No. YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium are different memberships, but YouTube Premium includes all YouTube Music Premium benefits. Music Premium is for the YouTube Music experience; YouTube Premium adds ad-free viewing, downloads and background playback for regular YouTube videos, plus YouTube Kids benefits where available.

YouTube describes Premium as “all the YouTube Premium benefits + access to all the YouTube Music Premium benefits.” Its subscription guidance therefore makes the relationship straightforward: Premium contains Music Premium, not the other way around.
What YouTube Music Premium includes
YouTube Music Premium is designed for people who mainly listen through the YouTube Music app or website. Its documented features include:
- Ad-free music playback in YouTube Music.
- Background listening for music, including when the phone screen is off or another app is open.
- Audio-only playback where available.
- Offline downloads for music and other supported YouTube Music content.
- Access to music videos, remixes, covers, live performances and other music-focused material in YouTube Music.
- Background playback for podcasts in YouTube Music.
The service is not limited to conventional album tracks. YouTube Music’s catalog can include official videos, fan covers and live recordings, with audio and video modes available for supported songs. However, “ad-free” does not mean that every podcast is free of advertising: creator-read sponsorships, inserted promotions and other podcast advertising can remain. What YouTube Premium adds
YouTube Premium is the broader membership. In addition to the YouTube Music Premium features above, it generally provides:
- Removal of YouTube-served ads from regular YouTube videos in supported contexts.
- Offline downloads for regular YouTube videos.
- Background play for regular YouTube videos on supported mobile devices.
- Premium access across YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids, subject to country, device, plan and content limitations.
That means someone who watches documentaries, news, tutorials or other ordinary YouTube videos will normally get substantially more from YouTube Premium than from Music Premium. YouTube’s feature documentation describes the video downloads, background play and advertising scope.
Does Music Premium remove ads from all of YouTube?
No. Music Premium’s benefits are centered on YouTube Music. It should not be treated as a cheaper version of full YouTube Premium or as a universal ad-free pass for the main YouTube app. A Music Premium subscriber may still encounter YouTube-served advertising when watching ordinary videos outside the YouTube Music experience.

Even YouTube Premium is not an all-purpose advertising blocker. Creator-read sponsorships, product placements, channel promotions and some live-event or partner promotions can remain. Podcast advertising and creator-inserted promotions can also remain in YouTube Music. “Ad-free” refers primarily to advertising served by YouTube in supported areas, not every commercial message embedded in content. Which subscription should you buy?
Choose YouTube Music Premium if:
- You mainly listen to music in YouTube Music.
- You want music without YouTube-served ads.
- You need music downloads and background listening.
- You rarely watch ordinary YouTube videos.
- You do not need regular-video downloads, video background play or YouTube Kids Premium benefits.
Choose YouTube Premium if:
- You regularly watch videos in the main YouTube app or website.
- You want fewer YouTube-served pre-roll and mid-roll ads in supported videos.
- You want to download regular videos for offline viewing.
- You want ordinary videos to continue playing in the background on mobile.
- You use both YouTube and YouTube Music and want one membership.
- Your household needs the broader YouTube experience on an eligible family or two-person plan.
For a music-only listener, Music Premium may be sufficient. For anyone who watches YouTube as well as listening to music, Premium is the logical single subscription because the music membership is already included.
Can you subscribe to both?
Technically, separate YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium memberships can exist, and the billing systems may charge them separately. But buying both for the same Google account usually duplicates the Music Premium entitlement. YouTube recommends reviewing active memberships and canceling the standalone Music subscription when YouTube Premium already supplies the needed benefits. Check for duplicate billing
- Open YouTube’s Purchases and memberships page while signed in.
- Look for active YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium memberships.
- If Premium is active and both belong to the same intended user, keep Premium and cancel the duplicate Music membership if it provides no separate benefit.
- If the charge is not listed there, check the billing provider. Apple subscriptions are canceled through Apple; partner-billed memberships must be managed through that provider.
Separate accounts, separate households or intentionally different billing arrangements can be legitimate reasons to maintain more than one membership. The important step is to inspect the accounts and providers rather than assume two charges are automatically linked.

YouTube documents an upgrade route for active Music Premium subscribers:
- Sign in to the Google account with the active Music Premium membership.
- Go to
music.youtube.com/paid_memberships. - Open Offers from YouTube.
- Under YouTube Premium, select Learn More.
- Follow the sign-up instructions.
The exact switch and billing treatment can differ when the original membership was purchased through Apple, Google Play or a third-party partner. Check which company bills you before changing plans. YouTube’s upgrade instructions provide the current account path.

Families, students and annual plans
Plan availability and prices vary by country, device, operating system, billing channel and promotion. YouTube currently documents individual monthly memberships, annual prepaid individual plans in selected countries, family plans, two-person plans in some locations and student plans for eligible students. Confirm the offer shown on the official checkout page rather than relying on an old comparison article.
- Family: benefits can cover up to six people, with members generally required to live in the same household as the family manager.
- Two-person: covers two people where offered, with the same household requirement.
- Student: requires full-time enrollment at an approved institution, verification through SheerID and annual re-verification; eligibility can last up to four years while requirements continue to be met.
- Annual: prepaid, individual and non-recurring where available. It provides 12 months, cannot be paused and is generally non-refundable. Up to 24 months of prepaid access may be held. Do not assume it costs less than 12 monthly payments without checking the current figures.

Neither YouTube Premium nor YouTube Music Premium automatically includes YouTube TV, Primetime Channels, channel memberships or NFL Sunday Ticket. Downloads are temporary offline access tied to the membership and supported content, not permanent ownership. Features can behave differently on browsers, phones, smart TVs, game consoles and other devices.

Memberships are also intended primarily for use in the country where they were purchased. Country, travel and device restrictions are described in YouTube Music’s restrictions. YouTube announced an expanded NBCUniversal partnership on July 27, 2026 that could give eligible U.S. YouTube Premium subscribers access to ad-supported Peacock Premium, but that rollout should be treated as account- and availability-dependent—not as a Music Premium feature. Where to check current pricing
There is no single universal price. Before subscribing, compare the offer displayed for your country, plan type and billing route, including taxes, trial terms and the renewal price after any promotion. Official starting points are YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium. Annual purchase pages are YouTube Premium Annual and YouTube Music Premium Annual.
Bottom line
YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium are not the same membership. Music Premium is the music-focused option; YouTube Premium is the wider YouTube membership that includes Music Premium. Choose Music Premium if your needs stop at music and podcasts. Choose YouTube Premium if you also watch regular YouTube videos, want video downloads or background video playback. Unless separate accounts or circumstances are intentional, paying for both is usually unnecessary.
