Apple News+ is a paid subscription layered onto Apple’s free News app. In the United States, Apple currently lists it at $12.99 per month after a one-month free trial. It combines access to a changing catalog of magazines and newspapers with selected narrated articles, daily puzzles, recipes and food coverage, Family Sharing, and offline access.
It is most worthwhile for people who regularly read several participating publications or share the subscription with family members. It is less compelling if you only want one newspaper or magazine, if your preferred titles are unavailable in your country, or if a direct subscription costs less.
What is Apple News+?
Apple News is the standard news-reading app available on supported Apple devices. Some stories and features are free, while others may be limited by the publisher. Apple News+ unlocks the premium subscription layer inside that same app.

- Hundreds of magazines and content from leading newspapers
- Selected professionally narrated audio stories
- Daily puzzles, including Crossword, Mini Crossword, Quartiles, and Sudoku
- Additional puzzle archives and, in supported locations, Emoji Game
- Apple News+ Food, with recipes and food-related coverage
- Offline reading and listening for selected downloaded or cached content
- Family Sharing for up to six people total
The exact catalog and feature set depend on your country or region, language, device, and operating-system version. Apple says that News, News+, puzzles, audio, and Apple One are not available everywhere.
Magazines and newspapers included with Apple News+
News+ provides access within the News app to magazine issues and articles from participating publishers. Apple’s publication directory has included titles such as TIME, People, Vanity Fair, WIRED, The New Yorker, Bon Appétit, Car and Driver, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Athletic, The Telegraph, and Le Monde.
That list is a snapshot, not a permanent guarantee. Publishers can join, leave, change their available content, or limit availability by region, so check Apple’s current publication directory before subscribing. Search for the publications you actually read rather than assuming that a familiar brand is included.
Recommended Free Tools
Important limitation: Apple News+ aggregates participating content inside News. It does not necessarily include every article, website feature, archive, subscriber benefit, or separate-app feature offered by a publisher. If you need a publication’s complete digital product, compare News+ with that publisher’s own subscription.
Audio stories: useful, but not every article is narrated
News+ subscribers can listen to selected articles that have been professionally narrated. This can be useful while commuting, walking, traveling, or doing work that makes reading impractical.
Do not expect a narrated version of every magazine article or newspaper story. Apple describes audio as a selection of available stories. Non-subscribers may also encounter shorter audio previews in some contexts, while full News+ audio programming is reserved for subscribers where available.

Apple News+ puzzles
Puzzles are one of the service’s more distinctive extras. Apple’s current lineup includes:
- Crossword
- Mini Crossword
- Quartiles
- Sudoku
- Emoji Game in the United States and Canada in English, where supported
Some puzzles offer access to archived games in addition to the daily versions. Apple says Emoji Game requires iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. Puzzle availability can vary by region and software version.
Puzzles should be treated as a meaningful bonus rather than the sole reason to subscribe unless you know you will use them regularly.
What is Apple News+ Food?
Apple News+ Food adds a substantial recipe and food-content section to the service. Apple announced tens of thousands of recipes along with restaurant coverage, healthy-eating stories, kitchen advice, and related material from participating publishers such as Allrecipes, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Good Food, and Serious Eats.
Food is particularly useful for households that already read food magazines or want recipes, magazine features, puzzles, and general news in one app. The recipe count and participating publishers may change, and the feature’s availability depends on region and supported software. Apple announced the Food feature for iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 in April 2025.

Offline Mode: what you can use without internet access
Apple News+ supports offline use. Depending on your device, region, and content type, News can download or automatically cache:
- Selected articles and stories
- Full magazine issues
- Selected audio stories
- Recipes
- Puzzles
This can help on flights, subways, road trips, and other journeys without reliable Wi-Fi or cellular service. Downloaded content refreshes when the device reconnects, and Apple says downloads are optimized to manage storage.

Offline access is not a promise that every item in the News+ catalog will remain available indefinitely. Download behavior and available content can vary, so prepare important reading before you lose connectivity and leave enough free storage on your device.
Compatible devices and software
Apple lists News and News+ for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You do not need to buy a new device to subscribe if you already own a compatible Apple product. Particular features—including puzzles, audio, Food, and offline downloads—can require a specific operating-system version or vary by device and location.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An iPad is an optional comfort upgrade, not a requirement. Its larger display can make full magazine layouts, recipes, puzzles, and downloaded reading easier to use than a phone. The current 11-inch iPad (A16) has an 11-inch Liquid Retina display, starts at 128GB of storage, uses Apple’s A16 chip, runs iPadOS 26, and supports Apple Pencil (USB-C).
If you are considering an iPad for Apple News+, buy it for the larger reading and recipe experience—not because News+ requires it. An iPhone or Mac you already own may be perfectly adequate. Apple Pencil is also optional and is not needed to read articles, solve puzzles, or use Food.
Family Sharing and household value
Apple says a News+ subscription can be shared with up to five other family members, for a total of six people in the Family Sharing group. Each person uses their own Apple Account and receives access without a separate News+ charge under the family arrangement.
This can materially improve the value of the subscription. For example, a household might justify the monthly cost more easily if one person reads magazines, another reads a newspaper, and others use puzzles, Food, or audio. Sharing rules still depend on Apple’s Family Sharing setup and the applicable regional terms.

