Short answer: AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a complete, direct-to-YouTube 24/7 streaming solution. It packages and originates a live feed sent to it by an encoder; YouTube’s documented publishing workflow instead requires an encoder to send video to YouTube using its stream URL and key. MediaPackage may suit a broader AWS workflow involving other playback destinations, but for YouTube alone it adds components to configure and cost to account for. If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a more direct cloud option: it runs continuously without a computer at home and streams uploaded files at their original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
What MediaPackage does—and what it does not do
AWS describes Elemental MediaPackage as a just-in-time video packaging and origination service. In AWS’s documented live workflow, an upstream encoder such as MediaLive sends HLS content to a MediaPackage channel. MediaPackage packages the feed and makes it available through endpoints to downstream devices or content delivery networks (CDNs).
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is a different handoff: configure an encoder with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then send the feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The cited AWS and YouTube documentation does not establish MediaPackage itself as a direct RTMP(S) destination for YouTube, or show that a MediaPackage endpoint is interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest URL. See AWS Elemental MediaPackage documentation, AWS’s live processing flow, and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
That distinction is decisive for an always-on YouTube channel. MediaPackage may be one component in a larger system, but the documented role does not, by itself, solve the YouTube publishing step. Do not assume a path from MediaPackage to YouTube without verifying a separate bridge or output component and its current capabilities for the versions you plan to deploy.

Is MediaPackage a good fit for a 24/7 YouTube channel?
When it may make sense
MediaPackage is closer to the right tool when you need to package and originate live content for multiple playback destinations, deliver through a CDN, support alternate playback formats, or build time-shifted viewing or live-to-VOD workflows. Those are capabilities and use cases that fit its documented role; they still require the architecture and configuration to deliver them.
When it is likely more than you need
If the sole goal is to send one continuous feed to YouTube, first identify what MediaPackage contributes beyond a suitable encoder publishing directly to YouTube. You would still need an encoder or another verified component to produce and hand off the YouTube feed, and the total system may also involve monitoring, recovery, and delivery services. More components mean more configuration and costs to assess—not an automatic increase in reliability.

AWS’s live documentation describes an encoder sending HLS to MediaPackage, while YouTube’s guidance describes a stream URL and key configured in an encoder. These sources do not document a turnkey MediaPackage-to-YouTube 24/7 architecture. For any proposed bridge or failover design, verify the exact output path and operating behavior before deployment.
How the YouTube handoff and stream settings work
For the YouTube leg, YouTube’s encoder guidance says to use the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room and recommends RTMPS. Its settings guidance covers protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate. The correct bitrate depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload capacity available to the encoder; use YouTube’s current recommendations rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every channel.

- Get the destination details from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or configure the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder that will publish to YouTube. Keep the key private.
- Choose the encoder output. Set a supported protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. Confirm the encoder’s actual output is compatible with the chosen destination.
- Configure MediaPackage separately if it is part of the architecture. AWS’s live workflow has an encoder send HLS to a MediaPackage channel, which then serves content from an endpoint. That endpoint is not the YouTube stream URL. Establish and test the separate route that sends a feed to YouTube before relying on the combined design.
- Test and monitor the stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Check the live preview and health indicators before treating the setup as ready for continuous operation; a connected MediaPackage endpoint alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a valid feed.
YouTube also says to use RTMPS and, for higher-production-value events, recommends professional-grade hardware encoders. That is a conditional recommendation, not a requirement for every channel or a MediaPackage-specific requirement. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming tips.
MediaPackage limits relevant to continuous operation
AWS publishes separate limits for live manifests and time-shifted functions. Its current MediaPackage live quotas list a maximum live manifest length of 5 minutes, a maximum time-shifted content age of 336 hours (14 days), and a maximum time-shifted and live-to-VOD manifest length of 24 hours. The 5-minute live manifest limit is not a limit on how long a YouTube broadcast can run; these numbers describe different MediaPackage functions. Check the quotas for the deployed version and region before implementation. Source: AWS Elemental MediaPackage quotas.

MediaPackage live charges are based on the volume of video ingested into a channel and content originated and packaged. AWS recommends using a CDN such as CloudFront for more efficient delivery to viewers. Depending on the architecture, a full estimate may also need to account for the encoder and its output configuration, aggregate bitrate, any configured ingest redundancy, packaging and origination, viewer delivery, CDN caching, and other services.

There is no well-supported universal monthly total for an always-on YouTube channel in the material cited here. A useful estimate must specify the AWS region, bitrate and output profile, runtime, redundancy, expected viewer distribution, CDN cache assumptions, and applicable service rates. AWS reference-architecture figures are tied to their stated example configurations, not forecasts for this channel use case. Use the current MediaPackage pricing information and AWS Pricing Calculator for a deployment-specific estimate; don’t omit delivery or the other services in the pipeline.
Alternatives for keeping a YouTube channel live
Choose based on the function you actually need, rather than assuming a packaging service is a complete streaming workflow.
| Option | What it does for this use case | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the videos from the cloud. It is #1 for a straightforward prerecorded 24/7 YouTube stream because it runs without a home computer, streams at the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera or replace a production workflow for live camera input. See StreamNeo for service details. |
| Encoder publishing directly to YouTube | Matches YouTube’s documented workflow: an encoder sends a feed using YouTube’s stream URL and key, with RTMPS recommended. | Choose and operate an encoder, configure YouTube’s current output settings, and plan monitoring and recovery for continuous operation. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. |
| AWS MediaPackage in a larger pipeline | Packages and originates content supplied by an upstream encoder; can fit workflows that also need CDN delivery, other playback destinations, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD. | MediaPackage is not established in the cited documentation as a direct YouTube ingest destination. Verify the YouTube handoff separately and include the costs and operations for all pipeline components. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo avoids keeping a computer or home connection running: upload a video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops your uploads at the quality you made them, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
