But a prettier, more immersive interface does not make it the better service for everyone: Spotify still has the edge in multi-device control, social listening and discovery. If you mostly listen on Apple devices and want a library that feels personal, Apple Music is worth a fresh look. If you rely on Spotify Connect or friends’ playlists, the glow-up alone is not a reason to switch.
What changed in Apple Music?
“Glow-up” covers a mix of visual changes and listening tools, not one single redesign. Some features arrived with the iOS 26-era updates announced by Apple in June 2025; others were announced for iOS 27 in June 2026 and were described as coming in autumn. Those later features should not be treated as available to every subscriber: check the public release, device and region before relying on them.
Albums, playlists and artists get more visual space
Recent Apple Music screens put more emphasis on album and playlist artwork, using artwork-derived colors around the tracklist. Artist pages also give playback and information controls a more prominent place. The result can feel more like entering a record’s visual world and less like scanning a dense menu. TechRadar reported these interface changes in its coverage of the iOS 26.4-era rollout; appearance and availability can differ by app version and platform. TechRadar’s report on the redesign
Apple’s June 2026 announcement also describes redesigned artist pages and performance improvements for iOS 27. These are announced changes, not a guarantee that the same layout or speed is present across iPhone, Mac, Android, Apple TV and the web. Apple’s iOS 27 announcement

Pinned items make a personal library easier to reach
Apple Music lets listeners pin favorite albums, playlists and artists so they stay near the top of the library. That is a modest interface feature with a useful payoff if you regularly return to the same collection instead of starting from a recommendation feed. Apple’s guide documents pinning alongside other Music features. Apple Music User Guide
AutoMix aims for tailored transitions
Crossfade overlaps the end of one song with the start of another for a chosen duration. AutoMix instead analyzes tracks and uses beat matching and time stretching to shape transitions around the music. Apple presents it as a DJ-like listening feature; it is automated transition technology, not a full DJ system with manual cueing or mixing controls. Apple’s 2025 Apple-services announcement
It can suit a workout, party or playlist meant to keep moving. It can also interrupt an album whose silence, ending or track order is intentional. Apple announced improved AutoMix transitions and expanded availability for HomePod and tvOS in its June 2026 iOS 27 announcement; check the software version and device before assuming those additions are live. Lyrics can help with unfamiliar languages
For supported songs and languages, Apple Music offers lyric translation and pronunciation assistance. Translation can make a song easier to follow; pronunciation can help listeners attempt the words. Coverage depends on the track and language pairing, and a convenience translation should not be treated as an authoritative rendering of a lyric. Apple says its translation feature combines machine learning with refinement by language experts. Apple’s 2025 announcement Apple Music User Guide

Why the new look can feel better than Spotify’s
Apple Music’s strongest design argument is focus. Artwork-led pages, a clearer route into a personal library and more prominent artist controls make the service feel oriented around listening to a record or returning to a chosen collection. Spotify often puts more kinds of content and recommendations in view at once. That density can be useful when you want options; it can also make the experience feel busier if you simply want to find an album and press play.
This is a judgment about hierarchy, not proof that one interface is universally easier. A spacious screen may expose fewer choices at a glance. A colorful background may make a page feel cohesive while reducing the contrast of text or controls. TechRadar reported user complaints about readability and accessibility in the redesigned presentation; that criticism is not an Apple admission, but it is a reason to assess the app with your own display settings and assistive technology. Moving playback between devices
Spotify Connect lets a listener use one device to control playback on another compatible device. That is useful when music starts on a phone and needs to move to a computer, speaker, TV or console without rebuilding the queue or reconnecting Bluetooth. Apple offers AirPlay, Handoff, HomePod control and device-specific integrations, but those are not one universal equivalent to Spotify Connect across all hardware. The practical difference is largest in mixed-device households and for people who switch playback destinations often. TechRadar on Apple Music’s continuity gap

