Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage’s Australian Bush Pubs 3/e: A Celebration of Outback Australia’s Iconic Watering Holes is an illustrated journey through the stories, photographs and changing fortunes of regional pubs—not a live directory of places guaranteed to be open. The third edition’s 256 pages introduce new pubs and update stories and photographs of familiar ones. For readers drawn to the history as much as the road trip, a 2023 review offers a cross-country route through six of its featured watering holes.

What is in Australian Bush Pubs 3/e?

Published by Woodslane Press under its Boiling Billy imprint, the hardcover book was released on October 5, 2023. Its ISBN is 9781922800459. The publisher describes it as a visual pub crawl through outback Australia, bringing together establishment histories, unusual stories and full-color photography. It says the third edition adds a handful of pubs and updates many stories and photographs of old favourites. The publisher also mentions Birdsville Hotel and Silverton Hotel, alongside tales of unusual happenings, famous patrons and ghosts. See the publisher’s book details.

A December 2023 PerthNow review calls the book “partly a history book, partly travel guide and partly photographic journey to some of our best-loved bush watering holes.” The review is useful as a reading route through the book, but its venue descriptions are historical reporting, not confirmation of current opening hours or visitor services. Read the PerthNow review.

A six-stop route through the review’s featured pubs

The stops below span Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Their dates and amenity descriptions are as reported by PerthNow in December 2023; they should not be read as verified present-day conditions.

Stop Historical detail reported in the review Character or features reported
Ironclad Hotel, Marble Bar, Western Australia The review dates the corrugated-iron hotel to 1892. Its possible connection to the Ironclad Lease is unconfirmed. The Marble Bar Hotel, another establishment, closed in 1915. Two bars, a pool room and beer garden.
Adelaide River Inn, Northern Territory The review says it was built in 1874. Military memorabilia, Bar 303, Digger’s Bistro, taxidermied buffalo Charlie and Jock the Croc; the Railway Heritage Precinct is nearby, and the Ghan crosses the Adelaide River Bridge.
Adavale Pub, Queensland The review says Patrick Kennedy built it as a general store in 1958. It links the town’s decline to a railway bypass and flooding in 1963. A timber-framed, weatherboard building with a front bar, pool table and verandah.
Albert Hotel, Milparinka, New South Wales The review dates its sandstone construction to 1882–1890 and says it became licensed in 1897. A front bar, courtyard and guest rooms.
Kevington Hotel, Victoria The review says it began in 1862 as Garrett’s Beer House. Described as popular with tourists, campers, fishers and 4WD enthusiasts, with guest rooms and a riverside beer garden.
William Creek Hotel, South Australia The review dates the building to 1887 and says it became licensed in 1935. A front bar, pool room and dining room. The review calls it the only corrugated-iron hotel left in South Australia; that superlative is the review’s claim.

All six venue accounts in the table come from the December 2023 PerthNow article. The dates and facilities help convey the book’s historical and visual appeal, but they are not a substitute for checking a venue before travelling.

Why bush pubs rise and fade with their towns

The review connects pub fortunes to wider changes in regional economies and transport. Gold rushes could bring a rapid influx of residents and public houses; coach networks and railways shaped which towns remained on travel routes and which were bypassed. The Adavale account, for example, connects its decline with the railway passing elsewhere and the 1963 flood.

Ravenswood in Queensland illustrates the scale such change could take in one mining town. According to PerthNow, it had 4,500 residents and 40 public houses at the gold-rush peak, but was “virtually deserted” by 1917. The review says two pubs remain today and identifies the Imperial, dating from 1902, as one featured in the book. These figures describe Ravenswood as reported by that article; they should not be generalized to every bush town.

Lewis and Savage write that “Australia’s bush pubs are an integral part of our social fabric.” In the book’s framing, a pub is more than a stop for a drink: its setting, local stories and survival or decline can record the economic and transport history around it.

How to use the book to plan a real trip

Treat the book as inspiration and context, then verify the practical details independently. The historic descriptions and the 2023 review do not establish that any named venue is currently open, that its facilities remain unchanged, or that rooms are available.

  1. Choose a region and route. The six stops above are spread across six states and territories, so they are not a single short crawl. Build an itinerary around distance and your wider travel plans rather than assuming they are close together.
  2. Contact each venue directly before setting out. Confirm whether it is operating, its current opening hours, whether food or accommodation is available, and whether advance booking is needed. Do not rely on the review’s historical references to guest rooms, bars or dining.
  3. Check access and conditions for your travel dates. Confirm road access and any local visitor requirements with the venue or relevant local authority, especially before travelling to a remote stop. The available book and review details do not verify current road or access conditions.
  4. Use the book for the story, not live logistics. Its photographs and historical accounts can add context to a visit, but current operating information should come from the pub itself.
