Audubon’s Guide to Migration Hot Spots: Six Historic Fall Birding Destinations

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audubon’s Guide to Migration Hot Spots is a historical field guide, not a current travel timetable. The original pullout appeared in Audubon magazine on September 2, 2009, with bird guide author and Audubon field editor Kenn Kaufman selecting places where weather, geography and habitat can concentrate migrants. A 2010 Audubon article excerpted the six destinations: Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Cape May, Great Salt Lake, Monterey Bay, Izembek Lagoon and Hawk Ridge.

Those places still illustrate the main ways migration becomes visible: raptors and seabirds can pass overhead or offshore, while songbirds, shorebirds and waterfowl may gather in stopover habitat. Use the historical descriptions below to understand what makes each site notable, then check the managing agency’s current visitor information before planning a trip. Access rules, facilities, closures and seasonal programs are not established by the 2009–2010 articles.

What the Audubon guide actually is

The title refers to a special magazine pullout published in September 2009. It was written as an invitation to experience fall migration, with Kaufman identifying selected locations rather than promising a complete list of the continent’s best sites. Audubon’s 2010 follow-up, “Top Migration Hot Spots,” reproduced the six selections from that pullout.

Because the material is more than a decade old, its value is primarily interpretive. It shows how to recognize a migration concentration point and what kinds of birds might be associated with each landscape. It does not establish present-day opening hours, entrance fees, road conditions, viewing platforms, guide schedules or a reliable forecast for any particular autumn.

The original guide closes with the encouragement to “Dust off your binoculars, and get outside to try for a glimpse into one of the most remarkable phenomena in all of nature.” That sentence is an unattributed line from the article, not a quotation assigned to Kaufman.

Why some places become migration hot spots

Most birds do not travel through a single, narrow corridor. The guide explains that many species move across a broad front, so a person standing at one location may see only a fraction of the overall movement. A hot spot forms where several influences overlap.

  • Weather: Wind direction, storms and changes in temperature can push birds toward a particular shoreline, ridge or island, or force them to pause.
  • Habitat: A patch of woodland, wetland, mudflat, beach or freshwater marsh can provide food and shelter during a long journey.
  • Flight patterns: Some birds naturally follow coastlines, mountain edges or lake shores. Others use open water crossings that make a staging point especially important.
  • Local and regional geography: Peninsulas, exposed ridges, lagoons and large inland lakes can funnel movement or create a visible vantage point.

These mechanisms produce two different kinds of birding experience. At a visible migration lookout, observers watch birds pass overhead or offshore, often identifying them by silhouette, flight style and timing. At a stopover, the birds may be feeding or resting in vegetation and shallow water. Stopover activity can be difficult to see because it happens at night, high above eye level or inside dense cover.

The six destinations at a glance

Destination State or region Landscape highlighted Migration groups emphasized Historical seasonal examples
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park Florida Coastal park at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula Landbirds arriving from the Bahamas or Cuba Fall movements associated with Caribbean strays
Cape May New Jersey Coastal peninsula, marshes and varied stopover habitat Songbirds, shorebirds and other migrant groups Songbird activity in September; additional movements in October and November
Great Salt Lake, including Bear River Refuge Utah Inland lake shore, marsh and refuge habitat Shorebirds, waterfowl and swans Shorebirds in late summer; waterfowl and swans later in fall
Monterey Bay California Open Pacific coast and offshore waters Seabirds Fall passage involving birds from the Southern Ocean and the Arctic
Izembek Lagoon Alaska Coastal lagoon and staging habitat Waterfowl and shorebirds Pre-departure staging before long flights over open water
Hawk Ridge Minnesota Elevated ridge overlooking Duluth and Lake Superior Raptors Different species peak at different points in autumn

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Florida

The guide places this park at the southern end of the Florida peninsula, where coastal geography brings it into contact with birds that have crossed from the Bahamas or Cuba. The attraction is not a guaranteed spectacle on every visit; it is the possibility of encountering a landbird that has been diverted from its usual route or has reached Florida after a Caribbean crossing.