Social discovery and collaboration
Spotify’s friend activity, collaborative playlists and established public-playlist culture make it easier to treat music as something shared. Apple Music may suit a listener who wants a more private, library-centered experience, but it is less compelling when recommendations come from friends, group playlists or online communities.
Discovery and existing listening history
Spotify has a strong personalized discovery experience, and years of saved playlists and listening signals have practical value. A switch can mean more than moving favorite tracks: playlist order, collaboration, local files and recommendation history may not transfer cleanly. Apple Music recommendations may also need time to reflect a new subscriber’s habits.
Platform consistency
Apple Music’s interface and feature set can vary among iOS, macOS, Android, tvOS, HomePod and the web. A feature shown on an iPhone is not evidence that it is available on a Mac or another device at the same time. TechRadar has noted inconsistencies between Apple Music versions, including features missing from the Mac app. TechRadar on feature and platform gaps

Check accessibility, not just aesthetics
An artwork-driven page can look polished and still be harder to use for someone who needs larger text, stronger contrast or predictable control placement. Before deciding that the redesign works for you, check whether track titles remain legible over artwork, whether controls are easy to locate, and whether the experience remains comfortable in light and dark modes. If you use VoiceOver or other accessibility settings, test those workflows directly rather than assuming the visual redesign helps or harms them.
- Try larger text and check whether titles or controls are clipped or crowded.
- Use increased contrast or reduced transparency if available in your device’s accessibility settings.
- Check VoiceOver labels and the order in which playback controls are reached.
- Test motion-sensitive settings and both light and dark appearances.
These checks matter because the default visual treatment is not the only way people use the app. The reported readability concerns are a prompt to test, not a conclusion that Apple Music is inaccessible for everyone. TechRadar’s report on readability concerns
Which service fits which listener?
| Listener priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Album-first listening and a personal collection | Apple Music | Artwork-led pages and pinned albums, artists and playlists emphasize deliberate library browsing. |
| Playlists built with friends | Spotify | Its collaborative and social listening features are a stronger part of the experience. |
| Frequent device switching | Spotify | Spotify Connect is designed for controlling playback across compatible devices. |
| Apple-device household | Apple Music | Apple’s services and hardware integrations may make it a more coherent fit, depending on the devices and features used. |
| Mixed hardware or broad device neutrality | Spotify | Apple Music features and presentation vary by platform; Spotify’s device-control approach is a strong advantage for mixed setups. |
| Lyric translation or pronunciation | Apple Music, if supported | It offers these tools for supported songs and languages; coverage is not universal. |
| Continuous playlist listening | Apple Music, if AutoMix suits the music | AutoMix creates adaptive transitions, but can be wrong for deliberate album sequencing or awkward song pairings. |
| Lossless listening | Depends on the listening setup | Apple positions its service around lossless audio, but audible differences depend on source, equipment and listening conditions; ordinary Bluetooth may limit the benefit. |
Should you switch from Spotify?
Try Apple Music if the library is the point
Apple Music is worth a trial if you mostly use Apple devices, care about album presentation, want a library-first workflow, or expect to use lyric tools and AutoMix. Those advantages are strongest when the new design makes finding and returning to music more pleasant in your day-to-day use.
Stay with Spotify if the platform is the point
Keep Spotify if Connect is part of your routine, you share playlists, rely on friend-driven discovery, or have a large playlist and recommendation history you do not want to disrupt. The redesign does not replace those habits.
Use both while testing the trade-off
If you are curious, try Apple Music before canceling Spotify. Test a normal week of listening: open albums, queue songs, move playback to your usual speakers, and see whether recommendations improve as you listen. If you migrate playlists, check ordering, artwork, collaborative status and unsupported tracks rather than assuming every detail will carry over. Subscription offers and plan eligibility vary by country, account and date, so check the current terms before signing up.
What Spotify could borrow
- A clearer album hierarchy: Keep play, save, download, queue and tracklist actions easy to find while giving the album artwork room to matter.
- Artwork-aware pages with stable contrast: Color can make screens feel distinctive without making text harder to scan.
- A customizable pinned area: Let listeners keep favorite albums, artists and playlists at the top of their own library.
- Adaptive transitions with an album-aware option: Offer a flowing mix for playlists without imposing it on records built around silence and sequencing.
- More complete multilingual lyrics: Translation and pronunciation can make music from unfamiliar languages more welcoming, when coverage is clear and reliable.
- Less competition for attention: Separate music discovery from other content so the listener can choose how much of the service’s broader feed to engage with.
These are design priorities, not claims that Spotify has no related features. Apple Music’s more deliberate presentation is most persuasive when it improves a real task without sacrificing the readability, flexibility and device control that listeners need.
