In Always Lalisa, Lisa Manobal speaks on camera about leaked rehearsal clips from Blackpink’s trainee years that reportedly included uncensored racial slurs in rap lyrics. Lisa says she was a teenager who did not understand the word’s history at the time, recognizes that she did wrong, and would not use it now. BBC reporting identifies Sue Kim as the film’s director and gives October 12, 2026, as its planned cinema release date; current screenings and later distribution are not confirmed.
What Lisa says about the clips
BBC music correspondent Mark Savage reported that leaked rehearsal footage showed Blackpink members covering US rap songs as teenage trainees, with racial slurs left uncensored. The report does not independently authenticate the clips or establish their full provenance, so their description should be understood as reported rather than independently verified.
According to the BBC report, Lisa discussed the clips with director Sue Kim in the documentary. Lisa said she was around 15 or 16, came from Thailand, and did not have English as her first language. She said she did not then understand the word’s history, would not use it now, and acknowledged, “But I did wrong.” Those are statements as reported from the film, not independent verification of what happened in the footage.
How the controversy developed
The BBC report says the clips became a controversy as Lisa prepared for a 2025 Coachella performance, and that some fans called for an apology. The report describes the public response but does not establish its full scale or represent every fan’s view.

What the documentary’s access does—and does not—show
Kim told the BBC she had expected Lisa to decline to speak candidly about the controversy. Describing the interview, Kim said, “I asked her one question and she just talked for an hour, and everything came out, and it’s all stream of consciousness.” Kim also said Lisa did not ask her to remove a scene when she saw the film: “And when I showed her the film, she never asked me to remove a single scene. That’s exceptional.” These are Kim’s accounts, quoted in Savage’s report.

The film was commissioned by Sony Music’s film division, according to the BBC. That context matters when considering how a documentary about an artist’s career is framed. Kim’s account of the interview and Lisa’s reported response to seeing the film do not establish who had final editorial control or whether Lisa had approval rights.
