Apple did not launch a new Apple TV hardware model in 2025. The Apple TV associated with that period remained the third-generation Apple TV 4K, a device Apple announced on October 18, 2022, and released on November 4, 2022.
As of the latest research snapshot on August 12, 2026, that 2022 model was still the current Apple TV 4K. It uses an A15 Bionic chip, supports 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos, and comes in 64GB Wi-Fi and 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet versions. However, reported U.S. prices rose sharply in June 2026, making the aging hardware harder to recommend at full retail price.
What happened to the expected Apple TV 2025 launch?
The short answer is that there was no confirmed 2025 Apple TV hardware launch. Apple’s official events archive includes its September 9, 2025 event, but the event materials and contemporaneous reporting did not show a new Apple TV announcement.
That distinction matters because many technology headlines treated a possible refresh as if it were a confirmed product. Apple did not announce a 2025 Apple TV, did not confirm a new design, and did not publish specifications for a successor by the research cutoff. The third-generation Apple TV 4K remained the relevant product.

The Apple TV 4K that remained current
The product to evaluate is the third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in 2022—not an Apple TV 2025, Apple TV 4, or fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
Apple positioned the box as more than a streaming player. It is a gateway to Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, AirPlay, the Apple TV Remote in Control Center, and the Home app. It can also serve as a home hub for remote access, automations, and compatible Matter accessories.
For buyers who need Apple-specific integration now, the Apple TV 4K 64GB Wi-Fi is the straightforward configuration to investigate. Availability and price should be checked immediately before purchase because the U.S. price has changed and retailer inventory can vary.
Confirmed specifications
These are the specifications of the 2022 third-generation model. They should not be presented as specifications for a 2025 launch.
| Feature | Confirmed specification |
|---|---|
| Generation | Third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in 2022 |
| Processor | Apple A15 Bionic |
| Storage | 64GB on the Wi-Fi model; 128GB on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model |
| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO on both configurations |
| Wired networking | Gigabit Ethernet on the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model |
| Smart-home networking | Thread networking on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model |
| Video output | Up to 2160p at 60 frames per second |
| HDR formats | Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG with compatible content, displays, and apps |
| Audio | Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 |
| HDMI | HDMI 2.1 |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.0 |
| Remote | Siri Remote with a USB-C charging connector |
| Power | Integrated power supply |
| Dimensions | 93mm wide, 93mm deep, and 31mm high |
| Weight | 208 grams for Wi-Fi; 214 grams for Wi-Fi + Ethernet |
Video and HDR support
The Apple TV 4K can output up to 2160p at 60fps. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG, but the format a viewer actually receives depends on the television, the content, the app, and the specific title. A compatible television alone does not guarantee that every program will be available in every HDR format.
Apple also states that an HDMI cable is sold separately. The cable requirement should be matched to the television, receiver, and desired video formats rather than assumed from the product name alone. If your equipment calls for the relevant bandwidth, you can compare a HDMI 2.1 cable for Apple TV 4K; do not treat a particular cable label as mandatory for every television setup.
Audio support
Supported audio formats include Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1. Actual playback also depends on the streaming service, program, television or receiver, and speaker system.
The two configurations are not identical
The 64GB version has Wi-Fi 6 and no Ethernet port. The 128GB version combines more storage with Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking. Both versions use Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO.

