Arctic-Breeding Brant Migration: What the July and December Maps Show

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The paired eBird maps show a clear seasonal redistribution of Brant reports. In July, reports cluster around Arctic breeding areas in Canada and Alaska, plus Hudson and James Bays. By December, reports are concentrated on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and around the eastern Great Lakes. The maps illustrate where eBird users reported Brant in two seasonal snapshots; they are not continuous tracks of individual birds, a population estimate, or a complete calendar of migration.

What the July and December Brant maps show

BirdWatching’s “Before and after maps reveal autumn migration of arctic-breeding Brant” compares two eBird distribution panels labeled July 2003–13 and December 2003–13. The article was first published on October 16, 2014, and updated August 30, 2024. Its central message is geographic rather than numerical: the places where users reported Brant in July are largely different from the places where users reported them in December.

The July panel places reports near high-latitude breeding areas. The December panel shifts the main concentrations southward to coastal North America and the eastern Great Lakes. That contrast supports a broad seasonal movement from Arctic breeding regions toward wintering areas, but it does not show every stop, the route of any particular bird, or the dates on which migration occurs.

What the maps measure—and what they do not

Each colored square represents a Brant report submitted by an eBird user during the map’s stated month and reporting period. The maps therefore combine observations made by many people across the 2003–13 interval described by the source as ten years of eBird-user reports. They show reported distribution, not a census of all Brant.

  • They do show: where observers recorded Brant in July and in December, and how the broad geographic pattern differs between those months.
  • They do not show: a continuous movement line, the number of birds at each square, the proportion of the population in each region, or an exact autumn passage schedule.
  • They should not be read as: evidence that every Brant visits every highlighted region, or that unmarked areas contain no birds.

Observation coverage can vary by place and by month. A dense cluster can reflect birds being present, observers finding them, or both. A sparse area can indicate fewer birds, fewer observations, or a combination. The safest conclusion is the one the comparison directly supports: the center of reported distribution changes markedly between July and December.

Where July reports place Arctic-breeding Brant

High Arctic Canada

The July map shows breeding-site reports on islands in high Arctic Canada. These northern islands are part of the map’s strongest July signal, placing Brant close to the high-latitude areas where the source says breeding occurs. The map is useful here because it connects the summer distribution with a recognizable geographic setting rather than presenting July records as scattered points without context.

Northern and western Alaska

July reports also extend along the northern and western coasts of Alaska. Together with the Canadian Arctic records, these squares form a broad Arctic breeding-region pattern. The map does not establish that all birds in this region nest at the same time or leave by the same route; it simply records where Brant were reported during July.

Hudson Bay and James Bay

Hudson and James Bays are additional July areas identified in the source. Their inclusion matters because the summer pattern is not limited to one narrow strip of the Arctic. Reports span several northern regions, including the Canadian Arctic and the northern and western Alaskan coasts.

Southern July records

The July panel also contains purple squares in southern Alaska and along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of the lower 48 states. The source identifies two explanations for these southern records: some are sub-adults that remained south for the summer, while some adults likely returned from nesting areas early. These records are exceptions to the main Arctic concentration, not evidence that the whole population summers evenly across the continent.

Where December reports place Brant

Pacific coast winter concentration

By December, most reported Brant on the western side of the map fall along the Pacific coast from southern British Columbia through Baja California and into western Mexico. This is one of the two major coastal arcs in the winter panel. The map shows a distribution extending across national borders, so a December search should be planned by coastal region rather than around a single state or province.

Atlantic coast winter concentration

The eastern concentration runs along the Atlantic coast from the Maritimes to North Carolina. December reports in this corridor show that the winter distribution is not exclusively Pacific. The Atlantic records form a second broad coastal cluster, separated geographically from the Pacific reports by the continent’s interior.

Eastern Great Lakes

The December map also shows reports around the eastern Great Lakes. These records are an important inland component of the winter pattern. They demonstrate that the main December distribution includes a substantial Great Lakes cluster as well as the two coastal concentrations.

Southern Alaska and Hawaii

A few December Brant are reported in southern Alaska and Hawaii. “A few” is an important qualification: these are outlying records relative to the principal Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Great Lakes concentrations. Their presence means the December map should not be reduced to a rule that Brant occur only on the lower continental coasts.

