She reached No. 8 in the world in singles, made a Wimbledon semifinal, and won major doubles titles—while contemporary coverage increasingly focused on her looks and celebrity. A 2002 article reported hundreds of thousands of searches for her name, but it did not identify Google or verify that she was the world’s most-Googled woman.
What did Kournikova achieve on court?
Kournikova was not merely a celebrity who happened to play tennis. The WTA lists her singles career high as No. 8, reached in both 2000 and 2001. She reached the Wimbledon singles semifinals in 1997 and the Australian Open singles quarterfinals in 2001. Her year-end singles ranking was No. 8 in 2000 and No. 74 in 2001, a reminder that a career-high ranking and a year-end position describe different points in a player’s career. WTA statistics

Why did the “never won a title” shorthand take hold?
Kournikova did not win a WTA singles title, a fact that became a convenient shorthand for judging her career. But it obscures a major part of her record: she was an accomplished doubles player. The WTA lists a career-high doubles ranking of No. 1, 16 doubles titles, and a 200–71 doubles win-loss record. With Martina Hingis, she won the Australian Open doubles title in 1999 and 2002, and she claimed the year-end WTA Finals doubles title in 1999 and 2000. WTA career record
Those achievements do not erase the distinction between singles and doubles; they make it possible to describe her career accurately. She was a top-eight singles player who reached a Grand Slam semifinal, and a world No. 1 doubles player with major titles. The popular focus on her lack of a singles trophy left the second half of that account out.

What supports the claim that she was “the most Googled woman”?
A 2002 Play the Game conference magazine article reported 491,000 search-engine hits for “Anna Kournikova,” compared with 92,100 for “Lindsay Davenport.” It did not name the search engine, explain how the counts were gathered, or present an audited ranking. The figures therefore document striking search-era attention as reported at the time—not a Google measurement, a definitive global ranking, or a present-day popularity comparison. The same article described Kournikova as exceptionally photographed and mentioned that readers could buy her pin-up calendar. That is evidence of the way her image was commercialized in that period, not confirmation that the calendar is available now.

How did media coverage frame her fame?
Contemporary commentary explicitly questioned the gendered emphasis on Kournikova’s appearance. In the 2002 article, Alina Bernstein, identified as a sociologist and anthropologist based at Leicester University, said: “Anna Kournikova’s profile is built around her sexuality,” and, “It is her body and her looks that get her attention – not her performances.” These are Bernstein’s critical interpretation of her public profile, not a neutral finding about Kournikova’s own priorities or the entirety of her coverage. Her visibility extended beyond tennis reporting. ABC News reported in July 2001 that Kournikova and Hingis had appeared on the cover of GQ, placing the pair in a broader celebrity-media space. The article also discussed endorsement money in women’s tennis, but its cited $40 million Reebok deal was Venus Williams’s—not Kournikova’s. It should not be used as an estimate of Kournikova’s earnings or endorsements. ABC News, July 12, 2001

So why was she famous despite not winning a singles title?
Because the public story was larger than a singles trophy count. Kournikova had credible elite-level results, a Wimbledon semifinal, and exceptional doubles success. At the same time, contemporary accounts describe heavy photographic exposure, commercial attention to her image, and search interest on a scale that stood out in 2002. The available evidence supports the conclusion that she became a defining tennis celebrity of the search era; it does not establish the literal superlative that she was the world’s most-Googled woman.
