NAZA Passes $500,000 at the U.S. and Canadian Box Office Amid Backlash

As of October 11, 2026, the documentary NAZA had grossed $504,074 in the U.S. and Canada, according to TheWrap. The film reached North American theaters without a conventional U.S. distributor, but that does not mean it is undistributed worldwide: Italian coverage names I Wonder Pictures as its distributor there. Reports also describe protests and threats in Israel, but do not establish that those events caused the North American box-office result.

What the $500,000 figure covers

TheWrap reported a cumulative U.S./Canada gross of $504,074 on October 11, 2026. That total included $298,240 from the reported expansion weekend, when the film played in 85 theaters across 30 cities. These are dated North American figures, not a final worldwide total; box-office totals can change as the run continues.

The release drew audiences through theater promotion, press coverage around the Venice festival, and word of mouth, TheWrap reported. The Guardian’s coverage was also cited as helping viewers discover the film. The available reporting does not identify a conventional distributor for its U.S. release.

North America and Italy are separate release stories

Market Reported gross and date Release context
U.S. and Canada $504,074 cumulative gross as reported October 11, 2026; $298,240 for the reported expansion weekend 85 theaters in 30 cities for that expansion weekend; TheWrap described the film as having no distributor in this release context
Italy €451,872 on opening day, rising to about €1.1 million by Tuesday, according to The Guardian’s report published September 30 and updated October 1, 2026 The Guardian identified I Wonder Pictures as the Italian distributor

The territories and currencies should not be conflated: the North American total is in U.S. dollars, while the Italian figures are in euros and refer to Italy. Together, the reports show that “without a distributor” is not a worldwide description of the film’s release.

What NAZA is about

NAZA is an 80-minute investigative documentary directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor and produced by The Guardian. The film was included in the Venice festival’s main competition and received the festival’s Special Jury Prize, according to The Guardian and the Associated Press.

The Guardian reports that the documentary draws on interviews with 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence officers whose identities are anonymized. The film presents their accounts as testimony about military systems and conduct in Gaza. Anonymity is relevant context for assessing the material: the interviewees are not publicly identified in the reporting, and their statements should be presented as testimony rather than as independently established findings.

What the IDF disputes

The documentary’s allegations are contested. In a written response reproduced by the response site, the IDF rejected a key claim concerning a strike and the number of civilian deaths its planners allegedly expected. Its statement said: “The IDF has never planned, approved or carried out a strike in Gaza in which 500 civilians, or anything close to that number, were expected to be killed.” The IDF’s statement is a denial of that specific allegation; the reporting cited here does not independently establish which account is correct.

That denial should not be broadened into a claim that the IDF says no civilians were harmed. The quoted response addresses whether a strike was planned, approved or carried out with 500—or anything close to 500—civilian deaths expected. It does not, in that wording, claim that no civilians were harmed in Gaza.

At a post-screening question-and-answer session reported by The Guardian, Szor said, “Our country is doing so much to hide these systems,” while Abraham said, “These crimes that you saw are ongoing. They’re ongoing because it’s what our country is doing, and because of what your country is supporting and funding.” These are the filmmakers’ statements, not independent adjudications of the documentary’s claims.

What is known about the backlash—and what is not

TheWrap reported threats against the filmmakers and a support letter signed by Israeli filmmakers. The Week reported protests outside a filmmaker’s parent’s home and calls by politicians to revoke citizenship. Those reports describe backlash in Israel; they do not establish that protests took place at U.S. cinemas.

Although the release and backlash are both part of the film’s story, the coverage cited here does not show that protest activity produced the North American gross or caused a particular increase in ticket sales. The box-office figure and the reported backlash should therefore be understood as concurrent events, not a demonstrated cause-and-effect relationship.

Where to watch

The Guardian reported that NAZA was opening in New York and expanding across the U.S. from October 9, 2026, with a free online release planned for mid-November 2026. Because those dates describe a schedule reported before the planned online release, check current theater listings and The Guardian’s current availability information rather than assuming a screening or online stream is still upcoming—or already available.

A response page is also described under the title “Naza: The Real Story.” The material available here identifies it as a place reproducing the IDF’s written response; it does not establish that a separate counter-documentary with that title exists.
