How to Schedule YouTube Playlist Changes with systemd Timers on Linux

Use a systemd timer to run a Linux script that adds, reorders, or removes YouTube playlist items through the OAuth-authorized Data API.

Use a systemd timer to decide when a Linux job runs, and a matching service to run a script that updates a YouTube playlist through the YouTube Data API. Playlist writes require OAuth authorization; an API key alone is not sufficient. The timer handles scheduling, not the playlist logic or credentials.

How the pieces fit together

A timer activates a systemd unit—usually a service with the same base name. The service runs your playlist-editing script. That script makes the appropriate YouTube Data API request to insert, update, or delete a playlist item.

Keep the scheduling and API work separate: you can test the script directly, then use systemd to run it on a calendar schedule. Run the service as the user who can access the required configuration and OAuth credentials.

Choose the right playlist operation

Add a video

Use playlistItems.insert. The request identifies the target playlist with snippet.playlistId and the video with snippet.resourceId. If you specify a position, the playlist must use manual ordering. Some special playlists, including the uploaded-videos playlist, do not support these operations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Move an existing video

First list the playlist items and retain the target playlist item’s id. Then use playlistItems.update, supplying the playlist and video resource details along with snippet.position. Positions are zero-based. When updating a resource, include the mutable values you intend to preserve in the selected parts: omitted values in those parts may be deleted.

Remove a video

Use playlistItems.delete with the playlist-item ID, not the video’s ID. The two identifiers are different. Google’s playlist implementation guide describes the workflow for listing and changing playlist items.

Authorize the script

Playlist changes require OAuth authorization. An API key by itself is not the documented authorization for insert, update, or delete writes. Follow Google’s YouTube API OAuth guide to authorize the application and arrange for the job to have usable credentials when it runs unattended.

Credential storage and token refresh depend on your application and host. Protect credentials from other local users, avoid printing tokens into logs, and test that the scheduled service—not just your interactive shell—can access and refresh them. The API documentation establishes the OAuth requirement but does not prescribe a particular Linux secret store or complete unattended refresh setup.

Create the service and timer

Use a matching base name for the service and timer. For example, these units schedule a script at 09:00 UTC each day. Replace the script path and user with values appropriate for your host.

Service unit

[Unit]
Description=Update a YouTube playlist

[Service]
Type=oneshot
User=YOUR_LINUX_USER
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/your/project
ExecStart=/path/to/your/project/update-playlist

Use an absolute path for ExecStart. Set WorkingDirectory if the script relies on relative paths. Define required environment variables explicitly in a protected configuration arrangement rather than assuming the service inherits your shell’s environment.

Timer unit

[Unit]
Description=Schedule a YouTube playlist update

[Timer]
OnCalendar=*-*-* 09:00:00 UTC
Persistent=true

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target

Save the units as update-playlist.service and update-playlist.timer in a systemd unit directory available to your user or system. A timer can explicitly name its activated unit with Unit=; if omitted, systemd derives a same-name service by removing the timer suffix.

Enable, inspect, and test the schedule

  1. Check the calendar expression. Use systemd-analyze calendar '*-*-* 09:00:00 UTC' to verify the expression and see the next elapse on a system that provides the command. Calendar syntax and available directives can vary by systemd release; check the installed systemd.timer(5) manual.
  2. Reload unit files. For system units, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload. For user units, run systemctl --user daemon-reload.
  3. Run the service directly. Use sudo systemctl start update-playlist.service for a system unit, or systemctl --user start update-playlist.service for a user unit. Confirm the script succeeds before relying on the timer.
  4. Enable and start the timer. Use sudo systemctl enable --now update-playlist.timer for a system timer, or systemctl --user enable --now update-playlist.timer for a user timer.
  5. Check its schedule and logs. Run systemctl list-timers update-playlist.timer (or add --user for a user timer). Inspect service output with journalctl -u update-playlist.service, or use journalctl --user -u update-playlist.service for a user service.

A user timer normally depends on that user manager being active. If the job must run while the user is logged out, check the host’s user-service configuration and whether lingering is enabled; availability and setup depend on the Linux distribution and administrator policy.

Choose calendar, catch-up, and ordering behavior

  • Wall-clock schedule: Use OnCalendar= for a time such as every day at 09:00. State the intended timezone explicitly when local-time changes would matter, and verify the expression on the target host.
  • Missed calendar event: Persistent=true causes a calendar timer to trigger after it becomes active again if at least one event was missed while it was inactive. It does not replay every missed occurrence.
  • Elapsed interval: If the requirement is “run after this much time passes” rather than “run at this clock time,” choose a monotonic timer directive and confirm its semantics in the installed manual.
  • Spread similar jobs: systemd offers randomized delay settings for timers. They can spread work across an interval, but add delay to the next determined elapse; consult the local manual before using them.
  • Playlist ordering: Insert at a chosen position only when the playlist uses manual ordering. Do not assume a position request will work with another ordering mode.

The current upstream systemd.timer manual documents timer triggers, persistent calendar behavior, and randomized delay. It is a moving document, and directives may not exist in older installed versions.

Make the job safe to run repeatedly

A timer can invoke a job again after a failure or a missed event, so the script should verify the current playlist state before changing it. Check that a video is not already present before inserting it; confirm an item still exists before moving or deleting it. These checks are implementation safeguards, not API guarantees.

Have the script check API responses and exit with a nonzero status on errors. That lets systemd record a failed service run instead of reporting a misleading success. Google’s insert and update method pages document a quota cost of 50 units per call; check the current method documentation and quota guidance before scheduling frequent changes.

Troubleshoot common failures

The timer is active, but the playlist does not change

Check systemctl list-timers and the service journal. Then start the service manually. A timer only activates the service; it does not verify that the script or API request is correct.

The script works in a terminal but fails under systemd

Set absolute executable and file paths, a valid WorkingDirectory, the intended User, and any required environment explicitly. A scheduled service may not inherit your interactive shell’s working directory, PATH, or environment.

YouTube rejects the write request

Verify OAuth authorization and that the credentials are available to the service at runtime. For insertion at a specified position, confirm manual ordering. For update and delete, confirm you are using the playlist-item ID where required, rather than substituting a video ID.

A move removes information you expected to keep

Review the selected part and include the mutable values you want to preserve in the update request. The update method warns that omitted existing values in selected parts may be deleted.

The job did not run while the machine was off

For a calendar timer, enable Persistent=true if one catch-up run after reactivation is appropriate. It does not restore a powered-off machine’s connection to YouTube or apply every missed change separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

A systemd timer is for changing playlist contents on a Linux host. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service costs $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
