For an RTMP stream, copy the current server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then configure MediaLive’s RTMP destination URL and stream-name fields separately. YouTube’s HLS backup workflow is different: it provides a Backup server URL with the key embedded. Choose the matching protocol and do not paste an HLS backup URL into an RTMP destination.
First, identify which YouTube “backup” setup you mean
YouTube documents two distinct workflows that can be confused when someone asks for a “backup stream key.” The right MediaLive configuration depends on the protocol selected for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube’s encoder instructions and HLS instructions describe these as separate protocols and setups (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” and “Set up an HLS stream”). HLS uses segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP, according to YouTube’s HLS guidance. Neither protocol is universally preferable; use the one supported by your chosen stream and MediaLive output configuration.

Check the protocol shown for that stream. For the ordinary encoder setup, use the RTMP/RTMPS server information and its separate stream key. For YouTube’s HLS workflow, use the HLS stream URL and the Backup server URL if the workflow calls for backup ingestion.

Copy the values directly from the current stream’s settings. URLs and keys are account- and stream-specific; do not reuse an old value or share a key publicly. If YouTube changes or regenerates a key, update the corresponding MediaLive configuration.
The official setup instructions retrieved for this article do not identify a separate India-only URL or key format. For an Indian channel, use the values and protocol shown for that channel in Live Control Room; this does not establish anything about account eligibility, regional availability, or other requirements.

Configure MediaLive for YouTube RTMP or RTMPS

In AWS Elemental MediaLive, create or edit the channel and add an RTMP output group for the YouTube destination. The RTMP output group’s destination settings are where the YouTube server details belong.

In the RTMP destination URL field, enter the service-provided destination components: protocol, server address, port, and application path. Follow the current values shown by YouTube for the selected stream; do not substitute an HLS URL.

In the RTMP output’s stream name field, enter the YouTube stream key. In this workflow, the key is separate from the server/application destination URL. Keep it private.

Save the channel configuration and start the MediaLive channel when you are ready to test. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream status to confirm YouTube is receiving the intended stream before relying on it for an event.
A standard MediaLive channel uses two output destinations, while a single-pipeline channel uses one, according to AWS Elemental MediaLive’s “Fields for the output destination.” Those counts describe MediaLive’s AWS-side pipeline configuration. They do not prove that YouTube will interpret the second RTMP destination as its own backup-ingestion path.
If your YouTube stream uses HLS backup ingestion
Do not copy YouTube’s HLS Backup server URL into an RTMP destination field or enter it as though it were a second RTMP key. YouTube’s HLS instructions say to select HLS as the protocol and provide the Backup server URL; the key is already part of the HLS URL.

Confirm in Live Control Room that the selected stream is configured for HLS, and copy its current HLS stream URL and, if applicable, Backup server URL.

Use a MediaLive output capable of producing HLS and configure it against YouTube’s current HLS requirements. The documentation cited here does not establish the exact MediaLive console-field mapping for this particular YouTube HLS scenario, so verify the relevant fields against the current MediaLive HLS output documentation rather than guessing.

Test the configuration with the actual channel and inspect YouTube’s preview and status before the intended broadcast.

AWS pipeline redundancy and YouTube backup ingestion are different things: configuring more than one MediaLive destination does not, by itself, establish that YouTube has been configured to receive a backup feed.

For an RTMP connection drop, MediaLive exposes settings including cache length, cache-full behavior, restart delay, retry interval, and retry count (AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide, “Fields for the RTMP connection”). These controls govern MediaLive’s connection and retry behavior. They are useful to review when planning recovery, but they are not proof of automatic end-to-end failover to YouTube’s backup ingestion endpoint.
- Before a planned broadcast: verify that the channel is using the intended protocol, the destination and key are current, and YouTube shows a healthy incoming preview.
- If YouTube does not receive the stream: check the protocol first, then verify the server address, port, application path, and stream key against Live Control Room. For HLS, ensure you have not mixed its embedded-key URL with RTMP fields.
- If a connection drops: review MediaLive’s RTMP retry controls and check both MediaLive channel status and YouTube’s live status. A retry setting does not resolve an incorrect destination or guarantee YouTube-side backup acceptance.
