Apple released the trailer for Bono: Stories of Surrender on April 30, 2025. The conventional film premiered globally on Apple TV+ on May 30, 2025, while a separate Vision Pro edition, Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive), premiered the same day. Apple called that edition the first feature-length film available in its Apple Immersive Video format—not the first full-length immersive film ever made.
What the trailer is for
The trailer promotes Bono: Stories of Surrender, a visual reimagining of Bono’s one-man stage production, Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief…. The project draws on his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, combining spoken autobiography with performances of U2 songs.
Apple’s trailer presents the material as an intimate, dramatic solo performance rather than a conventional behind-the-scenes music documentary. Contemporary coverage noted its black-and-white presentation. The film also includes previously unseen material from the tour or Beacon Theatre performances, as described in Apple’s announcements.

What “immersive” means here

| Edition | Platform | Presentation | Premiere |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bono: Stories of Surrender | Apple TV app and Apple TV+ | Conventional screen-based film | May 30, 2025 |
| Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive) | Apple Vision Pro | Apple Immersive Video | May 30, 2025 |
Apple says the Vision Pro edition uses 8K capture, Spatial Audio and a 180-degree field of view intended to place the viewer onstage with Bono. Apple Immersive Video is a capture and playback format designed for stereoscopic, spatial viewing on Vision Pro; it is not simply the standard movie shown on a larger virtual screen.
“Immersive” also does not establish game-like interactivity. Apple’s description supports a spatial presentation, not claims that viewers can change the story, move through scenes or select camera angles. Nor does the evidence establish that every scene, edit or song is identical between the two editions.

Why Apple called it the first feature-length film
The precise claim is platform-specific: Apple called Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive) the first feature-length film available in Apple Immersive Video. That wording matters. Apple had already released shorter immersive experiences, performances and sports-related projects for Vision Pro, including a Metallica concert experience announced in March 2025 (Apple Newsroom).
It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Bono’s film as the first long-form immersive movie in cinema history. The milestone is Apple’s move from short demonstrations and episodic material toward a feature-length production in its own format.

Release history and access
Key dates
- April 30, 2025: Apple unveiled the trailer.
- May 16, 2025: The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, according to Apple’s Cannes announcement.
- May 30, 2025: The standard Apple TV+ film and the Vision Pro immersive edition premiered.
As of 2026, this is a completed release rather than an upcoming trailer story. The standard title can be watched through the Apple TV app where Apple TV+ and the film are available. Apple’s 2025 supported-device list included iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, Vision Pro, selected smart TVs, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation, Xbox and the web. Device and catalog availability can vary by country and may change.
The immersive edition requires an Apple Vision Pro, the Apple TV app and access to Apple’s Immersive Video catalog in a supported region. Watching the regular Apple TV+ version on a television, phone, tablet, computer or ordinary VR headset does not reproduce the 180-degree Vision Pro presentation.

Does this justify buying a Vision Pro?
For someone who already owns Vision Pro and follows Bono, U2 or Apple’s spatial-video work, the film is a substantial showcase for the platform because it applies the format to a full-length performance documentary. It is not a sound reason by itself to buy a high-cost headset solely for one title.
- Choose the standard film if broad device compatibility and ordinary screen viewing matter most.
- Choose the immersive edition if you already have Vision Pro and want Apple’s spatial presentation.
- Do not assume that the entire Apple TV+ catalog, or every Apple Immersive Video title, is available in immersive form.
Apple offers a free in-store Vision Pro demonstration where the headset is available; details are on its official Vision Pro page. Comfort, headset cost, regional catalog access and the size of Apple’s wider immersive library remain separate purchase considerations.
The bottom line
Bono: Stories of Surrender is both an Apple TV+ film and a Vision Pro-specific immersive edition. Its significance is real but narrower than the “first ever” wording suggests: it was Apple’s first feature-length title in Apple Immersive Video, not the first full-length immersive film in general.
