What is Ava DuVernay’s 14th about?
14th is a documentary about the Fourteenth Amendment and the ongoing conflicts over its principles. Film at Lincoln Center describes it as a follow-up “of sorts” to DuVernay’s 2016 documentary 13th, examining attacks on the amendment’s tenets. It selected 14th as the Closing Night film of the 64th New York Film Festival.
The amendment, ratified in 1868, includes the Citizenship Clause, which states that people born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens of the country and the state where they reside. The Associated Press reported that the amendment nullified Dred Scott v. Sandford, which had denied citizenship to people descended from enslaved people. DuVernay summarized the distinction between the documentaries this way: “If ‘13th’ asked who gets caged, then ‘14th’ asks who gets counted.”
DuVernay and editor-producer Spencer Averick have framed the film as a history of conflict over the amendment, including backlash after the Civil War and later cultural and legislative disputes. Averick identified the “Lost Cause” narrative as an important thread in that history; that is the filmmakers’ interpretation of the story, not a neutral description of constitutional doctrine.

How the filmmakers approached the story
In an interview with Relocation Observer, the filmmakers said they sought interviews with more than 300 Republican elected officials. They named Sen. Jeff Flake and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna among those who participated. DuVernay said the team wanted people who could explain information accessibly and engagingly. The figure describes the production team’s interview outreach, not a general measure of political participation.
The filmmakers have also linked Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow to the thinking behind 13th. That connection offers context for DuVernay’s earlier film; it does not establish that the book was a direct source for 14th.

What did DuVernay say about Hollywood?
In her interview with Starr Bowenbank for ELLE, published October 8, 2026, DuVernay said, “Hollywood is tough for everybody right now. A lot of industry people are not receiving the support we usually have gotten, and when you add gender and race into that, it’s exacerbated.” This is her account of the conditions she sees, not an independently measured industry statistic.
She also emphasized that her ability to continue making work does not depend on studios or networks hiring her. “It doesn’t matter at this moment if a studio never hires me again or anything. We continue. Nothing’s gonna stop this, except me,” she told ELLE. Her remarks point to determination and a commitment to independent work—not a verified declaration that Hollywood has ended.

How did DuVernay build an independent filmmaking career?
According to ELLE, DuVernay began making projects while working in public relations and continued making films alongside her job for her first three films. After winning Best Director at Sundance for Middle of Nowhere, she said she sold her company and became an independent filmmaker. She described making her own work as important whether or not studios and networks were paying attention.
Her advice to emerging filmmakers
DuVernay told aspiring filmmakers to focus on the parts of a career they can build themselves: “Get into your art. Build your audience. That’s really what I’d focus on, because the rest you can’t control.” She likened industry recognition to a bonus rather than the substance of a career: “Think of them as a cherry on top, but you’re the ice cream. You’re the main event, and your work is what matters.”

Where can you watch 14th?
ELLE reported that the film would premiere at the New York Film Festival and arrive on Netflix on December 4, 2026. That date is a reported release plan, not confirmation of current availability in every country. Check Netflix in your territory for the latest listing. A festival screening and a streaming release are separate viewing opportunities, with festival access dependent on the event’s schedule and ticket availability.