For a birder, that means scanning vegetation as well as open sky. Migrants may use trees and shrubs for cover and food after arriving over water. A quiet walk through the park can therefore be as important as looking for a visible stream of birds overhead.

The historical account does not provide current park hours, entrance charges, trail conditions or a month-by-month forecast. Confirm those details with the park manager, and check for weather or storm-related changes before setting out. The 2009 description should be treated as an explanation of the location’s geographic potential rather than a promise that unusual Caribbean visitors will be present.

Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is presented as a place where several migrant groups encounter a peninsula’s combination of shoreline, wetlands, woodland and other stopover habitat. Its importance in the guide comes from variety: different birds use different parts of the landscape, and the composition of the migration changes as autumn advances.

How the historical timing is described

The 2010 article cites songbird activity in September, followed by movements in October and November involving other migrant groups. Those month references describe examples from the earlier publication, not a current schedule. Weather, food availability and the success of the breeding season can shift the timing from year to year.

How to use the site conceptually

Think of Cape May as a network of habitats rather than a single overlook. A passerine watcher may concentrate on wooded cover, while someone seeking shorebirds will look toward marshes and tidal edges. Raptors and other migrants can add a visible overhead component under suitable conditions. Obtain current maps and access information from local land managers before choosing a trail or observation point.

Great Salt Lake and Bear River Refuge, Utah

Audubon’s account identifies Bear River Refuge on the eastern shore of Great Salt Lake as a key access site. The lake’s shallow margins and associated wetlands offer feeding and resting areas for birds moving through the interior West.

Late summer and later fall

The historical description associates late summer with shorebird activity. As the season progresses, it turns attention to waterfowl and swans. These are broad seasonal examples, not a guarantee that all three groups will be visible on a particular date.

Why the lake matters

An inland salt lake can function as a stopover in an otherwise arid region. Mudflats and shallow water expose food for shorebirds, while marsh vegetation and open water support ducks, geese and swans. Water levels, weather and refuge conditions affect where birds concentrate, so current refuge notices and viewing guidance are essential. The original articles do not establish present-day road access, viewing hours or facility availability.

Monterey Bay, California

Monterey Bay represents the offshore, visible-migration side of the guide. The 2009 account describes fall seabird movements over the Pacific, including species arriving from the Southern Ocean and the Arctic. A coastal observer may therefore be watching birds that have traveled thousands of miles before reaching the bay’s waters.

Seabird watching differs from searching for a songbird in a woodland. Birds may remain far offshore, appear briefly between waves or be easier to identify by flight pattern than by plumage. Weather and sea conditions strongly affect visibility. A sheltered viewpoint may be comfortable while producing fewer sightings; rougher conditions can bring birds closer but also create safety concerns.

Use current coastal access information and local conditions reports when selecting a viewpoint or boat-based outing. The historical guide does not list operators, schedules, launch points or present-day safety requirements, and it does not forecast which seabird species will be present in a given fall.

Izembek Lagoon, Alaska

Izembek Lagoon is described as a staging area where waterfowl and shorebirds gather before long flights over open water. “Staging” is the key idea: birds use the lagoon to feed and build energy before departing, so the site’s importance lies in both the concentration of birds and the demands of the journey ahead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the lagoon is in Alaska and the birds face an extended open-water crossing, conditions can be especially consequential. Wind, visibility and timing influence whether birds remain, depart or arrive in waves. A visitor should expect a remote setting and should not assume that access, transport, lodging or communication services match those of a developed urban park; the historical sources do not document those practical details.

Contact the relevant land manager or visitor service before making arrangements. Verify whether the area is open, which routes are permitted, what safety equipment is advised and whether seasonal services operate during the intended dates.

