In interviews after season two, Overton described the jail-cell scene as a culmination of their relationship and character arcs: a moment built around vulnerability, playfulness, regret, apology, and forgiveness.
Was Caitlyn and Vi’s romance planned from the beginning?
Yes, according to Overton. “The whole team knew from the beginning that this couple was gonna be the endgame,” she told io9/Gizmodo.
That plan did not mean every romantic detail came from Overton. She emphasized that Arcane’s writers, storyboard artists, animators, directors, and other team members all contributed to how Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship appeared onscreen. Overton specifically said a storyboard artist or animator came up with the spit gesture that prompted a question in the interview. The distinction matters: she discussed the team’s shared direction, not a claim that every memorable beat was her individual invention.
Overton also described her perspective as part of that collaborative process. She said the team listened to her as “the lesbian in the room” and helped make the scene feel authentic. That is her account of the production environment—not a claim that one creator’s experience can settle how every viewer interprets the relationship.

What did the writers want the intimate scene to show?
Overton said the scene was meant to advance the relationship rather than stand apart as spectacle. She described its guiding purpose as “the culmination of love and a romantic relationship in our series” and said its dramatic turns should reveal how playful and vulnerable Caitlyn and Vi are, and how they look at one another. As she put it in the io9/Gizmodo interview, each beat needed to disclose something about the characters or their bond.
That goal ties the scene to the conflict that preceded it. Caitlyn has to reckon with having hit Vi; the exchange includes regret and an apology, as well as the forgiveness they offer each other. The intimacy therefore carries emotional history into the present: it shows closeness alongside the hurt that the characters have to face.

Why is the scene set in a jail cell?
The setting was deliberate in its eventual meaning, though it was not Overton’s original pitch. She said her first reaction was hesitation, then came to see the cell as a place Vi could reclaim and reframe—a space connected to her past trauma rather than only defined by it. Overton discussed the choice in her interview with io9/Gizmodo.
The location also gives the scene a character-specific detail: it reveals Vi’s tattoo and lets Caitlyn react to it. The cell is not simply an unusual backdrop; in Overton’s account, its significance comes from what Vi has lived through and how she can now inhabit the space differently.

How does the scene complete Vi and Caitlyn’s arcs?
Vi moves from protecting others toward recognizing what she wants
In a separate conversation with Polygon, republished by Arcader News, Overton described Vi as a protector who had not given much thought to herself. The scene lets Vi answer what she wants through action. In that sense, the romantic culmination also marks a shift in how Vi attends to her own desires.
Caitlyn has to choose what kind of leader she will be
Overton linked Caitlyn’s arc to questions of revenge, leadership, and whether to fulfill her mother’s expectations or define herself. These decisions sit alongside the relationship rather than being replaced by it: Caitlyn’s personal and political choices help shape the person entering the scene, just as Vi’s history shapes hers.

Are Caitlyn and Vi opposites, or do they work well together?
Overton has described the pair as opposites brought together. Their differences are part of the attraction, but the interviews do not suggest that romance erases conflict. Hailee Steinfeld, who voices Vi, described the relationship as “so beautiful and so complex” and characterized the pair as trusting and effective together while still capable of disagreement. She discussed their dynamic in Netflix Tudum’s interview.
That combination—trust and friction—helps explain why their relationship can feel tender without being simple. Their closeness develops amid disagreement and consequential choices, not outside the conflicts that define them.

Where does Arcane fit in the League of Legends universe?
Netflix’s season-two behind-the-scenes feature identifies Arcane as a series based on Riot Games’ League of Legends and names Christian Linke and Alex Yee as co-creators, with Fortiche Production and Riot Games as partners. Netflix says the story concludes with its second season; availability can vary by region.
For Caitlyn and Vi, the interviews offer a specific account of creative intent: an endgame romance developed collaboratively, with an intimate scene designed to carry emotional, character, and setting-related meaning at once. That account explains what Overton and Steinfeld have said about the work, while leaving room for viewers to bring their own readings to the relationship.
