In an April 11, 2023 TikTok, Ariana Grande said that the past version of her body people were comparing with her appearance at the time was, in her words, the unhealthiest version of her body. She urged people to be gentler and less willing to comment on other people’s bodies, even when they mean to express concern.
What prompted Grande’s response?
Contemporary coverage said Grande was responding to social-media comments on recent photos, including remarks from commenters who described her as unhealthy or too thin and comparisons with older images. Those were people’s judgments about her appearance, not verified medical assessments. Good Morning America and the Los Angeles Times reported on the video on April 12, 2023.
Grande opened by saying she wanted to address “concerns” about her body and what it means to have a body that is seen and scrutinized. Her response was not a medical assessment of her appearance; it was an account of how she had experienced a period in her own life.
What did Ariana Grande say?
Grande said: “Personally for me, the body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body.” She described that earlier period as one when she was “on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life,” adding, “But that in fact wasn’t my healthy.” These are her descriptions of her past experience, not a general claim about antidepressants or a statement about her current health. Her broader request was to be “gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies no matter what.” She said there are different ways to look healthy and beautiful, and that observers may not know what someone else is dealing with. She also suggested offering compliments—or choosing not to comment on an aspect of someone’s appearance that a person dislikes—rather than treating bodies as open for discussion.
Why did she ask people to stop commenting, even out of concern?
Grande’s point was not limited to hostile remarks. A comment framed as praise or worry can still make someone’s body a subject of public judgment, and an observer cannot reliably determine a person’s health from appearance alone. In later reporting, Johanna Kandel, founder and CEO of the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, urged people to examine the intent behind a comment and its impact. Psychologist Rachel Goldman of NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine encouraged people to resist speculating about celebrities’ bodies, noting that such public conversations reinforce the idea that bodies are open to discussion. The Associated Press reported their comments in August 2026.

What her statement does—and does not—establish
- It establishes how Grande characterized a past period and why she objected to comparisons with that time.
- It does not establish her current health, confirm a diagnosis, or provide grounds for diagnosing her.
- Her account of antidepressants and drinking describes her experience; it should not be generalized into a claim about medication or treatment.
The August 2026 public discussion reported by AP followed a new music video and album. It is a later development, separate from the TikTok Grande posted in April 2023.
