Awkwafina’s family ran a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. In Apple TV’s eight-episode food and travel docuseries, she sets out to explore that legacy and contemporary Asian American cuisine—even as she says, “I can’t cook. Like, at all.” The series, currently titled Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook, premieres globally on November 6, 2026.
What is Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook about?
The series follows Awkwafina, born Nora Lum, on a cross-country journey through food, family history and contemporary Asian American cuisine. Its starting point is Lum’s family restaurant, Lum’s, which Apple describes as an iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. The show’s premise connects her inexperience in the kitchen with an effort to learn more about the restaurant’s history and consider how its legacy might be reimagined today.
Apple first announced the program in November 2025 as The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina. Its current U.S. listing and October 2026 trailer announcement use Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook. The materials describe the same eight-episode series; the title change alone does not indicate a change in its premise. Apple’s original announcement and its trailer announcement outline the journey.
What does Awkwafina do in the series?
Lum stars in and executive produces the series. Apple says she takes a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America, travels to Texas for barbecue with actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang, and learns from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan. The journey also visits Hawai‘i, where she explores tiki culture that inspired her grandmother’s restaurant, and Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where she faces a restaurant challenge.
