Enable DigitalOcean Monitoring, confirm that the do-agent service is running, then open your Droplet’s Insights tab to view CPU, memory, and load-average graphs. Use those host metrics to spot resource pressure—not to prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Check YouTube’s own stream-health messages and confirm your outbound bandwidth can sustain the encoder bitrate.
Enable DigitalOcean Monitoring
DigitalOcean Monitoring is an opt-in service. New Droplets can have its agent enabled during creation; existing Droplets need the agent installed before memory and load-average graphs become available. DigitalOcean’s documentation, last verified October 1, 2026, describes Monitoring as free and the open-source do-agent as collecting CPU, memory, disk, and load-average metrics. See the DigitalOcean Monitoring quickstart.
For a new Droplet
During Droplet creation, select Improved Metrics and monitoring (Free). After creation, use the verification steps below to make sure the agent is active.
For an existing Droplet
- Open the Droplet’s Web Console in the DigitalOcean Control Panel, or connect through another shell with administrator privileges.
- Run DigitalOcean’s installation command:
curl -sSL https://repos.insights.digitalocean.com/install.sh | sudo bash
The command downloads and runs DigitalOcean’s installer with elevated privileges. Use it only when you intend to install the official agent.

Verify the agent and open the graphs
- Check the service state:
systemctl status do-agent
Look for Active: active (running). If the service is inactive or missing, review the installation output and service status before relying on the graphs.
- In the DigitalOcean Control Panel, open the Droplet and select Insights.
- Inspect CPU, memory, load average, disk, and bandwidth graphs over a period that includes both ordinary operation and the stream. Agent installation adds memory and load-average graphs and enables enhanced graphs and alerting; default Droplet graphs include public bandwidth and disk metrics. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet graphs guide.
The agent runs as an unprivileged user, reads system metrics from /proc, and makes outbound connections: port 80 to contact its metadata service for an authentication token and port 443 to send encrypted metrics. DigitalOcean says it does not open ports or interfere with existing services. See Monitoring features.

Interpret CPU and load average against your Droplet size
CPU utilization
DigitalOcean’s CPU graph reports total utilization across the Droplet, and its CPU alerts track total CPU rather than separating system time from user time. Some local utilities count 100% per CPU core; on a multi-vCPU server those tools may show more than 100%, while DigitalOcean’s aggregate view uses 100% as total capacity. Identify which view you are reading before comparing percentages. The official metric definitions are in DigitalOcean’s monitoring metrics documentation.
Load average
Load average counts processes running or waiting for CPU time; it is not normalized for the number of vCPUs. Compare it to your Droplet’s vCPU count. DigitalOcean’s example: a load average of 2 exceeds the capacity of a one-vCPU Droplet, but is half the available CPU capacity on a four-vCPU Droplet. A brief rise can be transient; the 15-minute average is more useful than a momentary 1- or 5-minute spike when judging sustained pressure.

Look for a pattern during representative streaming, not a single universal pass/fail percentage. Sustained load above the vCPU count suggests CPU pressure, but the graph alone does not tell you whether the encoder, another process, or a temporary task caused it.
Read memory usage without mistaking cache for a shortage
DigitalOcean calculates its memory-used measure from /proc/meminfo, subtracting free and cached memory from total. Linux uses available RAM for disk cache and can reclaim that cache when processes need memory. As a result, top or htop can appear to report more memory in use than DigitalOcean’s graph if the local tool counts cache differently.

Watch whether available or reclaimable memory stays low and whether the trend worsens during the stream. A high local “used” figure by itself is not proof that the Droplet is short of usable RAM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set alerts for workload-specific changes
DigitalOcean supports alert policies for CPU, load average, and memory, alongside categories including disk and bandwidth. Choose thresholds based on the Droplet’s normal workload, then observe whether alerts distinguish ordinary stream behavior from sustained pressure. DigitalOcean does not prescribe one threshold that is right for every Droplet. Its quickstart recommends setting resource alerts after agent installation.

Confirm stream health separately in YouTube
A healthy CPU or RAM graph does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages while live. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and streaming tips alongside the Droplet graphs.
Encoder and bandwidth checks
- YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, with up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Recommended ingestion bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s table recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Its corresponding AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube ingestion settings, not Droplet CPU or RAM sizing rules.
- YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom beyond the outgoing stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. Check the server’s outbound capacity and account for both primary and backup bitrate if you send both.
If YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream while host graphs look normal, investigate encoder configuration, the stream connection, and available outbound bandwidth rather than assuming more RAM will resolve it.
When the built-in graphs are not enough
do-agent provides host-level system metrics, not application-level performance monitoring. If you need application metrics, use separate APM tooling. DigitalOcean also says metrics cannot be exported directly from the agent; for custom visualizations, it suggests an external tool such as Grafana. See Monitoring limits (last verified July 13, 2026).
For most Droplet owners diagnosing CPU and RAM, start with the agent and Insights graphs. Add separate tooling only when you need application-level detail, export, or a custom dashboard beyond the built-in view.
