Avatar is James Cameron’s 2009 science-fiction adventure, set on Pandora in 2154. It follows Jake Sully, a former Marine who enters the moon’s environment through a remotely controlled biological body and becomes caught between a human extraction project and the Na’vi. The story continued in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025).
What is Avatar about?
In 2154, former Marine Jake Sully is recruited for a mission on Pandora, a distant moon where a corporate consortium is mining a rare mineral. Pandora’s air is not survivable for humans, so Jake operates a remotely controlled biological body—an avatar—that can move through the moon’s environment. After Na’vi Neytiri saves him, Jake becomes drawn to Na’vi ways and is caught in the conflict over Pandora’s future.
That is the central setup in 20th Century Studios’ synopsis. It frames the film’s action around Jake’s mission, his relationship with the Na’vi, and the competing interests surrounding extraction on Pandora.