Hawk Ridge, Duluth, Minnesota

Hawk Ridge is the guide’s raptor-focused destination. Its elevated position near Duluth provides a place to watch migrating birds of prey and to contribute observations to a formal count. The historical article stresses that different raptor species tend to reach their highest numbers at different points in autumn, so “peak migration” is not one universal week.

The reported count

Audubon reported that Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory tallied more than 94,000 raptors per autumn on average. That figure was published in 2010, and Audubon noted that the official total varies from year to year. It should be read as the average reported in that article, not as a current annual count.

Watching a ridge migration

Raptor flights are strongly influenced by wind and rising air. On a favorable day, birds may pass at eye level or circle in thermals; on another, movement can be sparse even during the same part of the season. Current observatory schedules, weather guidance and access rules should be checked directly before visiting.

How to choose among the six examples

Start with the kind of migration you want to observe, then match it to the landscape. The historical guide supports several distinct choices:

  • For landbirds and Caribbean possibilities: choose the Florida park, where the geographic position makes arrivals from the Bahamas or Cuba part of the story.
  • For habitat variety across a long fall season: choose Cape May, whose peninsula and wetlands are described as serving multiple migrant groups.
  • For large wetland concentrations: consider Great Salt Lake and Bear River Refuge, with shorebirds emphasized earlier and waterfowl and swans later.
  • For pelagic and coastal seabirds: consider Monterey Bay, where the account focuses on offshore movement.
  • For a staging-area perspective: consider Izembek Lagoon and the preparation birds make before crossing open water.
  • For counted raptor passage: choose Hawk Ridge, while remembering that species peaks are spread across autumn.

The six sites are not ranked. They represent different migration mechanisms, habitats and observer experiences, so the best choice depends on whether you prefer a stationary overlook, habitat walks, shoreline scanning or a remote staging landscape.

Planning a visit without mistaking history for a forecast

Verify the destination first

  1. Identify the current land manager for the park, refuge, observatory, shoreline or lagoon.
  2. Check opening dates, hours, entrance requirements, closures, road conditions and any reservation system.
  3. Confirm whether seasonal visitor centers, guided walks, counts or viewing platforms are operating during your dates.
  4. Ask about weather hazards, tides, smoke, storms, insects, wildlife restrictions and communication limits where relevant.

Use current migration information separately

Audubon’s current Bird Migration Explorer provides interactive species and location views based on contributed data and studies shared by data partners. Its location and pathway maps can add context when deciding which species or regions to investigate. The methodology notes that the mapped pathways do not include every tracking study, so the maps are informative rather than a complete representation of all birds or routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither the Explorer nor the historical guide should be treated as a day-specific prediction. Local sightings and migration timing change with weather and conditions. Use current local reports, official destination notices and recent observations alongside the Explorer, and allow flexibility in your schedule.

Pack for observation, not certainty

  • Bring binoculars suited to the distance and light available; the original guide explicitly encourages their use.
  • Carry weather-appropriate layers, water and sun or rain protection.
  • For coastal or ridge sites, bring a field notebook or identification app, but keep attention on changing conditions and footing.
  • Use established paths and viewing areas, avoid flushing resting birds and follow refuge or park rules.
  • Expect quiet periods. Migration can occur at night, high overhead or inside cover even when few birds are visible.

What the guide can—and cannot—tell you

It can explain why six very different landscapes have become recognizable migration examples. It can also help you decide whether you are seeking raptors above a ridge, seabirds over open water or stopover birds in wetlands and coastal vegetation.

It cannot establish today’s access, fees, facilities, counts or species forecasts. The destination descriptions come from a 2009 pullout and a 2010 follow-up. Treat their months and observations as historical examples, then make practical decisions from current information supplied by each destination’s manager.

That distinction preserves the guide’s real value. Migration is dynamic, and a place can remain ecologically important even when the exact week, route or number of birds changes. The six selections are best used as a framework for understanding how weather, habitat, flight patterns and geography turn an ordinary landscape into a place where movement becomes visible.
