No—podcasts are not dying. In the United States, podcast consumption is near record levels. What is changing is the format and the business: video is now central to discovery, platforms are rethinking costly investments, and audience growth does not guarantee creator profit. The old idea of a podcast as an audio feed that grows through downloads and generic ads is giving way to a more competitive, multi-format medium.
What does “dying” mean?
The claim can describe several different things: fewer people listening, falling downloads, fewer active shows, weaker advertising, lower creator income, less cultural influence, or audio giving way to video. Those measures are not interchangeable. A medium can reach more people while becoming harder for an individual show to monetize.
The clearest current evidence points to a healthy U.S. audience alongside a tougher, more fragmented market for creators. This is not proof that every genre, platform, or country is growing. Most of the figures below are U.S.-specific and measure podcast consumption across audio and video.
The audience is not disappearing
Edison Research’s 2026 Infinite Dial reports that 80% of Americans age 12 and older have consumed a podcast in audio or video at least once. Fifty-eight percent—an estimated 167 million people—consumed one in the past month, and 45%—about 130 million—did so in the past week. Monthly online-audio consumption reached 81%, or approximately 233 million people.

Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
These figures rebut the broad claim that Americans have stopped consuming podcasts. They do not show that audio-only listening is growing at the same rate, that each show is gaining listeners, or that creators are earning more. A person who watches a clip or a full video episode is part of the podcast audience measured across formats, but that behavior is not the same as downloading an audio episode.
Podcasting is also no longer only a young-adult habit. Edison reports that monthly online-audio listening among Americans age 55 and older rose from 52% in 2024 to 70% in 2026. Familiar connected devices, cars, smart TVs and video platforms may all help bring spoken-word content to people who do not think of themselves as podcast-app users; the figures establish broader adoption, not which single factor caused it.
Video has become part of podcasting
In Edison’s third-quarter 2025 measurement, 82% of weekly podcast consumers watched podcast video, while 78% listened to audio-only podcast content. In 2023, the comparable figures were 73% watching and 89% listening to audio-only content, according to The Podcast Consumer 2026.

The same person may discover a show through a short video, watch an interview on YouTube, then listen to another episode while driving. A video viewer may never subscribe to the show’s RSS feed. Platform views, audio downloads, unique listeners and watch time describe different behaviors and should not be treated as interchangeable counts.

YouTube has become a major U.S. discovery and listening surface. Edison’s 2025 Infinite Dial found it was the service used most often for podcast listening by 33% of U.S. weekly podcast consumers. YouTube offers search, recommendations, thumbnails, clips, comments and established advertising tools; an audio RSS feed alone does not provide the same visual packaging or recommendation system. But this is a finding about Edison’s U.S. weekly-listener measure, not a universal global ranking or a comparison of download totals. See The Infinite Dial 2025.
Video is not a universal upgrade. It can add equipment, editing, lighting, captions, thumbnails and pressure to perform on camera. Audio remains convenient during chores, exercise and travel, and can be less expensive to produce. A practical approach is to match production to the show: audio-first for intimate, documentary or fiction work; simple video for interviews where expressions and guests help discovery; and video-led production when the subject is inherently visual or an existing audience is already on YouTube.
Why does the industry feel weaker?
The investment boom has cooled
Media companies and platforms spent heavily on networks, celebrity shows, studios and exclusive deals. When those bets miss expectations, layoffs, closures and canceled programs make headlines. Those are real signs of corporate retrenchment, but they do not by themselves demonstrate that listeners have left the medium. A failed exclusive is evidence about a company’s strategy or economics—not a census of podcast demand.

There are more shows competing for attention, so publishing an episode is not the same as distributing it. A show needs a clear audience promise, memorable premise, consistent schedule and routes to discovery: search-friendly titles, clips where suitable, guests who can help reach listeners, and promotion through a website, newsletter or community. Generic concepts and irregular publishing are difficult to distinguish in a crowded feed.

Downloads are not a complete health score
Download counts can be affected by automatic downloads, caching, multiple devices, dynamic ad insertion, platform definitions and privacy protections. Video views are measured differently again. A more useful picture combines unique listeners or viewers, completion, return frequency, subscriber growth, direct revenue, ad response, community participation and production costs. A viral clip may bring reach without creating repeat listeners; a small specialist show may be valuable to a focused audience even without chart-scale numbers.
Audience growth does not equal creator profitability
Recording, hosting, editing, video, transcription, artwork, research, marketing, guest coordination, rights and staff time all cost money. Advertising alone may not cover those expenses, particularly for a small show without sales representation or a distinct audience advertisers want to reach. Costs and revenue potential vary substantially by genre, production approach and audience; the available reach data does not establish a typical creator income.
Is podcasting still useful to advertisers?
The evidence indicates continued advertiser interest, not guaranteed returns for every show. Edison’s 2026 Podcast Consumer report says 76% of weekly podcast consumers report taking some action after hearing a podcast ad, such as visiting a website, buying, using a promotion code or recommending a product. A Nielsen Podcast Fusion media-mix analysis cited in the report found that reallocating budget to podcasts increased reach among adults 18–54 by 41% without increasing total spend.
Those are specific findings, not a promise that every podcast campaign will outperform other media. The action figure is self-reported, and the media-mix result comes from a particular analysis rather than a universal rule. The IAB/PwC U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study discusses the development of programmatic inventory, video advertising and live-event opportunities. Industry outlooks and forecasts should not be mistaken for realized results, and advertising demand can coexist with concentrated revenue and weak economics for individual creators.

