Why does Vi look different in Season 2?
Her black hair and makeup reflect her state of mind
In episode 5, Vi has black hair and grungy makeup. A Netflix Tudum making-of feature published November 25, 2024, explains that this is more than a new hairstyle: the design communicates how she feels. Art director Julien Georgel of Fortiche Production said, “Her life has become very gray and black.”

The look is meant to conceal her distinctive features
Production designer Arnaud-Loris Baudry said the team imagined Vi would hide her hair color and tattoo after losing what she cared for and feeling she belonged neither to Piltover nor Zaun. As he put it, “We imagined that she would hide her distinctive features — her hair color, her tattoo — and lose herself in the one thing she is good at: fighting.”
The broader visual approach also shifts the show into new moods and environments. Georgel described the aim as: “We tried to bring the viewers to new moods and environments.” These explanations come from Netflix’s later production feature, not from the trailer itself.

How Vi’s look fits the season’s story
Netflix’s Season 2 guide sets the conflict in motion with Jinx’s attack on the Piltover Council. Vi teams up with Caitlyn and accepts an Enforcer badge, placing her in a changed relationship with the city and the conflict. Her altered appearance gives visual form to that upheaval without reducing it to a simple makeover.
