Apple Music: Plans, Features, Audio Quality, and Complete Setup Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Music is a paid, ad-free streaming service with more than 100 million songs, offline listening, personalized recommendations, radio, lyrics, lossless audio, and Dolby Atmos on supported tracks. In the United States, the Individual plan is listed at $11.99 per month after its introductory offer, and the Family plan is $19.99 per month for up to six people total; prices and promotions can change. It works on Apple devices as well as Android, Windows, the web, smart TVs, speakers, and consoles. It is a strong fit for Apple households, classical listeners, and people who want lossless audio included, but there is no general permanent free tier and subscription downloads are not permanent purchases.

What Apple Music is—and what it is not

Apple Music is a subscription service for streaming music on demand. A subscription provides access to a catalog Apple describes as containing more than 100 million songs, alongside playlists, personalized recommendations, radio, lyrics, music videos, artist content, and offline listening. Catalog availability can vary by region and change over time. Apple’s Apple Music page lists its current features and supported devices.

The Music app is the player and library interface; Apple Music is the subscription service accessed through it. The iTunes Store is different: it sells music you can buy and keep. Adding a subscription track to your library or downloading it for offline playback does not make it yours. If the subscription ends, Apple Music catalog tracks stop playing, while music purchased from the iTunes Store remains available. Personal music files stored on a computer are also distinct from subscription tracks. Apple explains what changes when a subscription ends.

Apple One is a bundle that can include Apple Music with other Apple services; it is not a separate music tier. Sync Library makes a library available across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, but it is not a backup. Apple Music Classical is a separate app and web experience for classical music, included with qualifying Apple Music subscriptions.

Plans, prices, trials, and the free option

The following are U.S. price signals displayed on Apple’s public Apple Music page on August 16–18, 2026. Prices and offers vary by country, eligibility, and date; check the live signup page before subscribing.

Plan U.S. price signal Best for
Individual $11.99 per month after the displayed introductory offer One person
Family $19.99 per month Up to six people total: the subscriber and up to five others
Student Discounted pricing is available; verify the current checkout price and eligibility Eligible college or university students
Apple One Bundle containing Apple Music and other Apple services; check the current local price People who already pay for multiple Apple services

Apple’s page also showed introductory offers of three months for $1.99 for new Individual subscribers and three months for $4.99 for new Family subscribers on those dates. Those are limited-time promotions, not regular plan prices; eligibility and availability can change. A trial or promotion is temporary access, not a permanent free plan, and generally converts to paid billing unless canceled before renewal. Check Apple’s current offer and terms.

There is no general permanent, ad-supported Apple Music tier shown on Apple’s current U.S. product page. Depending on availability, people may still encounter trials, previews, radio, or partner promotions without a full subscription; these do not provide the same ongoing on-demand access as a paid plan. For subscription options and enrollment, see Apple’s subscription guide.

What you get with a subscription

  • On-demand listening: Search for songs, albums, artists, composers, playlists, and radio stations, then play available catalog music without ads.
  • Library and playlists: Save music to your library, make playlists, organize a queue, and use Autoplay to continue with related music.
  • Discovery and artist features: Get personalized recommendations, follow artists, explore stations, and find artist content and music videos.
  • Lyrics and sharing: View time-synced lyrics where available and share songs or playlists.
  • Offline access: Download catalog music in a supported app for listening without a connection, while the subscription remains active.
  • Higher-quality formats: Lossless audio and Dolby Atmos are available on supported content and playback setups without a separate higher-priced audio tier.

Apple’s support index covers tasks such as lyrics, queue management, Autoplay, web listening, downloads, and Spatial Audio: Apple Music support.

Third-party availability and feature support depend on device, app, operating-system version, country, and hardware. Being able to play music on a platform does not mean every feature is present there.

Feature availability can change as apps and operating systems are updated. Apple’s platform list is at apple.com/apple-music.

Subscribe and get started

  1. Open the Apple Music app on a supported device or go to Apple Music on the web.
  2. Choose the subscription or eligible trial offer, then select Individual, Family, or Student.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account you intend to use for purchases and your music library.
  4. Confirm a valid payment method and any required student eligibility verification.
  5. Confirm the subscription, then search for music and add items to your library or playlists.

On iPhone, subscription access is available through the Music app; Apple also documents Settings > Apps > Music for Music settings and subscription access. Labels can vary by software release. If you already have personal music files, keep a separate backup before changing library-sync settings.