Apple News+ versus Apple One Premier
Apple One Premier is the main bundle alternative. Where available, Apple includes News+ alongside other Apple services, and Apple says Family and Premier plans can be shared with up to five other family members.

| Choose… | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Standalone Apple News+ | You mainly want participating magazines and newspapers, puzzles, Food, narrated stories, and offline reading. |
| Apple One Premier | Your household already wants several of the other services in the bundle and the combined price is lower or more convenient than paying separately. |
Do not choose Premier solely to obtain News+ without checking the current price, included services, sharing rules, and availability in your region. Bundle prices and inclusions are commercial details that can change.
How to subscribe to Apple News+
- Open the News app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Open a News+ story or select the News+ section.
- Tap or click the subscription button shown by Apple.
- Sign in with your Apple Account if prompted.
- Review the price, trial length, renewal date, and terms before confirming.
The exact button placement can differ depending on the device and software version. Apple currently advertises a one-month free trial in the United States, but trial eligibility, offers, and regional pricing can differ.
Set a reminder before starting the trial. Subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled. Apple’s Media Services terms advise users who do not want a free trial to renew to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Check the confirmation screen and receipt for the precise renewal date.
How to cancel Apple News+
On iPhone, Apple’s current News-app cancellation path is:
- Open News.
- Tap Following.
- Scroll to Subscriptions under Manage.
- Select Apple News+.
- Follow the cancellation instructions shown on screen.
If your News+ access comes through Apple One Premier, manage the Apple One subscription instead of trying to cancel News+ as an independent subscription.
Cancellation and refunds are separate questions. Canceling stops future renewal according to Apple’s subscription rules, but it does not automatically guarantee a refund. Refund eligibility can depend on Apple’s terms, local law, and the circumstances of the purchase. Check your subscription screen and receipt for the effective end date.
Privacy and personalization
Apple says News uses on-device intelligence to recommend stories and says it does not share users’ reading information with others or allow advertisers to track them as described on its News+ product page.

Apple’s separate News privacy documentation says publication subscriptions can be recognized through Apple Account or App Store subscription information. Direct subscriptions purchased from publishers may involve publisher verification or optional information sharing. The practical distinction is important: Apple News+ access is handled through Apple’s subscription system, while a direct publisher subscription may be governed by that publisher’s own account and privacy practices.
These are Apple’s stated practices, not an independent privacy audit. Read the relevant publisher’s terms if you connect a direct publication account or use a publisher-specific feature.
Who should subscribe?
Apple News+ is a strong candidate if you:
- Regularly read several magazines or newspapers in Apple’s current directory
- Want one app for written stories and selected narrated audio
- Will use the daily puzzles or Food section
- Need to prepare reading, recipes, or audio for travel without internet access
- Can share the subscription with several members of your household
It may not be good value if you:
- Read only one publication and its direct subscription is cheaper
- Need a publication’s entire website, archive, app, or subscriber benefits
- Live in a region where News+ or your preferred publications are unavailable
- Do not use magazines, puzzles, Food, audio, or offline reading
A practical value check before the free trial
- List the publications you actually read. Do not count titles you might read someday.
- Check Apple’s current publication directory. Confirm both the title and your regional availability.
- Count likely household users. Family Sharing can change the calculation substantially.
- Value the extras honestly. Decide whether puzzles, Food, audio, and offline access solve real problems for you.
- Compare direct subscriptions. One publication may be cheaper to buy directly, especially if you need its full website or archive.
- Compare Apple One Premier only if you want its other services. A bundle is not automatically cheaper for a News+-only reader.
- Confirm compatibility and the renewal date. Check your region, device, software version, trial terms, and receipt before completing signup.
Bottom line
Apple News+ is best understood as a convenient shared reading bundle, not as a universal replacement for every newspaper or magazine subscription. Its strongest value comes from combining several participating publications with puzzles, Food, selected audio, and offline access—especially when up to six family members can use it. Check the current catalog and regional terms first, and compare the total value with direct subscriptions and Apple One Premier before the trial converts to a paid plan.

What is Apple News+?
Apple News+ is a paid subscription inside Apple’s News app. In the United States, Apple currently lists it at $12.99 per month after a one-month free trial. It includes participating magazines and newspapers plus selected audio stories, puzzles, Food content, offline access, and Family Sharing.
Can Apple News+ be shared with family?
Apple News+ can be shared with up to five other family members through Family Sharing, for six people total. Each person uses their own Apple Account under the family arrangement.
Does Apple News+ include audio for every article?
No. News+ offers selected professionally narrated stories, not audio versions of every article. Availability also varies by region, device, and software version.
How do I cancel Apple News+?
Open News, tap Following, scroll to Subscriptions under Manage, select Apple News+, and follow the cancellation instructions. If News+ is included through Apple One Premier, manage the Apple One subscription instead.
Do I need an iPad to use Apple News+?
No. Apple News+ works on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. An iPad may be more comfortable for magazine layouts, recipes, puzzles, and offline reading, but it is an optional device upgrade.
The Bottom Line
Apple News+ is worth considering when you read several participating publications or can share it with family. Its additional value comes from selected audio stories, puzzles, Food, and offline access. It is not necessarily a replacement for a publisher’s complete subscription, and availability varies by country, device, and software version.