The business model is expanding beyond the audio ad
The simple sequence—record audio, publish an RSS feed, sell ads—is no longer the only model. A show may publish audio and video, distribute clips, build a direct audience relationship, then earn revenue from several sources:
- Host-read sponsorships: A natural fit for trusted hosts and defined audiences, but often difficult to secure without meaningful reach or sales support.
- Programmatic ads: Can scale advertising access, though control and returns may be limited for smaller shows.
- Memberships and subscriptions: Work best when loyal listeners have a clear reason to pay for bonus material, community or access—and when the creator can retain members.
- Video-platform revenue: Can matter for video-led shows, subject to platform eligibility, rules and revenue sharing. It also increases dependence on the platform.
- Events: Live shows can deepen audience loyalty, but involve venues, staffing, ticketing and financial risk.
- Products and services: Courses, consulting, coaching, books and specialist services can be more valuable than ads when the show builds trust around expertise. In that model, the podcast may be the way people discover the business rather than the whole product.
- Affiliate commerce and licensing: Can fit product-focused shows or established franchises, but require genuine audience fit, appropriate disclosures and, for licensing, valuable rights and a proven audience.
For a documentary or narrative show, for example, the core value may be the reporting, a loyal community, live discussions or rights to a recognizable series—not simply a large download total. The strongest model depends on the audience and the work, not on copying the largest studio’s format.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing audio, video or both
| Show or situation | Reasonable starting approach |
|---|---|
| Intimate interviews, fiction or audio documentary | Audio-first can preserve the form’s strengths and keep production manageable. |
| Interview show with expressive hosts or guests | Try simple video if the visual interaction adds value; repurpose clips selectively. |
| Demonstrations, tutorials or visual subjects | Video-led production may communicate what sound alone cannot. |
| Limited budget or unvalidated premise | Start with a reliable, low-cost audio workflow; test demand before committing to a studio. |
| Existing YouTube audience | Consider a video-led version while offering an audio feed for listening elsewhere. |
| Expert or business show | Pair the show with a website and email capture, and judge it partly by qualified leads or customer relationships. |
| High-cost studio concept | Validate audience interest and a repeatable publishing workflow before taking on fixed production costs. |
Video can help with discovery, but it is not a substitute for a strong premise or a useful full episode. A show can thrive as audio if the format fits and costs stay low; it can have substantial YouTube reach yet modest traditional podcast downloads. The choice should follow the audience’s habits and the show’s value, not pressure to imitate celebrity studios.

How listeners and creators should read the signals
Listeners may feel that podcasting is shrinking because favorite shows end, platforms remove exclusives, feeds publish less often, or charts change. More discovery may now happen through clips and recommendations rather than a podcast app’s directory. None of those observations alone tells us whether total consumption is rising or whether a particular creator is sustainable.

For creators, judge health across five separate dimensions:
- Reach: Monthly and weekly audience, by format and relevant demographic—not only total views.
- Engagement: Completion, returning audience, time spent, community response and actions after ads.
- Supply: Whether active shows publish consistently, and whether the genres and formats you serve remain viable.
- Economics: Revenue per engaged audience member, sponsorship conversion, subscription retention and production cost per episode.
- Independence: A website, email list or other direct connection, plus more than one route to distribution and revenue.
Platform growth can coexist with falling rates for a particular show; a network can grow while one program loses audience; and a niche show can be commercially sound at a scale that would not make a celebrity production viable. These cases are why no single download, view or industry headline settles the question.
So, are podcasts dying?
No. U.S. podcast consumption is strong, but the category is changing from an audio-first format into a broader spoken-word and creator-media business. Video has become a major part of how people find and consume shows; audio remains useful and comparatively efficient. Meanwhile, the professional market is less forgiving of expensive, undifferentiated productions and business plans built on advertising alone.
The durable opportunity is not simply to start a podcast. It is to make a distinctive show for a defined audience, keep its costs proportionate, distribute it in formats that suit that audience, and build a direct relationship that can support more than one revenue path. The easy-growth era may be over; podcasting itself is not.
