Greenland Energy’s proposed oil test well in the Jameson Land area was pushed to the end of 2027, according to Fortune’s August 14, 2026 report, after permitting delays and a dispute over moving equipment. The project also drew local criticism over how the company described its rights and addressed community concerns. The documentary associated with Phil McGraw, known as Dr. Phil, was described as paused, with its future uncertain—not as released or definitively canceled.
Why was the Greenland oil project delayed?
Fortune reported on August 14, 2026, that Greenland Energy’s first test well had been postponed until the end of 2027. The report attributed the delay to permitting slowdowns and a dispute concerning the movement of equipment. Robert Price, the company executive, said Greenland Energy remained committed to the project and told Fortune, “There’s a lot of time now to make sure that we get it right.”
That date is a reported target as of August 14, not a confirmed schedule for any later period. The available reporting does not establish whether subsequent approvals or logistical changes altered it.
What rights does Greenland Energy have?
The company does not own Jameson Land. After describing the area as owned by Greenland Energy, Price told Greenlandic broadcaster KNR on June 30, 2026: “We do not own the area. We have a license to explore for oil.” He apologized for using the word “ownership.” KNR had reported that Greenlandic law does not permit private ownership of land and that the company held exploration and exploitation permissions.

However, the scope and status of permissions for particular activities were disputed. The Guardian reported on July 9, 2026, that Greenland’s resources ministry said there were “no actually active permissions for any exploration activity or permissions for preparations for these activities.” The Guardian also reported that some older licenses covering Jameson Land remained valid after Greenland stopped issuing new exploration licenses in 2021. These accounts distinguish holding a license from having approval for every preparatory or drilling activity.
Has oil been found, and what does the 13-billion-barrel figure mean?
No commercial oil discovery is established in the cited reporting. Price told KNR that drilling would be needed to determine whether the area contains commercially viable quantities. The much-repeated 13-billion-barrel figure is a low-probability resource estimate, not a proven reserve or a discovery.

What concerns did residents raise?
Danwatch reported that residents at a public meeting in Ittoqqortoormiit asked about spill response, outstanding permits, and what would happen if oil were found. At the time of that reporting, the company had not received government approval for drilling, and information about spill response remained among the outstanding issues.
Those questions matter independently of the resource estimates: even if exploration identifies oil, a discovery would not itself settle whether production is approved, economically viable, or acceptable to affected communities. At the meeting, one resident’s question was recorded as “Men hvis I finder olie, hvad så?”—“But if you find oil, what then?”

What happened to the Dr. Phil documentary?
KNR reported on July 7, 2026, that Phil McGraw would not visit Ittoqqortoormiit that year. The planned six-part series, titled Arctic Wildcatters, was expected to follow the company’s search for oil, but KNR said its future was unclear. Fortune later characterized the documentary as paused and its prospects as uncertain. The reporting does not establish that the series was released or permanently canceled.

- Exploration rights are not land ownership. Price corrected his earlier wording and described the company’s right as a license to explore.
- A resource estimate is not a reserve. The 13-billion-barrel figure is the 10%-probability high estimate cited by KNR from a 2022 assessment.
- A license does not resolve every permit question. The company’s account and the resources ministry’s reported position differ over which preparatory activities were authorized.
- A target date is not proof that work can proceed. Fortune’s end-of-2027 date reflected the schedule reported on August 14, 2026, amid permitting and equipment-movement issues.
The project’s immediate story is therefore a delayed exploration effort under regulatory and community scrutiny—not a confirmed oil find, a transfer of land ownership, or a documentary with a settled release outcome.
