Marvel Studios’ current official listing confirms 30 actors for Avengers: Doomsday, including returning Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Fox-era X-Men characters, and members of the Thunderbolts. Robert Downey Jr. is also confirmed—but not as Tony Stark. He will play Victor von Doom, the film’s Doctor Doom.
The film is currently scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026. That replaces the older May 1, 2026 date cited in the original cast announcement.

Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom
The most consequential casting detail is Downey Jr.’s role. He is confirmed as Victor von Doom, rather than a version of Tony Stark or Iron Man. Marvel has therefore placed the actor most closely associated with the original MCU’s central hero in the role of one of its major comic-book villains.

The official listing does not establish how Doctor Doom is connected to the wider multiverse, nor does it confirm whether the character resembles Tony Stark in-universe. Those questions remain part of the film’s undisclosed story.
Which groups are represented?
The cast announcement brings several Marvel corners together in one film:
- The Avengers: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu and others return as heroes linked to the MCU’s main super-team. Chris Evans is listed as Steve Rogers/Captain America, alongside Mackie’s current Captain America, Sam Wilson.
- The Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn are confirmed as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm.
- The X-Men: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn return to roles associated with the earlier X-Men films.
- The Thunderbolts: Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman and Hannah John-Kamen are all listed in characters connected with Marvel’s antihero team.
- Wakanda and Talokan: Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta Mejía and Mabel Cadena represent two major MCU nations and their heroes.
Marvel’s promotional material has also identified Doctor Doom, Steve Rogers, Thor, Cassie Lang, Cyclops, Mystique, Gambit, the Fantastic Four and members of the Avengers and Thunderbolts. Promotional images can reveal returning characters, but they do not necessarily explain how each character fits into the plot.
Why the cast list changed after the 2025 announcement
Marvel’s original announcement on March 26, 2025 named 27 actors, with Downey Jr.’s casting having been announced separately. That initial announcement included Hemsworth, Kirby, Mackie, Stan, Wright, Rudd, Russell, Huerta Mejía, Moss-Bachrach, Liu, Pugh, Grammer, Pullman, Ramirez, Quinn, Harbour, Duke, John-Kamen, Hiddleston, Stewart, McKellen, Cumming, Romijn, Marsden, Tatum and Pascal.

The current Disney listing contains three additional names:
- Chris Evans, returning as Steve Rogers/Captain America.
- Kathryn Newton, returning as Cassie Lang.
- Mabel Cadena, returning as Namora.
Evans’ return was subsequently shown in promotional footage, while Newton’s involvement was revealed through later marketing. The official movie page is the more up-to-date reference for the confirmed cast.
Actors not officially confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday
A large ensemble does not mean every rumored Marvel character is part of the confirmed lineup. The official Disney listing does not currently name:
- Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
- Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool
- Tom Holland as Spider-Man
- Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
- Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch
- Brie Larson as Captain Marvel
- Chris Pratt as Star-Lord
Their absence is not proof that they cannot appear in the finished film. Marvel could add cast members later, and an unlisted cameo could theoretically remain secret. For now, however, rumors, leaks and fan speculation should not be presented as official confirmations.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on December 18, 2026, according to Disney’s current film page. Earlier reports used May 1, 2026, but that date is outdated and should not be used as the film’s current release date.
The confirmed cast gives the film an unusually broad spread of Marvel characters, but it reveals little about the plot. Until Marvel publishes further story details, the safest guide is the official cast listing—not unverified reports about additional cameos.