It is the relevant choice for a household that wants wired networking or intends to use the Apple TV as a Thread-enabled part of a compatible smart-home setup. A suitable Ethernet cable for Apple TV 4K is needed for a wired connection, although many homes will already have a compatible cable.
Apple TV 4K pricing: $129 originally, then a reported increase
When Apple announced the third-generation Apple TV 4K in 2022, the starting U.S. price was $129 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model. The 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model was reported at a launch-era price of $149.
In June 2026, MacRumors reported that U.S. prices had increased to:
Rank #2
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
| Configuration | Original or launch-era U.S. price | Reported U.S. price in June 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 64GB Wi-Fi | $129 | $199 |
| 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet | $149 reported | $249 |
These are U.S. figures, and the newer figures are reported prices rather than prices confirmed by an Apple press release. Apple can change store pricing without refreshing the hardware, so readers should verify the live price before publication or purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe increase changes the buying calculation. A 2022 design with an A15 chip may still be entirely adequate for streaming, AirPlay, Apple services, and ordinary smart-home use. But paying $199 or $249 for hardware that has remained unchanged since 2022 is a less attractive proposition than buying it near its original price.
Apple’s certified-refurbished store also listed third-generation Apple TV 4K units. Price-sensitive buyers should compare Apple refurbished Apple TV 4K inventory with new stock, while checking the exact configuration, warranty terms, condition description, and availability in their country.
What has been rumored about a successor?
Reports before and after 2025 have pointed to a possible successor with a newer A-series chip, updated wireless connectivity, and continued Thread support. MacRumors also reported expectations that Apple was testing or seeking to pair a future Apple TV with smarter Siri capabilities.
Those reports remain rumors or expectations, not confirmed specifications. By August 12, 2026, Apple had not officially confirmed:
- A specific successor chip;
- Wi-Fi 7 or 6GHz wireless support;
- A new industrial design;
- A price below $100;
- AI-powered or otherwise smarter Siri features for a new Apple TV; or
- A definite release date.
Earlier 2025 reporting had anticipated a late-2025 launch, but that expected release did not occur. Later expectations shifted toward 2026. That still does not establish that a 2026 model will launch, what it will cost, or which rumored features it will include.
The safe conclusion is not that Apple canceled an Apple TV 2025. The evidence supports a narrower statement: the expected refresh was not confirmed or released in 2025, and a rumored successor remained unannounced at the research cutoff.
Why the missing 2025 launch matters
1. The hardware cycle became unusually long
The current model dates from 2022. That makes it an older product relative to the newer Apple silicon and wireless standards appearing elsewhere in Apple’s product range.

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Age does not make the Apple TV 4K unusable. Its A15 chip, 4K output, HDR support, Dolby Atmos compatibility, and Apple ecosystem features remain relevant. The concern is value: the longer Apple keeps the same hardware on sale—especially after a reported price increase—the more a buyer should distinguish between present capability and future-proofing.
2. Apple TV is an ecosystem gateway
For an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Music, Apple TV+, or Apple Home user, Apple TV can consolidate several functions. AirPlay can send content from Apple devices to the television, the Apple TV Remote is available through Control Center, and the Home app connects the device to Apple’s smart-home platform.
Apple TV can also operate as a home hub for remote access and automations, including support for compatible Matter accessories. This makes the product more strategically important than a generic streaming stick, even though the basic television function is familiar.
3. Thread support is configuration-specific
Apple’s support documentation identifies the third-generation Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet model as a Thread-enabled home hub option for Thread-enabled Matter accessories. Other supported options include HomePod mini and other compatible Thread border routers.
Do not assume that every third-generation Apple TV 4K includes Thread. The 64GB Wi-Fi model and the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model should be treated differently when smart-home networking is part of the purchase.