Build a library, manage playback, and download music

Find and save music

Use Search to find a song, album, artist, composer, playlist, or station. Add an item to your library when you want it grouped with your saved music; create playlists for listening sessions or moods. You can edit playlists, add songs to the queue, use Autoplay, favorite music or indicate that you want less of it, follow artists, view available lyrics, and share songs or playlists. Siri and playback controls on supported devices can also help manage listening.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Download for offline listening

  1. Add the song, album, or playlist to your library if needed.
  2. Tap or click its download control in a supported app.
  3. Check the app’s downloaded or offline music area to confirm the item is available.
  4. Prefer Wi-Fi for large downloads, and review download and storage settings if space or mobile data is limited.
  5. Before travel, test a downloaded playlist with the device offline.

Lossless downloads take more storage than standard AAC downloads. Offline files remain subscription-controlled: they do not become permanent music purchases and will stop playing as Apple Music content if the subscription expires.

Sync Library: access across devices without treating it as a backup

Sync Library shares your Apple Music library across devices using the same Apple Account. It requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. Personal files may be matched to catalog items or uploaded, while the library can also contain Apple Music catalog tracks. Apple documents a cloud-library limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding iTunes Store purchases, and a 200 MB maximum file size. Sync behavior can differ from a conventional file backup; preserve original music files separately. Apple’s Windows guide describes Sync Library and its limits.

Turn on Sync Library

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings > Apps > Music > turn on Sync Library.
  • Mac: Open Music, verify the Apple Account, choose Music > Settings > General, then select Sync Library.
  • Windows: Open the Apple Music app, verify the Apple Account, open its settings, and enable Sync Library.

Wait for the cloud library to update. Exact labels can vary with software versions. Apple’s device instructions are available for iPhone and iPad, Mac, and Windows.

Recover a missing or grayed-out song

  1. Check that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account and that Sync Library is enabled on each one.
  2. Confirm the devices have an internet connection and update the Apple Music app and operating system if updates are available.
  3. On the Mac or Windows PC that holds the source library, update the cloud library and check the cloud status of local tracks.
  4. Check whether the track was removed from the catalog, restricted by explicit-content settings, purchased under another Apple Account, or made unavailable in your region.
  5. If a catalog track is marked unavailable, remove it and add it again if it is still in the catalog.
  6. Only then consider turning Sync Library off and back on. This can remove downloaded music from devices; first ensure a reliable network connection and preserve originals separately.

Larger libraries may take longer to synchronize. Apple’s troubleshooting steps for unavailable or grayed-out items are at support.apple.com/en-tj/118287.

Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless: what they mean in practice

Apple defines Lossless as audio up to 48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless as above 48 kHz and up to 192 kHz. Lossless preserves audio data rather than using the lossy compression of standard AAC, but that does not guarantee an audible improvement for every listener. The recording and mastering, playback chain, listening environment, and individual hearing all matter. Apple says lossless versions are available across its catalog, but do not assume every song or version is offered in every format. Apple’s audio details and settings describe the formats.

  • Data and storage: Lossless streaming and downloads use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC. It may be impractical to stream lossless over a limited mobile plan or download an entire library in that format.
  • Connection and hardware: A Bluetooth connection involves its own codec and transmission limits; a Bluetooth label does not establish bit-perfect Hi-Res playback. Wired playback may still require a compatible DAC for higher resolutions.
  • Resolution is not a quality guarantee: Hi-Res is not automatically better than ordinary Lossless, and higher resolution cannot repair poor mastering.
  • Settings are only part of the chain: Output device, app, operating system, connection, and hardware all affect what reaches your headphones or speakers.

Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio

Dolby Atmos is an immersive mix format, not a synonym for lossless or simply a higher-resolution stereo file. Only supported tracks have Atmos mixes, and a track’s Atmos version can sound different from its stereo mix because it is a different mix. Some listeners prefer stereo; results depend on the mix and playback equipment. Compare both at similar volume rather than assuming Atmos is always better.

Apple says Atmos plays automatically with compatible Apple or Beats headphones. For other headphones, its documented path is Settings > Music > Audio > Dolby Atmos > Always On. Compatible built-in speakers and Apple TV audio systems may also support Atmos under specified conditions. Head tracking and other Spatial Audio behavior depend on the device and headphones. Atmos downloads may use additional storage, and not every playback setup supports the feature. Check Apple’s current compatibility details.

