Apple Cider Vinegar and The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist are two different Netflix productions about the Belle Gibson scandal: one is a fictionalized drama, the other a documentary. The drama draws on real events, but Netflix describes it as a “true-ish story, based on a lie”—not a documentary account in which every scene or character can be treated as fact.
How are the two Netflix productions different?
| Production | Format | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Cider Vinegar | Six-episode drama | A fictionalized interpretation inspired by the Belle Gibson scandal. |
| The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist | Documentary | An investigation focused on Gibson. |
Netflix’s pages distinguish the scripted series from the documentary. The phrase “Instagram’s Worst Con Artist” is the documentary’s title; it is not proof of an independently verified ranking of con artists. Netflix Tudum’s explanation of the drama and Netflix’s listing identify the two productions. Catalog availability may vary by region.
Is Apple Cider Vinegar a true story?
It is based on the real Belle Gibson scandal, but it is dramatized. Netflix calls the series a “true-ish story, based on a lie,” a description that captures both its real-world foundation and its fictionalized form. That framing does not establish that each scene, character, or interaction corresponds to a documented event or person. Netflix Tudum says the series draws on The Woman Who Fooled the World, the nonfiction book by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano.
For a factual account of the scandal, the book is a relevant next read. For events beyond the series’ ending, ABC News’ February 12, 2025 report addresses what the drama leaves out and what happened afterward. Treat the series as an interpretation, and use reporting to distinguish dramatized scenes from real-world developments.

What does the documentary cover?
The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist is a separate documentary focused on Gibson, rather than another name for Apple Cider Vinegar. Its title should not be read as a factual comparison establishing that Gibson was worse than every other con artist. Netflix Tudum’s page about the documentary and Netflix’s listing provide the official identification of the production.
What happened after the events depicted?
The drama does not cover every later development in the real case. ABC News published an update on Gibson’s circumstances on February 12, 2025. Separately, the Associated Press reported on February 21, 2025 that Australian authorities were still pursuing unpaid fines and that a 2017 Federal Court order imposed A$410,000 in penalties. That legal detail is secondary reporting; the available reporting does not establish the present collection status. Associated Press report.
