House of the Dragon focuses on one devastating chapter in Targaryen history: the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The family’s story begins long before that conflict and continues for generations after it. The dates below follow the fictional in-world chronology summarized by A Wiki of Ice and Fire; they are not a precise episode-by-episode calendar for HBO’s adaptation.

In this chronology, AC means “After Conquest,” counting from Aegon the Conqueror’s coronation in 1 AC. BC counts backward from that point. Aegon began his invasion before the calendar’s starting point: the Conquest started in 2 BC and concluded with his coronation in 1 AC.

Before Aegon’s Conquest: the Targaryens leave Valyria

114 BC: the family moves to Dragonstone

In 114 BC, Aenar Targaryen moved his family and five dragons from Valyria to Dragonstone. The move followed a prophetic vision experienced by his daughter Daenys. The Targaryens were thus away from Valyria before its destruction.

About 102 BC: the Doom of Valyria

A Wiki of Ice and Fire places the Doom twelve years after Aenar’s move. That makes 102 BC a calculation from the source’s interval, rather than a separately stated date. The Doom destroyed Valyria, and the Targaryens were the only dragonlords to survive. In the Century of Blood that followed, Aegon Targaryen turned his attention toward Westeros.

2 BC–48 AC: conquest, the first kings, and the succession to Jaehaerys

2 BC–1 AC: Aegon’s Conquest

Aegon began the Conquest in 2 BC, accompanied by his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys and their dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. The campaign began at the Blackwater and lasted two years, ending when the High Septon anointed Aegon at Oldtown. That coronation in 1 AC became the calendar’s reference point. Dorne resisted and was not brought under Aegon’s rule during the initial campaign.

Aegon forged the Iron Throne from the weapons of defeated enemies. His rule established the Targaryen dynasty, which would remain in power for nearly three centuries.

2–13 AC: the Dragon’s Wars

The Conquest did not end every campaign to extend Targaryen power. The Dragon’s Wars continued from 2 to 13 AC, including an invasion of the Iron Islands and the first Targaryen invasion of Dorne. Dorne’s resistance is one reason not to treat the initial Conquest as the moment Westeros was uniformly united under Aegon.

41–48 AC: Aenys, Maegor, and Jaehaerys

Aenys I succeeded Aegon in 41 AC. The Faith Militant uprising and Aenys’s death were followed by Maegor taking the throne ahead of nearer heirs. Maegor used brutal force to suppress opposition. Jaehaerys I acceded in 48 AC, beginning a long reign associated with a prolonged period of peace.

101 AC: a Great Council chooses Viserys

After Jaehaerys’s son Baelon died, the succession was contested. A Great Council in 101 AC chose Viserys over Laenor Velaryon as the heir. That decision precedes the conflict at the center of House of the Dragon: Viserys’s own succession would later be disputed.

106–129 AC: events that lead toward the Dance

106–115 AC: the Stepstones campaign

Daemon Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon fought for control of the Stepstones between 106 and 115 AC. Daemon later abandoned his claim there. The campaign belongs to the wider political history around the royal family, rather than being the Dance itself.

120 AC: family tragedies deepen the divisions

The chronology marks several events in 120 AC as shaping what followed: the deaths of Laena and Laenor Velaryon, Aemond losing an eye, and the fire at Harrenhal. These losses and injuries belong to the family history that precedes the succession crisis.

111 AC: the origins of “blacks” and “greens”

The faction names used in the later war came from a tourney in 111 AC. Rhaenyra wore black and red; Alicent wore green. The names eventually identified the supporters of Rhaenyra and Aegon II, respectively.

129–131 AC: the Dance of the Dragons

129 AC: the succession dispute becomes civil war

When Viserys I’s succession was challenged, his daughter Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon II became rival claimants to the throne. Rhaenyra’s supporters were called the blacks, and Aegon II’s the greens. The Dance was therefore a struggle over legitimate succession and political power, not simply a series of battles between dragons.

129–131 AC: both rival monarchs die

The civil war ran from 129 to 131 AC. It consumed both Rhaenyra and Aegon II, much of the Targaryen family, and most of the remaining dragons. Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III was crowned after the conflict. The detailed dates here are the published in-world chronology as summarized by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, a fan-maintained reference, rather than a guarantee that every adaptation event falls on the same date.

131–171 AC: rule after the Dance and the dwindling of dragons

131–136 AC: Aegon III’s minority

Aegon III’s early reign was governed by a council of regents. Political instability, winter, disease, and continued conflict marked the period. The change of monarch did not immediately end the disorder left by the war.

153 AC: the last living dragon dies

The last living dragon died in 153 AC during Aegon III’s reign, after repeated attempts to restore the dragons. Targaryen rule continued long after the dragons disappeared; the dynasty’s political survival and its dragons’ survival are separate parts of the timeline.

171 AC: the Dance’s legacy shapes another succession

Baelor I’s death in 171 AC reopened the question of who could inherit. Some argued for his sister Daena, while others recalled the consequences of Rhaenyra’s claim. The succession debate shows that the Dance remained a political precedent decades after its end.

196 AC onward: rebellion and the fall of Targaryen rule

196 AC: the First Blackfyre Rebellion

Daemon Blackfyre’s claim triggered the First Blackfyre Rebellion in 196 AC, another major Targaryen civil war. It was a later dynastic conflict, distinct from the Dance but part of the family’s continuing succession struggles.

259 AC: tragedy at Summerhall

Aegon V and his son Duncan died at Summerhall in 259 AC during an unsuccessful attempt to hatch dragon eggs. The attempt did not restore the dragons, whose last known survivor had died more than a century earlier.

Aerys II and Robert’s Rebellion: the dynasty ends

In the late Targaryen period, Robert’s Rebellion deposed Aerys II, the Mad King, ending Targaryen rule. The chronology summarized here does not establish a precise date sequence for the rebellion, so it is best placed broadly in the dynasty’s final era rather than assigned a year here.

How the show’s timeline relates to Targaryen history

HBO describes House of the Dragon as “Based on George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood,’ House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.” That is series-level framing, not an exact date for every episode. The show adapts part of Fire & Blood, while the larger Targaryen chronology begins before the Conquest and continues well beyond the Dance.

Book chronology and television chronology should not be silently combined. GamesRadar+ notes that the show’s timeline differs somewhat from Fire & Blood. For dated milestones in the family history, the years in this guide refer to the in-world chronology; the HBO “200 years before” description gives broad context for the series, not a substitute calendar for its scenes.