Choose audio settings for your situation

  • Most listeners: Keep Lossless off unless you have a reason to use it; choose High Quality for cellular streaming. With compatible Apple or Beats headphones, Dolby Atmos can remain on Automatic.
  • Travel: Download playlists over Wi-Fi, use standard quality to save space, and test offline playback before leaving. Download selected lossless albums only if storage allows.
  • Wired headphones: Enable Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless only after checking the capabilities of the device, cable, and any DAC in the full playback chain.
  • Limited data or storage: Avoid cellular lossless streaming and automatic downloads; use Wi-Fi and review the app’s storage settings.

Apple Music Classical

Apple Music Classical is included at no additional charge with Individual, Student, and Family Apple Music subscriptions. It is a separate app and web experience, not a replacement for the general Music app: its focus is classical music, with search and metadata designed for composers, works, conductors, orchestras, soloists, ensembles, and musical periods. It shares a library with Apple Music and supports online and offline listening. Apple Music Classical’s product page describes its features.

Apple 2021 Apple TV 4K 32GB - Black (2nd generation) (Renewed)
  • Dolby Atmos for immersive, room-filling sound - 4K High Frame Rate HDR with Dolby Vision for fluid, crisp video

  • More ways to enjoy your TV with Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, and Apple Music - Private listening using up to two sets of AirPods

Apple lists requirements of iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later for the iPhone and iPad app, and Android 6 or later for Android. The service is also available on the web. Selected content offers Dolby Atmos, and available audio can reach 24-bit/192 kHz Hi-Res Lossless; not every recording is offered in every format. Classical is the app’s focus, so use the general Apple Music experience for pop, rock, hip-hop, and other non-classical listening.

Family Sharing and the student plan

Family subscription

The Family plan covers the organizer plus up to five other people, six total. Each member should use a separate Apple Account and gets an individual library and recommendations; sharing one login is not the same as setting up Family Sharing. The organizer must have a Family subscription or a qualifying Apple One family bundle and configure Family Sharing. Country or region restrictions can affect services and shared purchases. Parents can use Family Sharing’s available content and purchase controls. Apple documents Family Sharing and the Mac upgrade path.

Student subscription

The Student plan is for eligible college or university students and may require verification. Eligibility, verification rules, and price are not established as a single permanent offer; check the current signup flow for your country rather than relying on an old price. See Apple’s subscription information.

Cancel Apple Music and know what changes

If Apple bills the subscription through the web, Apple documents this path: go to music.apple.com, sign in if necessary, open My Account, choose Settings, scroll to Subscriptions, choose Manage, then Cancel Subscription. If billing is through Google Play, cancel through Google Play or the Apple Music Android app. Bundled or other third-party billing may require cancellation through the service that bills you. Apple advises canceling at least one day before renewal when applicable to avoid the next charge. Cancellation instructions and subscription consequences and Apple’s billing guidance provide details.

Choosing Apple Music over another service

Consider the experience you value most rather than assuming one service wins for everyone. These are comparison categories, not claims about current prices, catalogs, or feature availability.

If your priority is… Consider Why it may suit you
Apple-device integration, lossless included, or classical search Apple Music Strong Apple hardware integration, included lossless formats, and a dedicated Classical experience.
Discovery, playlists, and social sharing Spotify Often considered by listeners who value discovery and playlist culture.
Music videos, unofficial uploads, and YouTube integration YouTube Music May suit people who rely on YouTube’s broader video ecosystem.
Alexa and Amazon ecosystem or an existing Prime relationship Amazon Music Relevant for households already invested in Amazon devices and services.
High-quality audio positioning Tidal A comparison candidate for listeners focused on audio quality and artist-oriented positioning.
Hi-res listening and music purchasing Qobuz Relevant where available to listeners who prioritize hi-res and buying or downloading music.

Check each service’s current plan, regional availability, audio formats, and feature terms before switching. Apple Music may be a weaker fit if your main needs are a permanent free tier, ownership of everything you download, or a rival service’s specific social, podcast, audiobook, or discovery features.

Who should choose Apple Music?

  • Apple households: A natural candidate if you use Apple devices, CarPlay, HomePod, Apple Watch, or Siri and value integrated playback.
  • Classical listeners: Worth considering if composer- and work-based search and the separate Classical experience matter to you.
  • Lossless listeners: Attractive if you have compatible wired equipment and want lossless options without a separate premium audio tier; check the full playback chain before expecting Hi-Res output.
  • Android and Windows users: You can use the service without an iPhone, though app features and interface may differ from Apple devices.
  • Free-tier seekers or music owners: Look elsewhere if you need permanent free on-demand listening or want subscription downloads to become files you own.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
