Apple is still carrying Major League Baseball in 2026. Its Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders returned on March 27 for a fifth season, despite an August 2025 report suggesting Apple might opt out of its existing deal. What changed is the wider rights picture: Apple kept its Friday package but did not land the larger Sunday-night and postseason rights it was reportedly pursuing.
What the August 2025 report got right—and what it didn’t
When BGR published its report on August 20, 2025, MLB’s national media rights were in flux. Apple was reportedly interested in adding more valuable inventory, including Sunday-night games and playoff coverage, while reports raised the possibility that it could leave its existing Friday Night Baseball arrangement early. The distinction matters. Apple’s pursuit of additional MLB rights and its existing Friday-night deal were separate questions. The broader expansion did not materialize in the way Apple was reportedly seeking; the existing package survived. MLB’s subsequent announcement of new agreements for the 2026–2028 seasons explicitly said Apple TV would continue streaming Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders during the regular season. So the 2025 story was premature if read as an announcement that Apple was leaving MLB. A more accurate reading is that Apple’s bid to broaden its baseball role appeared to be ending, while its Friday-night presence remained.

Where MLB’s national rights went for 2026–2028
MLB reorganized much of its national programming across several partners. Apple is one part of that map, not the sole home of the league—and no single service should be assumed to carry every game.

Apple’s actual MLB role in 2026
Friday Night Baseball returned March 27, 2026, for its fifth season. Apple and MLB continue to offer a weekly Friday-night doubleheader package through Apple TV. Those offerings went to other partners. Apple’s Friday games are exclusive to Apple TV in the relevant markets, so fans should check the official schedule and local availability rather than assume that an Apple subscription includes other national or local MLB broadcasts.
What fans need to watch different kinds of games
- Friday-night national doubleheaders: Apple TV.
- Sunday Night Baseball or Sunday Leadoff: NBC or Peacock, depending on the broadcast and availability.
- Out-of-market regular-season games: MLB.TV through ESPN is the relevant option under the 2026 arrangement. MLB describes access to more than 2,000 games in its MLB.TV and ESPN FAQ.
- Home Run Derby and selected special events: Netflix carries these event-based broadcasts; it is not a replacement for a full MLB schedule. See MLB’s Derby information.
- Other nationally televised games: Check FOX/FS1, TBS, ESPN, and MLB Network schedules.
- A local team’s games: The team’s regional broadcaster or local provider may be more important than any national streaming service.
These are separate rights, and access can depend on location. National exclusivity, out-of-market streaming, and local broadcasts are not interchangeable: MLB.TV does not guarantee access to every game everywhere, and regional blackouts or other restrictions may apply. International availability can differ as well. Consult MLB’s current viewing guide for the relevant team and market before subscribing.

There is no simple public scorecard in the cited announcements. The sources do not provide a comprehensive, independently verifiable audience figure for Friday Night Baseball, so claims that the package failed, had poor ratings, or made no difference to Apple’s business would go beyond the available evidence.

On the evidence that is available, the result is mixed. Apple maintained a recognizable weekly baseball property into a fifth season, which shows that the partnership continued. But it did not turn that foothold into the broader Sunday and playoff presence reportedly under consideration. That makes “scaled back” or “contained” a more defensible description of Apple’s MLB role than “over.”

Following only Friday games may require Apple TV; Sunday games, out-of-market coverage, marquee events, and local broadcasts can involve different services or providers. Apple remains part of the MLB picture, but it is only one piece of it.