Why central-state records are easy to miss

Records from the central states are described as rare. The source’s practical advice is to look for Brant in flocks of other geese. This is a better search strategy than treating a rare inland record as proof of a large, easily visible concentration. A birder checking a mixed goose flock should examine individuals carefully and verify the identification rather than assuming that every bird in the flock is the more common species.

July versus December: the geographic comparison

Map panel Main reported regions What the pattern suggests Important qualification
July 2003–13 High Arctic Canadian islands; northern and western Alaska; Hudson and James Bays Summer reports are concentrated near Arctic breeding areas. Southern Alaska and lower-48 coastal squares include sub-adults that stayed south and adults that likely returned early from nesting areas.
December 2003–13 Pacific coast from southern British Columbia to Baja California and western Mexico; Atlantic coast from the Maritimes to North Carolina; eastern Great Lakes Winter reports shift toward coastal and Great Lakes regions. The map shows reported locations, not equal abundance throughout each corridor.
December outliers Southern Alaska and Hawaii; rare central-state records Brant can occur outside the largest winter clusters. These records are described as few or rare and should not be treated as the dominant pattern.

How to interpret the maps as migration evidence

They are seasonal snapshots, not individual tracks

A July square and a December square do not represent the same bird moving from one point to the other. The map combines reports from many observers and many years. It can show that the reported center of distribution is far north in July and much farther south in December, but it cannot connect those observations into a route taken by an identified individual.

They do not provide exact autumn passage dates

The source does not specify when Brant depart the Arctic, when they reach particular coastlines, or how long they remain at any stop. December is a winter comparison point, not a timestamp for the end of migration. Likewise, July records establish a summer distribution but do not reveal the precise date on which nesting areas were occupied.

Broad clusters are more reliable than apparent boundaries

The strongest interpretation concerns the large-scale clusters: Arctic areas in July, then Pacific and Atlantic coasts and the eastern Great Lakes in December. The edges of those clusters should be treated cautiously. A missing square is not proof of absence, and a single square does not establish a regular route or a large local population.

Different birds can follow different seasonal patterns

The source specifically distinguishes sub-adults that remain south during summer and adults that may return from nesting areas early. That variation explains why southern July reports coexist with the main Arctic breeding pattern. It also reinforces why a map of reports cannot be used to assign one identical itinerary to every Brant.

Where to look for Brant in the field

The December pattern gives birders a practical starting framework, while the map’s limitations indicate how cautiously to search.

  1. Choose a broad winter region. Begin with the Pacific coast, the Atlantic coast, or the eastern Great Lakes, where the December reports are concentrated.
  2. Check mixed goose flocks. This is especially important in central states, where records are rare and Brant may be encountered among other geese rather than in an obvious single-species flock.
  3. Use the month as a guide, not a guarantee. A December map square indicates that users reported Brant in that seasonal panel; it does not promise that birds will be present at every location every year.
  4. Record the observation carefully. Because the map depends on submitted sightings, clear location, date, and identification details make a new record more useful to the shared database.
  5. Check the live distribution view before traveling. The article identifies eBird as a real-time online checklist operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon and points readers to its live Brant distribution map. Conditions can change after the historical 2003–13 comparison.

Binoculars are an optional aid for examining distant or mixed goose flocks, but the map itself does not evaluate or recommend a particular model.

Why the 2003–13 period still matters

The historical panels are valuable because both months use the same broad reporting window and the same observation platform. That makes July-versus-December geography the central comparison. It is not a population trend analysis: the source reports no population estimate, sample size, percentage change, or abundance index.

The article’s August 30, 2024 update date does not change the labels on the reproduced panels. The map period remains July and December 2003–13. Readers should therefore distinguish the historical comparison from the live eBird map, which can contain more recent submitted observations.

A careful way to summarize the evidence

  • In July, eBird reports are concentrated in Arctic breeding areas of Canada and Alaska, with additional records around Hudson and James Bays.
  • In December, reports are concentrated along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and around the eastern Great Lakes.
  • Southern Alaska and Hawaii have a few December records, while central-state records are rare.
  • Some southern July records are explained as sub-adults remaining south or adults returning early from nesting areas.
  • The maps show reported distribution at two seasonal snapshots, not a complete migration route, exact passage dates, or the movement of individual birds.

That combination of a strong north-to-south seasonal contrast and clearly marked exceptions is what makes the paired maps useful. They provide an accessible visual explanation of where Brant are reported in summer and winter while preserving the uncertainty that comes with user-submitted observations.
