resources and service commitment. That means an apples-to-apples provider price verdict cannot be made here. Ask shortlisted VPS providers for those terms before choosing; a low advertised rate does not show whether the plan can carry a continuous video stream economically.
Azure costs to include
Microsoft’s Azure Linux Virtual Machines pricing page says standard egress charges apply. It notes that some Marketplace Linux images can have separately billed publisher support, and that prices vary by region. Microsoft’s cost-planning guidance for virtual machines also explains that bandwidth is usage-charged and that an OS disk left behind after a VM is stopped can continue to incur charges.
Build the estimate from separate line items: VM size and running hours, operating-system or publisher charges if applicable, disk, public IP if needed, outbound transfer, tax, and optional backup or monitoring. A stopped VM is not necessarily a zero-cost VM if associated resources remain. Do not treat a new-account promotion or trial credit as the recurring operating price.

The Azure VM Cost Calculator India says its estimates sync weekly from Microsoft’s Retail Prices API, presents regional estimates in rupees, and excludes GST and account-specific discounts. Use it only as a convenience estimate; confirm the selected SKU, region, currency, billing assumptions and resulting charges in Azure Portal. Its estimate is not a provider quote.

Terms to obtain from an Indian VPS provider
- Monthly price and billing basis, plus applicable taxes.
- Included outbound transfer, how usage is counted, and the overage rate or throttling policy.
- CPU, memory, disk type and capacity, and whether a public IP is included or charged separately.
- Availability commitment, support hours, maintenance policy and any backup or monitoring charges.
- Cancellation and renewal terms, especially if an introductory rate changes later.
Compare these with Azure using the same stream settings, billing period and tax treatment. Without a current plan page that establishes equivalent terms, naming a “cheapest” or “best” Indian VPS would be misleading.
Estimate the stream’s outbound transfer
Transfer demand depends primarily on the stream’s total bitrate and how continuously it runs. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps and 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps; these are platform recommendations, not hosting transfer allowances or monthly prices. For a rough continuous-stream estimate, decimal gigabytes can be calculated as: bitrate in Mbps Ă— 0.0108 Ă— hours streamed. This assumes the stated bitrate is sustained and excludes protocol overhead, reconnects and any other server traffic.

These illustrations use a 30-day month. Your actual encoder may send a different total bitrate, and additional traffic or overhead can raise usage. Check whether a VPS counts outbound bytes differently, and leave room for variation rather than buying exactly the calculated amount.
Check outbound capacity and YouTube ingest
A provider’s transfer quota answers how much data may be sent over a billing period; its network capacity and route to YouTube ingest affect whether the stream can be sent steadily. They are different questions. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Test from the actual server and region you intend to use. Check stream health in YouTube Studio during a representative test, including at the bitrate and resolution you plan to run. An Indian server may be closer to the channel operator, but physical proximity alone does not establish a better route to YouTube ingest or better playback for viewers. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so origin-server location should not be confused with the viewer’s playback quality.

With either kind of server, the operator has to configure the encoder, protect the source media and stream key, apply security updates, monitor the process, and decide what happens after an interruption. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health; its guidance also suggests testing backup-encoder failover. A running VM is not the same thing as a healthy YouTube stream.
- Process recovery: Decide how the encoder is restarted if it exits, and verify that a restart actually reconnects to YouTube.
- Monitoring: Arrange an alert for a stopped process or unhealthy stream; a dashboard that is never checked will not help during an incident.
- Media resilience: Keep a recoverable copy of the video files and playlist configuration. Do not assume the server disk is a backup.
- Failover: If uninterrupted operation matters, test a backup encoder and the steps required to switch to it before relying on the arrangement.
- Security: Restrict access to the server and keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-control settings.
YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder covers creating and managing an encoder-based stream. Follow the current YouTube Studio flow for the channel and stream type you use; do not assume that server-side restarts eliminate the need to check stream health.

How to decide between Azure and an Indian VPS
- Set the stream target. Choose the resolution, frame rate and encoder settings you will actually use, then record the total video and audio bitrate.
- Estimate transfer. Multiply sustained Mbps by 0.0108 and by the intended streaming hours for a rough decimal-GB estimate. Add allowance for overhead and other traffic.
- Get written terms for the VPS. Confirm outbound transfer, overage or throttling, resources, disk, IP, tax and service commitment on the provider’s current plan page or quote.
- Build Azure’s complete estimate. Select a region, VM size, disk and billing period, then include egress, any applicable publisher charges, tax and optional services. Reconfirm the estimate against Azure’s current pricing information.
- Test the route and operational plan. Run a representative YouTube test from the intended region, check stream health, and rehearse process recovery or failover.
- Choose based on the actual trade-off. Prefer the option whose full recurring cost and documented transfer terms fit the stream, and whose monitoring and recovery responsibilities you can reliably handle.