4. The price increase creates a difficult waiting decision
Apple’s reason for the reported price increase is not established by the available evidence. It could relate to pricing strategy, component or currency economics, inventory positioning, or preparation for a more differentiated successor, but none of those explanations should be stated as fact.
What is known is simpler: reported U.S. prices rose while consumers were still waiting for a replacement. That leaves buyers choosing among current full-price stock, discounted retailer inventory, official refurbished units, or waiting for an announcement that had not been made.
Which Apple TV 4K should you buy?
| Your situation | Most sensible approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need Apple services, AirPlay, or Apple Home immediately | Consider the current third-generation model, preferably at a discount or through official refurbished inventory. | The existing hardware provides the confirmed ecosystem features now. |
| You have strong Wi-Fi and do not need Thread or wired networking | Look at the 64GB Wi-Fi model. | It includes Wi-Fi 6 and avoids paying for Ethernet features you will not use. |
| You need wired networking, Thread, or more storage | Look at the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. | It adds Gigabit Ethernet, Thread networking, and 128GB of storage. |
| You are price-sensitive | Compare retailer discounts and Apple-certified refurbished stock. | The reported $199 starting price is high for a 2022-generation box. |
| You want the newest chip or newer wireless standards | Wait for an official announcement if your current setup can handle the delay. | Rumored upgrades are not confirmed, and buying on a rumor could leave you with the same older platform. |
| You need a streaming box immediately but do not use Apple services | Compare the Apple TV 4K with competing platforms before paying the premium. | The strongest justification for Apple TV is often ecosystem integration rather than basic 4K playback alone. |
Setup checklist and purchase cautions
- Confirm the configuration. Check whether the listing is the 64GB Wi-Fi model or the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. Do not assume that a third-party listing uses Apple’s naming consistently.
- Check the television and receiver. Apple TV 4K requires compatible television and content for 4K and HDR viewing. Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos availability depends on the complete equipment and content chain.
- Budget for an HDMI cable. Apple states that the cable is sold separately. Choose a cable appropriate for the television or receiver rather than assuming every setup needs the same specification.
- Choose Ethernet only when it solves a real need. The 128GB model is the one with Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. A wired connection can be useful for households with weak or congested Wi-Fi, while the Wi-Fi model is sufficient for buyers who do not need those features.
- Verify smart-home requirements. If Thread-enabled Matter accessories are central to the purchase, select the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model or confirm that another supported Thread border router is already present.
- Check the remote connection. The included Siri Remote uses USB-C for charging and can control a television or receiver through infrared or HDMI-CEC. A replacement remote is a separate purchase if the original is lost or damaged.
- Check price and warranty at checkout. The reported U.S. prices are time-sensitive. Refurbished and retailer inventory may differ in price, availability, included accessories, and warranty coverage.
The bottom line on Apple TV 2025
There was no confirmed Apple TV hardware launch in 2025. The product that remained current was Apple’s third-generation Apple TV 4K from 2022, with an A15 Bionic chip, 64GB or 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, 4K HDR output, Dolby Atmos, and Thread on the Ethernet configuration.

It remains a credible choice for people who want Apple’s services, AirPlay, Apple Home, or a Thread-capable home hub now. The reported increase to $199 for 64GB Wi-Fi and $249 for 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet makes full-price buying much harder to justify, though discounts and Apple-certified refurbished units may improve the value. Anyone mainly interested in a newer processor, next-generation wireless standards, or smarter Siri should wait for Apple to confirm those features rather than treating rumor coverage as a product announcement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was there an Apple TV 2025 launch?
No confirmed Apple TV hardware launched in 2025. Apple’s September 9, 2025 event did not include a new Apple TV announcement in its event materials. The current product at the research cutoff remained the third-generation Apple TV 4K introduced in 2022.
How much does the Apple TV 4K cost in the United States?
MacRumors reported in June 2026 that U.S. pricing had risen to $199 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model and $249 for the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. These figures are time-sensitive and should be verified before purchase.
Does every third-generation Apple TV 4K support Thread?
No. Apple associates Thread networking with the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The 64GB Wi-Fi model should not be treated as Thread-enabled based solely on its generation.

Wait if your priority is a newer chip, Wi-Fi 7 or 6GHz support, or smarter Siri, because those successor features and any release date were unconfirmed at the research cutoff.
Does the Apple TV 4K include an HDMI cable?
No. Apple states that an HDMI cable is sold separately. The appropriate cable depends on the television, receiver, and desired video formats.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple did not launch an Apple TV in 2025. The third-generation Apple TV 4K from 2022 remained the current model, but reported U.S. price increases weakened its value at full retail. Buy the existing model for Apple ecosystem and smart-home features you need now; otherwise, wait for an official successor announcement instead of buying on rumor.
